Denny Hamlin Wins HighPoint.com 400 at Pocono Raceway

July 23, 2023

NASCAR Wire Service

Denny Hamlin prevailed in a tight door-to-door bump-and-go pass on Kyle Larson with seven laps remaining to claim a historic all-time best seventh NASCAR Cup Series victory at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway – the win in Sunday’s HighPoint.com 400 also marking Hamlin’s 50th career trophy and second of the 2023 season.

The race ended under caution for a last lap incident elsewhere on track, and the Pocono crowd voiced its displeasure, booing loudly as Hamlin’s No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota led the field to pit road at the 2.5-mile track after the checkered flag. Hamlin, 42, maintained the action was just close-quarter racing for a win. Larson, who finished 21st after the contact, disagreed and was none too happy with his good friend and golf partner.

“Both guys wrecked themselves,’’ Hamlin said of Larson and contact he had earlier with Larson’s teammate Alex Bowman. “There was a lane. He [Larson] missed the corner first and evidently didn’t have his right side tires clean and when he gassed up and got going again, you have an option in those positions to either hold it wide open and hit the fence or lift and race it out.

“Those were choices they made. I didn’t hit either one of them. Didn’t touch them.’’

“I love it, I love it,’’ Hamlin said, acknowledging the boos.

“I thought we had the best car and the strategy worked out. Just so happy we’re winning these races we should win.’’

Larson, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion, did not mince words after climbing out of his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Instead of a Top-5 finish – or possible victory – he recovered from the incident to cross the finish line 21st.

“First off, really proud of my team, they got us in position to race for the win,’’ said Larson, who did earn the Stage 2 win – his third of the year. “We got spun early [in the race] and the car was never really the same after that, but we played the strategy really well to get us up there. Just unfortunate.

“I’ve been cost a lot of good finishes by him throughout my career, and I know he says that I race a certain way, but I don’t think I’ve ever had to apologize to him about anything, not that I’m sure he’ll say ‘I’m sorry’ after this but it is what it is.

“Just move on and try to go to Richmond, where we won earlier this year.

“It is what it is. Yeah, we’re friends. Yes, this makes things awkward. But he’s always right. All the buddies know, Denny’s always right. It is what it is. I’m not gonna let it tarnish our friendship off track. But I am pissed, and I feel like I should be pissed.

“I think at this point I have the right,’’ Larson said of potentially racing Hamlin differently on track going forward. “Like I’ve said, I’ve never had to apologize to him about anything I’ve done on the racetrack. I can count four or five times where he’s had to reach out to me and say, ‘sorry I’ve put you in a bad spot there.’ So eventually, like he says, you have to start racing people a certain way to get the respect back.’’

Hamlin earned Toyota its 600th career win in the three NASCAR national series combined and led his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Martin Truex Jr. across the finish line. Tyler Reddick, who drives for the 23XI Racing Toyota team that Hamlin is part-owner of, finished third. Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick and the remaining two JGR cars of rookie Ty Gibbs and Christopher Bell rounded out the Top-6.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Harrison Burton and Hendrick’s Chase Elliott rounded out the top-10. It marked the second top-10 of the season for the 22-year old Burton. And the effort from Elliott leaves him 59-points out of the 16-driver Playoff pool with five more regular season races remaining for the 2020 series champion to race for another trophy, after missing six races in 2023.

Elliott’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate, the race polesitter William Byron, led the most laps (60) of the day, but finished 24th. He now trails Truex by 30 points for the regular season title.

Varying pit strategies – and in particular on the final green flag run – changed the leaderboard in the last 30-40 laps of the race. Some drivers that hadn’t run top-5 all day postponed their last stop hoping for a caution flag. However, the day’s strongest cars were in position to settle the trophy; some – such as Larson and Hamlin – on a two-tire pit stop and some – such as Truex and Byron – with four fresh tires.

There were 11 cautions on the day and incidents on three consecutive restarts after the Stage 1 break impacted the Playoff situations of multiple drivers.

The first re-start following the Stage break not only involved the Stage 1 winner Joey Logano, but also collected Trackhouse Racing’s Daniel Suarez who went into the race a mere 1-point behind Michael McDowell for that 16th and final Playoff position. McDowell’s car suffered some damage too, but he was able to drive on. Logano’s No. 22 Penske Racing Ford was towed back and repaired but Suarez’s No. 99 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet pit needing extensive work and ultimately drove back to the garage.

With five races remaining, Suarez dropped to 18th in the championship standings and his deficit to 16th place McDowell now stands at 23 points..

“At the end of the day it’s our fault we shouldn’t be back there with those guys, squirrels,’’ a frustrated Suarez said, adding, “It was a racing incident, but we shouldn’t be racing those guys. We can only control what we can control.”

The summer run to the Playoffs continues next week with the Cook Out 400 next Sunday afternoon at Richmond (Va.) Raceway (3 p.m. ET, USA Network, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Kevin Harvick is the defending race winner. Kyle Larson won at Richmond this Spring.

Micah Roberts' Top-10 Finish Prediction: 2023 HighPoint.com 400 at Pocono Raceway

Read my full article on Sportsline.com

1 #11 Denny Hamlin (5/1) - He started his career winning both Pocono races in 2006 as a rookie. It was his only wins of the season but it didn’t come as a surprise because of his skills on the flat tracks. I can remember it like yesterday. The Heat won the NBA Championship and Italy won the World Cup and in NASCAR Hamlin won both races at Pocono. He’s won a total of six times at Pocono tied with Jeff Gordon for most in track history, He had the seventh win last season, got the trophy, took it home, and then a post-race inspection was big enough to penalize both him and runner-up Kyle Busch. The same car is being used and Pocono is his house.

“I’m looking forward to this weekend,” Hamlin said. “We definitely have some unfinished business at Pocono after last year. Hopefully, we’re able to unload strong on Saturday and carry that through the weekend. It would mean a lot to be able to get some redemption and to get that seventh win at Pocono to break the tie with Jeff (Gordon).”

2 #45 Tyler Reddick (12/1) - He’s never led a lap at Pocono but he has finished 11th or better in his last three starts there. Last season was his best with a runner-up. He’s got the Toyota this season and I think he’ll have a good run this week because he’s got road course skills. He enters and exits the turns fast. It’s called the road course that drives like a superspeedway. It’s the tricky triangle with three differing turns, getting flatter with each turn. I think it’s ideal for him to start his own tradition at Pocono.

3 #20 Christopher Bell (11/1) - I’m going to have a small bet on him despite a rough couple of weeks out of him. It’s not because of his 2017 Truck Series win at Pocono or finishing fourth in two of his five Cup starts, but it’s more about having JGR equipment. They had the two best cars at Pocono last season, but they didn’t get credit for the wins.

“After a rough couple of weeks we need to get back on track,” Bell said. “I’m looking forward to getting some extra laps in the truck before the cup event, I’ve always been a believer in racing as much as you can.”

4 #5 Kyle Larson (7/1) - No wins in 15 starts, but he does have five top-fives and an 11th-place average finish. He’s been good enough to win here at least four times. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him step up here.

"The No. 5 HendrickCars.com team almost got a win there (at Pocono Raceway) in 2021 and we got a top-five finish there last year,” Larson said. “Hopefully, we can get a win there this year.”

5 #19 Martin Truex Jr. (6/1) - He has a 14th-place average finish among his 33 starts at Pocono which includes two wins, the last coming in 2018. He’s had one top-five in his last eight starts there. But he’s won on all of his home tracks this season – Dover and New Hampshire – and this would finish off his trilogy.

“Really looking forward to going to Pocono this weekend in our Interstate Batteries car. It’s one of our home tracks, as they say. I’ve won there a couple of times and kind of struggled there last year. But really excited to get back with the fast racecars James (Small, crew chief) and all the 19 guys have been bringing to the track lately. The team is doing a great job, and we’re fired up and hope we can get another win at Pocono, but this time with Interstate Batteries on board with us.”

6 #9 Chase Elliott (12/1) - He’s 60 points out of making the playoffs but he’s running out of time. He needs to win. He’s been fourth three times at Pocono, but his biggest moment came last season when he won the race by default. He won the race and didn’t lead a single lap. Put that question in a trivia question for cash. He didn't even get the trophy until later in the week. He was sitting in third when the No. 1 and No. 2 finishers both got penalized. Some sportsbooks didn’t follow house rules and paid out Hamlin as the winner and then also had to pay out Elliott. I like desperate drivers, but I can’t get over that Elliott hasn’t led a lap in his last six starts at Pocono.

7 #24 William Byron (9/1) - This has been a great track for him with a 9.4 average finish in nine Cup starts, the best among active drivers. His worst finish was 18th as a rookie. His best was in 2021 when he was third. He led laps in the double-header event in both races. He likes the track. It looks like it was built for him.

“We’ve always had fast cars there (Pocono) not only as a team but as an organization as well,” Byron said. “Rudy (Fugle) and I have a win there in trucks and we came close in 2021 to getting two wins in the doubleheader weekend. Heading to a track that we’ve been traditionally really good at helps to bring that momentum back for everyone after a tough weekend. I’m just excited to get on track and put New Hampshire behind us."

8 #8 Kyle Busch (6/1) - He has a 15th-place average finish in 35 starts and this will be his first driving for RCR, but the good news is that Reddick who drove the car last season was runner-up. Busch has four wins and 11 top-fives and he missed another top-five last season when the post-race inspection placed him last. He led a race-high 63 laps before getting penalized.

9 #99 Daniel Suarez (30/1)
- In the NextGen car last season, the one that is relatively the same this season, he finished third and was running in the top-6 most of the race. He was a contender. He’ll be a contender this week as well and the generous price at Caesars makes it worth throwing a few bucks on him to win. His best finish was runner-up in 2018.

10 #1 Ross Chastain (10/1) - His best Pocono finish was 24th in 2019, but he has a win in the Truck Series there. Last season he had his best Cup run, but his driving style caught him in a pickle. Poke the bear (Hamlin) too much, the bear wakes up and bites. He was on his best Pocono run leading the second stage and leading 16 laps when he got in a side-by-side situation on a restart with Hamlin and Chastain didn’t let up and crashed the wall because Hamlin didn’t give him any room. It was a successful payback. He’ll be good here this week, but his price is too short to give him a shot.

Notes of Interest

● Outrageously Dependable: Interstate Batteries – one of the most tenured team sponsors in NASCAR history – began its 32nd season as the founding sponsor of Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) with an expanded presence that features the brand’s iconic green livery across all four of JGR’s NASCAR Cup Series entries. So far this season, Interstate has adorned the No. 20 of Christopher Bell three times, and the No. 54 of Ty Gibbs four times. Interstate rode along with Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota at Circuit of Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas and this weekend will be Truex’s one and only start in the green machine this season.

● Truex and the No. 19 team for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) set the tone for the season right out of the gate by winning the 150-lap feature in the non-points Clash at the Coliseum on Feb. 5 in Los Angeles. Truex won his heat race, then went on to lead the final 25 laps of the feature en route to a victory that gave him and the team much-needed momentum heading into the 2023 season. While the team was knocking on the door over the first 10 points-paying races, the breakthrough win finally came at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway on May 1, and Truex has added two more points-paying victories – June 11 at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway and this past Monday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon – to give him four overall wins this season.

● 34 and Counting: Truex’s win at New Hampshire was the 34th of his Cup Series career, putting him in a tie with 2004 Cup Series champion Kurt Busch for 25th on the all-time win list in NASCAR’s top series.

● Truex has two wins, six top-five finishes and 14 top-10s and has led a total of 237 laps in 33 career NASCAR Cup Series starts at Pocono. Truex’s average Pocono finish is 14.5.

● Truex notched his second and most recent Pocono win in June 2014 when he led 31 laps along the way. The New Jersey Native’s first win at Pocono came in June 2015, when he led a race-high 97 laps on his way to his maiden win at the “Tricky Triangle.”

● In addition to his three wins through 21 points-paying races this season, Truex has seven top-five finishes and 10-top10s and has led 743 laps. To put the laps-led number in perspective, he led 572 laps over the entire 36-race points-paying season in 2022.

● With his race-high 254 laps led in his New Hampshire win on Monday, Truex eclipsed 12,000 laps led in his Cup Series career and now sits 17th on the all-time laps led list in NASCAR’s top series.

● Toyota Milestone: With Truex’s victory Monday at New Hampshire, Toyota now sits at 599 NASCAR national series victories (176 Cup, 196 Xfinity, 227 Trucks) with an eye on reaching the 600-win milestone this weekend at Pocono.

● Helpful Tips: An avid fisherman, Truex uses the marine battery line from Interstate in all his boats. Fans are advised to do the following before they head out on the water:

  • Make sure the battery has a charge by testing it before going out on the water.
  • Clean off any corrosion around battery terminals and ensure a proper connection.
  • Check the battery box seal and terminal boots. If a replacement deep cycle or cranking battery is needed, choose what the pros use and get an Interstate.

● Ahead at this Stage: With his two stage wins Monday at New Hampshire, Truex now has 59 NASCAR Cup Series stage wins since the beginning of the stage era in 2017, tops in the series. He is the only driver with 10 or more stage sweeps, as well, after sweeping both stages at New Hampshire and adding more valuable playoff points he will carry into and through the postseason. Truex also happens to lead the series all-time in stage points with 1,943.

● Monday’s victory at New Hampshire vaulted Truex back into the lead in the Cup Series driver standings. He has 667 points, 17 ahead of second-place William Byron. The regular-season champion will receive 15 important playoff points when the playoffs begin on Labor Day weekend in September. Between his stage points and playoff points for his three points-paying victories, Truex now has earned 18 important playoff points with six races remaining in the regular season.

Martin Truex Jr., Driver of the No. 19 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry TRD

Are you looking forward to Pocono after having a strong run there last year, even though it didn’t work out in the end?

“Really looking forward to going to Pocono this weekend in our Interstate Batteries car. It’s one of our home tracks, as they say. I’ve won there a couple of times and kind of struggled there last year. But really excited to get back with the fast racecars James (Small, crew chief) and all the 19 guys have been bringing to the track lately. The team is doing a great job, and we’re fired up and hope we can get another win at Pocono, but this time with Interstate Batteries on board with us.”

With Interstate Batteries being a founding partner of JGR dating back to its inception in 1992, what does it mean to have Interstate on your car at Pocono this weekend, knowing what the company has meant to JGR all these years?

“It means a lot to be able to drive the Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry TRD. I’ve been watching Interstate cars go around the racetrack about my whole life. Since JGR started, I’ve been watching NASCAR, and Interstate has been an iconic paint scheme in the series, so it was an honor to drive for them last year for the first time, and we get to do it again this weekend at Pocono. I’ve been working with them the last couple of years on appearances and other things. A lot of great people and hard-working people who have treated me well, we almost got them a win at New Hampshire last year so it would be great to get those guys to victory lane at a place I’ve already won at a couple of times.”

With three wins so far this year, why do you think you and James have really clicked here in 2023?

“Just experience with this racecar, really. I think James and I have always had a great relationship, have always gelled and worked really well together, understand each other. Last year was just one of those years where we had a lot working against us. But we learned a lot, and now we’ve got better racecars. We have a better understanding of them, and that consistency that we’ve shown and the ability to lead laps and win races is proof of that. We never changed a thing with our team, our people, our process, the way we did things. We just have better cars, better understanding of our cars, and showing up to the racetrack ready to roll with a lot of speed this year, and we hope we can continue that this weekend at Pocono.”

Do you feel like there’s a separation now in terms of the championship favorites, and do you feel like you’re the favorite?

“It doesn’t matter what I think. We’ve got to execute. We’ve got to go win races. We’ve got to get points. I was thinking this week when I saw the points pop up the other day, and I was like, ‘All right, if we have a perfect weekend, we’ll be like one bonus point behind (William) Byron – wait, no, not quite, but close.’ But the regular-season championship is a big deal – 15 points for that. If we can keep knocking off bonus points, that’s going to be very, very important come playoff time. Just keep digging and keep doing what we’re doing. The two weeks before New Hampshire were tough with terrible finishes but really good racecars and really good runs. So we’re doing what we need to do, and just got to keep doing that and trying to keep gaining points.”
