TALLADEGA, Ala. -- A perfect race capped an imperfect week for Kevin Harvick and Richard Childress Racing.
The No. 29 team lost its sponsor, Shell/Pennzoil, on Wednesday. Rumors of discord between Harvick and his owner, Childress, resurfaced as well.
Then on Sunday, with future uncertainty shrouding the team, Harvick tucked himself behind Jamie McMurray on the Aaron's 499's third attempt at a Green-White-Checkered restart. He waited for McMurray's move, then dove the opposite way, slingshotted around the defending Daytona 500 champion and stole a win.
"It worked out perfect," Harvick said. "You couldn't have scripted it any better."
Harvick won the Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway, breaking a 115-race winless streak dating back to the 2007 Daytona 500. McMurray finished second, Juan Pablo Montoya finished third and Denny Hamlin and Mark Martin rounded out the top five.
"I think it's great karma with everything that has happened this week with the sponsor and everything," Harvick said. "I think in all it was good for our team
but the karma thing is the best part."
