Dover Betting Preview: 2017 AAA 400 Drive for Autism

Is this the week a Joe Gibbs Racing driver finally wins in 2017?
LAS VEGAS -- This week we get the first race of the season in the northeastern part of the country with the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway's 1-mile high-banked concrete layout known as the Monster Mile. It's a fast track track with lots of room and multiple grooves, but it's still kind of a short track so drivers get in the way of each other and keep things interesting. All drivers respect the Monster.

“It’s called the Monster Mile for a reason – the track can chew up cars and spit them out," said 2011 Dover winner Kurt Busch. "It’s because of those tough transitions into the corners with the high banking and even the high-banked straightaways. It’s tough to do that sharp of a turn on a mile racetrack. It’s like you literally jump down into the corner and then jump back up out of the corner onto the straightaway, and so those points of the track are the toughest part – the transition from straightaway to corner. It’s a fun track to drive.”

There's no other track like the Monster Mile on the circuit, but the best comparison would probably be Bristol's half-mile concrete track. Because of the steep banking and concrete, crew chiefs that do well at Bristol usually brings the same car and set-up the Dover. So before you make your wagers this week, take a look at what happened in April at Bristol.

Jimmie Johnson won that race, taking the the lead from Kevin Harvick with 21 laps to go. Kyle Larson led the most laps (202) and finished sixth while Martin Truex Jr. led the second-most laps (116) and finished eighth. Clint Bowyer would finish second and Matt Kenseth would finish fourth.

Kenseth might be someone to keep an eye on this week and seek out high odds before practice begins. He hasn't won a race all season, nor has any of his Joe Gibbs teammates, but this is a place he likes very much and you have the Bristol thing going for you as well. You should be able to get 15-to-1 or higher on him. He's a three-time winner at Dover, including winning this race last year. He's been seventh or better in six of his last seven starts there and has a 12.8 average finish in 36 starts.

Jimmie Johnson the best ever at Dover with 10 wins

Johnson is 9/2 favorite to win at Dover; his Bristol win correlates well.
Jimmie Johnson on why he enjoys racing at Dover
"Dover is my favorite track on the circuit. I get asked all the time why, and it really just suits my driving style and off-road racing background. It’s been a while since we’ve put the Lowe’s Chevy in Victory Lane there so it would be nice to make it win number 11 this weekend."

Jimmie Johnson will be available to members of the media on Friday, June 2, at 9:00 a.m. local time in the media center at Dover International Speedway.

ONE THAT GOT AWAY: Jimmie Johnson and the No. 48 Lowe’s team had a strong showing last weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. They finished fourth and second in the first two 100-lap stages, respectively, and just outside the top-10 in the third stage. In the final stage, Johnson took the lead with 33 laps to go as he and crew chief Chad Knaus decided to utilize fuel strategy. Johnson saved as much fuel as he could, however the team ran out of gas with two laps to go on Lap 398. Johnson pitted for a few seconds of fuel and recovered to finish 17th.

LOOKING BACK: Johnson won at Dover for the first time on June 2, 2002, in just his 16th start as a NASCAR Cup Series driver. He followed that up the same year by winning the fall event to sweep the season. Click here to see photos from Johnson’s first win at the "Monster Mile."

SO MANY TROPHIES: Johnson’s most recent win at the one-mile concrete oval was in May 2015. He has a total of 10 NASCAR Cup Series wins at Dover, which ranks first all-time ahead of NASCAR Hall of Famers Bobby Allison and Richard Petty, who recorded seven wins apiece.

DRIVER RATING: According to NASCAR’s loop data, Johnson has the series-best driver rating at Dover with a score of 118.3. The driver rating is a formula that combines wins, top-15 finishes, average running position while on the lead lap, average speed under green, fastest lap, most laps led and lead-lap finishes. The maximum a driver can earn in each race is 150 points. He has spent 85.5 percent of all laps run inside the top 15 and has an average finish of 8.2.

OUT FRONT: Johnson has led 3,093 laps around Dover International Speedway throughout his career -- the most all-time of any driver at the track. The amount of laps led is almost double the amount of any other current full-time driver. Johnson led 90 laps during the most recent race at Dover in October 2016 en route to a seventh-place finish. Out of 30 starts, Johnson has an impressive 21 top-10 finishes.

Clint Bowyer's runner-up at Bristol correlates well to Dover

Clint Bowyer is 30/1 to win Sunday at Dover.
CLINT BOWYER, Driver of the No. 14 Haas Automation Ford Fusion for Stewart-Haas Racing:

What are your thoughts on Dover Speedway?
“Dover is always a cool track that I think every driver looks forward to because it’s a driver’s track. You’ve got to man up, get on top of that wheel and make things happen. There’s just so many things going on there on that concrete surface and high banks. It’s a lot of fun. If you win there, you’ve earned it.” -

Notes of Interest:
 Sunday’s race will mark Clint Bowyer’s 410th career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start and 23rd career Cup Series start at Dover (Del.) International Speedway, where he has two top-five finishes and 12 top-10s and has led 42 laps.

 Bowyer owns career totals of eight wins, two poles, 60 top-five finishes, 172 top-10s and 2,351 laps led in 409 NASCAR Cup Series races. He also owns eight Xfinity Series victories. He is ninth in the Cup Series standings after 12 races.

 His most recent Cup Series victory came at Charlotte (Oct. 13, 2012).

 His most recent Cup Series pole came at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon (Sept. 16, 2007).

Kyle Busch on run of three straight top-five finishes

Kyle Busch is 6/1 to win at Dover.
KYLE BUSCH, Driver of the No. 18 PEDIGREE® Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing:

What are the team’s goals this weekend at Dover?
“We just need keep executing as a team like we’ve been doing pretty much every week. Dover has been a good place for me. We ran really well there in the fall and had a strong second-place run there. I know Adam (Stevens, crew chief) and all the PEDIGREE® guys are working hard to have a good car off the truck and get us off to a strong start this weekend and, hopefully, we can finish off a strong run there this time. We have a big weekend with the first race for Todd (Gilliland) in the PEDIGREE® Truck Friday night, so we’re hoping both of us can have some success this weekend and bring home a couple of wins for PEDIGREE®.”

What does it take to be successful at Dover?
“Dover, being a concrete track, is challenging. They’re all a challenge but Dover is especially so, just because of the way you have to run around that place. The way tires sometimes wear out. The way the rubber gets put down there. You’ve got to be fast through the corner. Two-thirds of your lap time is through the turns rather than down the straightaway, so you definitely have to make sure you have a good handling racecar – one that’s good in the beginning of the run on low air pressures and one that’s good at the end of the run on high air pressures, and even through traffic, too. Some of the most challenging times are when you’re trying to get through traffic with guys.”

Do you enjoy racing at Dover?
“It’s definitely a fast racetrack. It’s a fun racetrack, too. It makes it interesting when you get to traffic, when you have to pass guys, when you’re kind of falling down into the hole and jumping back up out of the hole to the straightaways. It’s a good place to race. It’s a competitive racetrack and, when the rubber gets laid down, it definitely changes the whole atmosphere and the whole way you run around that place.” Does going from concrete to asphalt change the way the car handles? “We don’t run on an asphalt racetrack that’s banked like that or shaped like that. The mile tracks we go to that are asphalt are Phoenix and Loudon, and they are relatively flat. The concrete just changes the feel a little bit, of course, and changes the way you approach the racetrack, too.”

You have two Cup Series wins and a competitive history at Dover. What is your outlook with your history there?
“I love that place. It’s fun to race there and it’s a place I’m looking forward to going to with our PEDIGREE® Camry. I went there when I was 18 to race in the Xfinity Series for my first time. It will scare you the first time you race there. You carry so much speed at that racetrack and, for it to be a mile in length and for it to be concrete – concrete surfaces that we race on, anyway, are a little bit slick. It’s definitely a roller-coaster ride and you need to treat it like it’s fun and not to be scared of the place, I think, because you can get so much out of that place. There are two ways about it – you can probably be really, really good there, or really, really bad there. Some days you’re going to be better than others, obviously, with how you can get your car set up compared to the competition.”

Chase Elliott finished third in both 2016 Dover races

Chase Elliott is 10/1 to win at Dover Sunday.
Chase Elliott on what makes Dover unique
“Just the sensation of speed I think is very real there. The way the racetrack is shaped, only being one mile it seems fast. Some places seem faster than others although you might be going the same speed, but it is definitely a place that seems like it’s pretty quick.”

Chase Elliott will be available to members of the media on Friday, June 2, at 9:15 a.m. local time in the media center at Dover International Speedway.

NAPA AUTO PARTS: NAPA AUTO PARTS will grace the hood of the No. 24 Chevrolet SS again this weekend at Dover International Speedway. The Atlanta-based company will serve as majority sponsor for Chase Elliott and the No. 24 team for 24 NASCAR Cup Series races this year.

DOVER STATS: The Dawsonville, Georgia, native is set to make his third Cup start at Dover this weekend. Elliott has collected third-place finishes in both Cup Series starts at the one-mile concrete oval and averages a starting position of 11.0 and a finishing position of 3.0. Elliott also has four starts in the NASCAR XFINITY Series at the Dover, Delaware, track. In those four starts, the 21-year-old driver has garnered two top-five finishes, four top-10s, led 19 laps and averages a starting position of 6.0 and finishing position of 5.2.

TESTING AT CHICAGOLAND: Elliott and the No. 24 team will represent Hendrick Motorsports at the Chicagoland Speedway Goodyear tire test on Tuesday, June 6, and Wednesday, June 7. The Cup Series will return to Chicago for the first race of the playoffs on September 17.

600 REWIND: Elliott started Sunday night’s 600-mile race in third. Despite losing a position while testing out the high line, Elliott maintained a top-five position running fifth as the race began to unfold. On Lap 19, Elliott struck a piece of debris dropped by another car, causing damage to the No. 24 NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet SS. As Elliott’s car slowed, a competitor made contact with the No. 24 machine, causing both cars to spin. The accident ended Elliott's day early with a 38th-place finish.

CARS 3: In February, it was announced that Elliott would voice the character of “Chase Racelott” in the upcoming Disney Pixar movie "Cars 3" and would be among a few other familiar voices. To see the first image of Elliott’s "Cars 3" character, click here. Like Elliott, Racelott is a second-generation Piston Cup racer. "Cars 3" is set to premiere in theaters on June 16.
