Kyle Busch is 10/1 to win 2021 Folds of Honor 500 at Atlanta

KYLE BUSCH

Sending a Message

HUNTERSVILLE, North Carolina (March 16, 2021) – As the NASCAR Cup Series heads to the sixth race of the season at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Kyle Busch is hoping to “send a message” in more ways than one.

Busch, driver of the No. 18 M&M’S Messages Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), will have M&M’S Messages on board for Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta. First launched in 2020, each M&M’S Messages pack features a unique expression delivered by the iconic M&M’S spokescandies to help people connect and find humor in everyday life.

This year, Kyle Busch’s No.18 M&M’S Messages Toyota features two very appropriate phrases. “Thanks for Being as Awesome as I Am” will debut at Atlanta this weekend while another appropriate phrase, “I’m Not Competitive, I Just Hate Losing,” will adorn the car next weekend at the Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway dirt race.

M&M’S Messages packs are featured in the beloved fan-favorite flavors – Milk Chocolate, Peanut, Peanut Butter and Caramel. Fans can find M&M’S Messages on shelves at retailers nationwide for a limited time, or they can order their favorite M&M’S Messages packaging design by visiting mms.com.

There’s another way Busch is hoping to send a message this weekend, and that would be by bringing home his third win at the 1.5-mile oval. His first win there might have been his most memorable. It was just his fourth start for JGR, Mars Wrigley, and Toyota, and Busch brought home the victory, which was the first of many for the driver-sponsor combo. Since then, Busch has amassed 53 total wins and two Cup Series championships, including another victory at Atlanta in 2013. A win Sunday in the M&M’S Messages Toyota would certainly send a message that the No. 18 team will be a championship contender yet again.

To further support the M&M’S Messages scheme, fans can tweet their favorite expression from one of 28 different M&M’S Messages packs available using the hashtag #MMSSweepstakes. The promotion, which opened this week and will close Sunday, March 28 at 9 a.m. EDT, aims to bring better moments and more smiles to the faces of M&M’S Racing and Kyle Busch fans across the country. As part of the promotion, select fans will be randomly chosen to win signed M&M’S Racing hats and diecasts, in addition to the grand prize – a signed piece of Busch’s No.18 M&M’S Toyota Camry.

So, as the Cup Series heads back to Atlanta this weekend, Busch and the M&M’S Messages team look to take lessons from their 2008 and 2013 race wins on the lightning-fast oval and bring home his third Cup Series win at the track and 58th of his career. Busch would like nothing more than to send a winning message and bring home his first win of the 2021 season.

KYLE BUSCH, Driver of the No. 18 M&M'S Messages Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing:

What are your expectations going to Atlanta?

“Atlanta is one of those places where anything can happen and we’ll definitely have to be on our toes there this weekend with our M&M’S Messages Camry. You have to have good grip there, you have to have good (tire) fall-off – you have to be fast to start a run, yet you don’t want to fall off more than anybody else. So you have to take care of your stuff and bide your time a little bit. That lends itself to options by the driver to either push hard early (in the run) or save a little and be there late.”

With the way the racing is on the 1.5-mile and 2-mile ovals, are you doing anything differently with the aero on those types of tracks?

“It’s the same for everybody. You’re trying to shut off the guy behind you. You’re trying to shut his air off. That’s why the blocking is so bad, even at some of these places. The guys out front, they’ll mirror drive wherever the heck you’re going to make sure they shut your air off so you have to get out of the gas and stay out of the gas and lose momentum, and they can get a gap on you so they don’t have to deal with you again. As soon as you sort of lose that lead draft, if you’re not fast enough to catch back up to that guy in front of you, then you just continually seem to lose ground.”

How has the challenge of getting to know and working with a new crew chief going in terms of communication?

“I think it’s been good. It’s going to take a little bit of time. I would think that as we probably go a few more races, we would just have to look at our setup, how we start, how we end some of these races, then what tracks we’re going to that mimic this. We go to Kansas, for example – I would take this setup right there, look at the two Vegas and Kansas setups from last year, look at this Vegas setup, and see how we want to build our Kansas setup. Maybe we can take some things from Homestead, where we can apply them to Atlanta. Try to come up with a way of being able to do it, forget about the simulator. That’s where it gets complicated and challenging. We’re trying to utilize and make that tool better so we can really go out there and look like heroes.”

What are your memories of racing at Atlanta?

“I’ve won a few Truck Series races there. That was fun. I won for the first time in an Xfinity race there a few years ago, so that was very cool. I finished second three or four times, so it had been an Achilles heel for me, I guess. The Cup races there, I’ve either been really good or really bad, it seems. There have been times where I’ve been really good throughout the event. I don’t know what it is, but I just can’t seem to keep the grip in my car for the long haul, as long as you need to throughout a run.”

Kevin Harvick continues Atlanta Motor Speedway dominance

Kevin Harvick was the 5/1 favorite to win Sunday.
June 6, 2020

NASCAR Wire Service

Kevin Harvick has had an exceptional relationship with Atlanta Motor Speedway and the 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion showed that again Sunday afternoon winning the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500, his third victory at the historic track.

Harvick led a race high 151 of 325 laps en route to his 51st career win, prevailing in a valiant contest with Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr., who finished second and third.

Truex led 62 laps, won the opening two stages of the race and kept Harvick’s No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford honest. Harvick passed both JGR Toyotas to open the third stage of the race and held them at bay to win by a healthy 3.527-seconds. Busch passed Truex for second with five laps to go.

It was Harvick’s second victory of the season (he also won at Darlington Raceway in NASCAR’s first race back since the sport was sidelined during the COVID-19 pandemic) and it is the 44-year old Californian’s ninth top-10 finish in 10 races this year. With it, Harvick extends his NASCAR Cup Series championship lead to 48 points over Penske Racing’s Joey Logano.

Logano’s teammate Ryan Blaney and JGR driver Denny Hamlin rounded out the Top-5 at Atlanta followed by Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott and Penske Racing teammates Brad Keselowski and Logano. For Kurt Busch, the Top-10 was an especially impressive effort considering he started last in the field because of inspection violations.

Clint Bowyer led 58 laps only to have to pit late in the race and fall out of a Top-10 finish.  He ended up 20th.

Harvick’s Ford was considered the car to beat at Atlanta even before the retiring seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Johnson gave the command to start engines Sunday afternoon.

Harvick earned an emotional career first NASCAR Cup Series win at Atlanta back in 2001, three weeks after taking over driving duties for the late seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt, who was killed in the Daytona 500 season-opener. Harvick held up three fingers in a reverse victory lap Sunday in honor of Earnhardt and the champ’s famed No. 3 car.

"First [career] win came for me here at Atlanta and this is just a race track that I’ve taken a liking to,’’ Harvick said. "You always have those memories and now you want to celebrate everything that Dale Earnhardt did for this sport. To come here and be able to do that with wins and go to victory lane is pretty special.

"We had a great pit stop, got to restart on the bottom and got my car to take off and I was able to get track position. Once I could get through those first 10 laps and my car was freed up enough I could get in a rhythm and really hit my marks, then with about 25 laps I could just drive away.’’

Harvick has certainly been the driver of record as of late. He answered that first win 17 years later (in 2018) and is currently in the midst of an amazing nine-year run at the track. He’s now led at least 100 laps in seven of the last nine races – more than 10,000 laps out front since joining the Stewart-Haas Racing team in 2014. And he’s earned Top-10 finishes in nine of the last 11 races.

Truex Jr.’s two stages wins were the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion’s first of the season. And for much of the race, he was there ready to interrupt Harvick’s longtime dominance at the track. That opportunity never came.

It would have been the first win of the season for Truex, who has been so-close at Atlanta  -finishing second in 2019 and scoring Top-10 finishes in the last six races.

Tyler Reddick, driver of the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, was the top finishing Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate – with a 16th-place finish.

Prior to the race NASCAR President Steve Phelps addressed the race field and the nation pledging that the sport is absolutely sensitive to the country’s current social unrest and committed to improving race relations.

"Our country is in pain and our people are justifiably angry, demanding to be heard,’’ Phelps said. "Our sport must do better. Our country must do better.’’

The NASCAR Cup Series races next in the Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

“Obviously, first win came for me here at Atlanta and this is just a race track that I’ve taken a liking to, and you always come back and have those memories and now you want to celebrate everything that Dale Earnhardt did for this sport.  To come here and be able to do that with wins and go to victory lane is pretty special, so I just have to thank everybody from Busch Light.  We’ve got corn all over our car this week, so Busch Light for the farmer’s campaign.  Go buy those corn cans so we can donate $100,000. We struggled most of the day with our car and he (crew chief Rodney Childers) definitely earned his birthday present today.  It’s one of my favorite tracks for sure and I love to win here. I was able to get track position and then once I could get through those first 10 laps and my car was freed up enough to where I could get in a rhythm and really start hitting my marks, and then by about lap 25 I could start driving away.  I’m just proud of everybody from Busch Light and Ford, Stewart-Haas Racing.  Thank you guys for everything.  Hunt Brothers Pizza, Fields, Mobil 1, Jimmy John’s.  I know I’m gonna forget somebody. Haas, everybody who helps us on this car and you the fans. We appreciate everything you guys do for us.”

NASCAR Atlanta Betting Preview: 2020 Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500

Kevin Harvick has led a bunch of Atlanta laps the last few years.

Handicapping NASCAR at Atlanta
Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway will be the 10th race of the scrambled 2020 season and also be the seventh race using the race package featuring engines with 550 horsepower meaning we have lots of relevant data to sort through before betting.

The first six races with this package have been won by six different drivers showing parity to be alive and well offering some entertaining races with lots of different lap leaders.

The Atlanta race was originally scheduled to be the fifth race of the season on March 15 and became the first casualty of the season for NASCAR due to the global coronavirus pandemic, which has been forgotten by all in the media due to the recent riots being the top daily story.

But NASCAR has been part of the recovery process for fans being cooped up at home with no sports on TV as many of the other sports haggle about money. NASCAR was the first live sport back on network TV on May 17 after having a string of eNASCAR events that a few Las Vegas sportsbooks posted odds on and the TV ratings were good.

It seems like so long ago because NASCAR is playing catch-up with the schedule to get all 36 races completed on the season. They’ve given us five traces to handicap since May 17, which includes two midweek races at Darlington and Charlotte. I know I keep saying it, but NASCAR backed into a winner with the weekday night races, something I hope they continue to do in seasons to come. I have the feeling the drivers like it as well.

“I think the procedures and everything has been really smooth, really easy,” Kyle Busch said. “I compliment and applaud NASCAR as much as possible just on their efforts and the things that they’ve done in order to go through and get us to this point to have us an opportunity to go out here and put on a show for the fans on television. Obviously, we miss having the fans at the racetrack, but it’s a great effort by everybody involved to get us to this point. It’s been way smoother than I thought it was going to be and I hope that it continues to be as smooth and seamless as possible for everybody, and we can get through a couple months of just getting back with our feet going and getting the show going. And then maybe we can get back to a little more normalcy here in, I don’t know, say a couple months.”

Another New Winner?
Of the five races run since coming back from the shutdown, four of them have been run with this week’s race package between Darlington and Charlotte. Atlanta is Charlotte’s sister-track and they’re almost identical 1.5-mile high-banked layouts with the main difference being the worn abrasive surface at Atlanta which takes a special kind of driver to win.

Brad Keselowski won the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte and then Chase Elliott won the shorter Alsco 500K last Thursday at Charlotte. Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin each won at Darlington and if we go to the races before the shutdown we have Joey Logano winning at Las Vegas thanks to late pit strategy and Alex Bowman dominating at Fontana. Six races, six different winners.

Who might be the top contenders to be the seventh different driver to win this season?

Ryan Blaney first comes to mind because he’s been solid with this package, but the best value might be Erik Jones who is offered at 32-to-1 odds to win Circa Sports in Las Vegas. He had a career-best seventh-place at Atlanta last season and has a 10.6 average finish in three Cup starts. For a young driver, he’s proved to be one of the best at saving tires on abrasive surfaces.

After that, maybe it’s Martin Truex Jr. who led the series with seven wins last season but has yet to have a top-five in nine races so far. And what’s up with Kyle Busch having no wins? He’s a two-time winner at Atlanta. He hasn’t led a lot of laps this season but he does have five top-five finishes which are tied for the most with Kevin Harvick.
