DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Kevin Harvick may be leaving Richard Childress Racing after this season, but he intends to go out a winner.
And he doesn’t want to hear how being a so-called lame-duck driver will cause his team to fall apart and struggle.
Harvick, who is headed to Stewart-Haas Racing next year, proved his point by dominating the exhibition Sprint Unlimited Saturday night to kick off the 2013 season.
Harvick led 40 of 75 laps in the preseason exhibition race, dominating the second and third segments to win the shootout for the third time.
Harvick, the 2007 Daytona 500 winner, has not publicly confirmed that he is leaving the team after this year — team owner Richard Childress has — but he isn’t worried about any fallout from his pending move. He took the first step toward a strong final season with RCR by winning the first race with NASCAR’s new Gen-6 car.
“I don’t think it’s been that big of a deal,” he said. “(Matt) Kenseth did a great job with his situation (moving to Joe Gibbs Racing this year) and for us … our guys, they don’t care. They just want to win.”
