LAS VEGAS -- The story of the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup season so far is easily Dale Earnhardt Jr., as he has the look of a champion. Las Vegas sports books, however, aren't overreacting to his win at the Daytona 500 and second-place finishes at both Phoenix and Las Vegas.
With 32 races remaining before the championship at Homestead, Jimmie Johnson still remains the heavy favorite, at 5-to-2 odds at the LVH SuperBook, to win the 2014 Sprint Cup. Sunday's winner in Vegas, Brad Keselowski, is 7-to-1, followed by a log jam of four drivers at 8-to-1 – Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Kevin Harvick and Earnhardt Jr.
One big question is whether there is value with Junior at 8-to-1. There is rarely value with Junior – his popularity at the bet window forces books to limit their risk by assigning him lower odds.
Let's face it, even with his Daytona 500 win, that's only three wins in the past seven seasons. But we've also never seen Junior look this good to start a season. In fact, only six drivers in NASCAR history have started a season with three top-two finishes, and three of those went on to win the title – Johnson in 2006 was the last.
