Jimmie Johnson is the 7 to 2 favorite for next weeks Brickyard 400 according to odds released Monday at the Las Vegas Hilton Super Book. Johnson is a three-time winner at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, however, those three wins remain his only top-five finishes at the track during his eight starts. Just as common as his kissing the Bricks have become has been his penchant for finishing poorly, such as finishing 36th or worse on three occasions.
Following Johnson at the top of the odds list are three drivers listed at the second slot with Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, and Denny Hamlin all at 8 to 1. Everyone else is listed at 10 to 1 odds or higher giving great value on several contenders to win one of NASCAR’s most cherished prize.
Gordon is a four-time winner at Indy, a track that he dreamed as a youngster growing up that he could some day win at, but doing so in Indy cars. Gordon won the inaugural NASCAR race at Indy in 1994, a race that helped catapult him and stock car racing into mainstream America the way we know it today.
Hamlin’s value at Indy lies simply with his knack for getting around flat tracks of all kinds. If there is one track on the circuit that could be deemed similar to Indy, it would be Pocono and no one has dominated Pocono like Hamlin. His best finish at Indy was third-place in 2008.
Last years hard luck story went to Juan Pablo Montoya who seemed to have the race in the bag before being penalized late for a speeding infraction on pit road. Montoya is a former Indy 500 winner and his odds are 10 to 1 along with two-time Brickyard 400 winner and Indiana native Tony Stewart. Montoya finished 11th last year despite the penalty and has a career best runner-up finish which he accomplished during his rookie season of 2007.
