Denny Hamlin wins first career road race at Watkins Glen

Denny Hamlin was as high as 40-to-1 to win Sunday at Watkins Glen.
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- Here's what you need to know from Sunday's Cheez-It 355 at Watkins Glen International, the final Sprint Cup race on a road course this season:

WINNER: Denny Hamlin won his first race since he took the season opening Daytona 500, holding offMartin Truex Jr. and Brad Keselowski after a final restart with four laps left. Hamlin notched a mistake-free final lap, after missing the final turn at Sonoma Raceway in June and allowing Tony Stewart to win there. It is the first road course win of his career.

Hamlin led Joey Logano, Truex, Kyle Larson and Keselowski on the restart. Truex moved up to second after passing Logano, but Keselowski appeared to tag his bumper coming out of the final turn. Hamlin climbed gingerly from his No. 11 Toyota after doing an extensive burnout, and said in victory lane he woke up with back spasms. The driver broke his back in a March 2013 crash with Logano, but had suffered from back issues before that injury.

"Really doubted being in the race car today," Hamlin said. "I finally have won at all the racetracks."

He called the final restarts ''hectic'' and said he didn't want to give other drivers such as Truex and Keselowski a chance in the closing laps like he did Stewart at Sonoma.

Hamlin now has won at superspeedways, intermediate and short tracks, and road courses. Along with his Daytona 500 victory, he also has won the Southern 500 and an All-Star race.
