Note: Only two of 29 Cup races at Sonoma have been won from a starting position of 15th or worse and they came in back-to-back seasons with Juan Pablo Montoya (32nd) in 2007 and Kyle Busch (30th) in 2008. This is something to seriously consider when discussing possible wagers on skilled road drivers who practiced well but start a ways back. Lots of traffic with limited places to pass and more opportunities to be involved in someone else's mess. This should be factored in the odds to win and match-up prices considerably. Having said all that, I could be baited into taking more on Clint Bowyer (19th), Denny Hamlin (21st) and Kurt Busch (23rd) if the sports books jack the number up too high.

Final Talladega Driver Ratings: 2018 Geico 500

Jamie McMurray had a spectacular wreck Friday during final practice. He was fastest before wrecking. He is using a back-up car in Sunday's Geico 500.

FYI...Unlike most weeks, the final practice speeds in restrictor-plate races mean little to the overall final driver rating equation. This is still a major crap shoot, lottery, dart board or grab bag.

RACE 2: ATLANTA

Kevin Harvick gets the top rating not only because of dominating this race last season, leading the most laps (971) at Atlanta among active drivers or using a chassis that won at Texas in November. He also had a pretty good set of practices where he used his same bag of regular Atlanta tricks sticking to the yellow line near the apron. It works well for him. And with not much changes to the 2018 Cup cars and Harvick getting top-five finishes in four of the five 2017 playoff races on 1.5-mile tracks, he's got the most attractive resume for Atlanta.

Denny Hamlin got a boost in his rating after posting the best 10-consecutive lap average in both practices. His car is ready to roll just like it closed out 2017 with top-five finishes in six of his final seven starts on 1.5-mile tracks. Gibbs teammate Kyle Busch is almost as good and Daniel Suarez is also someone to keep an eye on.

Chase Elliott won't be as bad as he practiced or qualified and Ryan Newman won't be as good as he practiced or qualified -- just my opinion. Paul Menard in the No. 21 showed lots of speed and I'm expecting them to have a good run after having the third best 10-consecutive lap average during the second practice.

I also like a couple veterans to have a good showing Sunday -- or Monday since it's expected to rain. Clint Bowyer has something cooking similar to his teammate Harvick and Jimmie Johnson loves this old abrasive asphalt at Atlanta.

Final Richmond Driver Ratings: 2017 Federated Auto Parts 400

Native Virginian Denny Hamlin has won at Richmond three times, including last fall, and gets top rating this week.

Final Talladega Driver Ratings: 2017 Geico 500

Can a Chevrolet break through with a plate win?

Nothing gained from practice or wherever they start. The Fords have been on a roll in plate races the past three seasons and they come off a Daytona 500 win. I'm rooting for Junior and also for Joe Gibbs Racing to get their first win, but I'm expecting a Ford and the Stewart Haas Racing guys offer most value of all. Good luck and enjoy the race. It rarely dissatisfies.

Final Martinsville Betting Notes & Driver Ratings

Kyle Busch goes for season sweep.

Kyle Larson produced the fastest lap during Saturday’s final practice session at Martinsville Speedway in preparation for Sunday’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500.

Larson gained the top speed of 96.08 mph on his fourth of 61 laps turned on the half-mile paper clip layout, but what was more impressive was he had the best 10-consecutive lap average during long-run race simulations.
