Bowyer fastest in first Talladega practice session

TALLADEGA, Ala. — Clint Bowyer, Aric Almirola and Jamie McMurray turned laps of 200 mph in the opening Sprint Cup Series practice Friday at Talladega Superspeedway.

Running in the draft during the hour-long session, Bowyer led all drivers with a lap of 200.385 mph, followed by Almirola (200.268) and McMurray (200.117).

Eight drivers topped 199 mph: Michael McDowell, Travis Kvapil, Kyle Larson, Landon Cassill, Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch and Greg Biffle. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was 12th.

There were no incidents in the opening practice session Friday. The final 50-minute practice session for the Geico 500 featured just 21 drivers (with Kyle Busch the fastest at 195.205 mph) as more than half of the 46 teams entered opted not to risk wrecking their cars.

Qualifying is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. ET Saturday for the race Sunday.
