Dover Betting Preview: 2017 AAA 400 Drive for Autism

Is this the week a Joe Gibbs Racing driver finally wins in 2017?
LAS VEGAS -- This week we get the first race of the season in the northeastern part of the country with the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway's 1-mile high-banked concrete layout known as the Monster Mile. It's a fast track track with lots of room and multiple grooves, but it's still kind of a short track so drivers get in the way of each other and keep things interesting. All drivers respect the Monster.

“It’s called the Monster Mile for a reason – the track can chew up cars and spit them out," said 2011 Dover winner Kurt Busch. "It’s because of those tough transitions into the corners with the high banking and even the high-banked straightaways. It’s tough to do that sharp of a turn on a mile racetrack. It’s like you literally jump down into the corner and then jump back up out of the corner onto the straightaway, and so those points of the track are the toughest part – the transition from straightaway to corner. It’s a fun track to drive.”

There's no other track like the Monster Mile on the circuit, but the best comparison would probably be Bristol's half-mile concrete track. Because of the steep banking and concrete, crew chiefs that do well at Bristol usually brings the same car and set-up the Dover. So before you make your wagers this week, take a look at what happened in April at Bristol.

Jimmie Johnson won that race, taking the the lead from Kevin Harvick with 21 laps to go. Kyle Larson led the most laps (202) and finished sixth while Martin Truex Jr. led the second-most laps (116) and finished eighth. Clint Bowyer would finish second and Matt Kenseth would finish fourth.

Kenseth might be someone to keep an eye on this week and seek out high odds before practice begins. He hasn't won a race all season, nor has any of his Joe Gibbs teammates, but this is a place he likes very much and you have the Bristol thing going for you as well. You should be able to get 15-to-1 or higher on him. He's a three-time winner at Dover, including winning this race last year. He's been seventh or better in six of his last seven starts there and has a 12.8 average finish in 36 starts.

Chase Elliott finished third in both 2016 Dover races

Chase Elliott is 10/1 to win at Dover Sunday.
Chase Elliott on what makes Dover unique
“Just the sensation of speed I think is very real there. The way the racetrack is shaped, only being one mile it seems fast. Some places seem faster than others although you might be going the same speed, but it is definitely a place that seems like it’s pretty quick.”

Chase Elliott will be available to members of the media on Friday, June 2, at 9:15 a.m. local time in the media center at Dover International Speedway.

NAPA AUTO PARTS: NAPA AUTO PARTS will grace the hood of the No. 24 Chevrolet SS again this weekend at Dover International Speedway. The Atlanta-based company will serve as majority sponsor for Chase Elliott and the No. 24 team for 24 NASCAR Cup Series races this year.

DOVER STATS: The Dawsonville, Georgia, native is set to make his third Cup start at Dover this weekend. Elliott has collected third-place finishes in both Cup Series starts at the one-mile concrete oval and averages a starting position of 11.0 and a finishing position of 3.0. Elliott also has four starts in the NASCAR XFINITY Series at the Dover, Delaware, track. In those four starts, the 21-year-old driver has garnered two top-five finishes, four top-10s, led 19 laps and averages a starting position of 6.0 and finishing position of 5.2.

TESTING AT CHICAGOLAND: Elliott and the No. 24 team will represent Hendrick Motorsports at the Chicagoland Speedway Goodyear tire test on Tuesday, June 6, and Wednesday, June 7. The Cup Series will return to Chicago for the first race of the playoffs on September 17.

600 REWIND: Elliott started Sunday night’s 600-mile race in third. Despite losing a position while testing out the high line, Elliott maintained a top-five position running fifth as the race began to unfold. On Lap 19, Elliott struck a piece of debris dropped by another car, causing damage to the No. 24 NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet SS. As Elliott’s car slowed, a competitor made contact with the No. 24 machine, causing both cars to spin. The accident ended Elliott's day early with a 38th-place finish.

CARS 3: In February, it was announced that Elliott would voice the character of “Chase Racelott” in the upcoming Disney Pixar movie "Cars 3" and would be among a few other familiar voices. To see the first image of Elliott’s "Cars 3" character, click here. Like Elliott, Racelott is a second-generation Piston Cup racer. "Cars 3" is set to premiere in theaters on June 16.

Kurt Busch using chassis making 2017 debut at Dover

Kurt Busch is 30/1 to win this week at Dover.
Chassis No. 951:
Kurt Busch will pilot Chassis No. 951 in Sunday’s AAA 400 Drive for Autism at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. Built new for 2015, Chassis No. 951 debuted at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July, when Busch was able to overcome a flat tire to come home with a hard-fought eighth-place finish. It then saw action at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois, where Busch overcame a flat tire on lap 86 and a green-flag pit stop that put him a lap down to finish third. Chassis No. 951 made its final start of the 2015 season at HomesteadMiami Speedway, when Busch scraped the wall but fought back to bring home an eighth-place finish.

Chassis No. 951 spent much of the 2016 season as a backup racecar but was called into service at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City after an accident coming off turn four on his last lap of final practice forced the No. 41 team to unload the chassis and start the race from the rear of the field. Busch overcame persistent handling issues to finish 13th. Since then, the car has received chassis updates and the body has been updated in preparation for its first start of the 2017 season.

Famed No. 3 RCR Chevy Back in Winners Circle!

Austin Dillon wins first career Cup race and pays out at 100-to-1 odds in Las Vegas.

Dover Results

CONCORD, N.C. – Armed with a new crew chief and a gas tank that held just enough fuel to get him to the end of 600 miles with less than a second to spare, Austin Dillon won the first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series of his career and put the vaunted No. 3 Chevrolet back in Victory Lane for the first time since 2000.

Working for the first time in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series with crew chief Justin Alexander, Dillon was one of eight drivers who stayed on the track when the strongest cars in the Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway—the Toyotas of eventual runner-up Kyle Busch and third-place Martin Truex Jr.—came to pit road on Lap 368 of 400.

Saving fuel for the entire run, Dillon trailed Jimmie Johnson, who also stayed out, until the seven-time champion ran out of gas with less than three laps left. With Busch and Truex in hot pursuit, Dillon had just enough fuel to get to the finish line.

The No. 3 Chevrolet owned by Dillon’s grandfather, Richard Childress, returned to the winner’s circle for the first time since the late Dale Earnhardt won his last race on Oct. 15, 2000 at Talladega. After Earnhardt’s death in the 2001 Daytona 500, Childress retired the number in NASCAR’s premier series until Dillon ran his first full season of Cup racing in 2014.

"It hasn’t sunk in yet," Dillon said in Victory Lane. "I can’t believe it. I was just really focused on those last laps. My fiancé wrote in the car, ‘When you keep God in first-place, he will take you places you never imagined.’

"And, I never imagined I be here at the 600 Victory Lane. Praise the Lord and all these guys who work so hard; and my pit crew is the best on pit road. I love it for them. We’re in the playoffs. It’s awesome."

Dillon, who led only the final two laps, had to restrain himself from using too much fuel in pursuit of Johnson.

"I was just trying to be patient with the No. 48," Dillon said. "I could see him saving. I thought I’d saved enough early, where I could attack at the end, but I tried to wait as long as possible. And when he ran out, I figured I’d go back in and save where I was lifting, and it worked out.

"I ran out at the line, and it gurgled all around just to do one little spin and push it back to Victory Lane."

Matt Kenseth ran fourth, followed by Joe Gibbs racing teammate Denny Hamlin, as Toyotas claimed positions two through five.

The fireworks started early at the 1.5-mile track, more than six hours before the race ended. On Lap 20, five laps before a scheduled competition caution, a large piece of debris shot from the back of Jeffrey Earnhardt’s smoking No. 33 car into the path of Chase Elliott’s No. 24 Chevrolet.

The debris knocked a hole in the nose of Elliott’s car, and flames erupted beneath the engine compartment as fluid spilled from the Chevy. Brad Keselowski skidded through the oil, as if his No. 2 Ford had hit a patch of ice, and piled into the back of Elliott’s car, destroying both machines.

"Somebody broke, and there was just oil everywhere, and I couldn’t turn," Keselowski said. "I ran into the back of Chase. Somebody broke in front of him, and then he ran over what they broke and then he broke, so there were two cars broke in front of me and just oil everywhere.

"You couldn’t stop and turn. You couldn’t do anything. It’s a real bummer for our team. We had a really fast Miller Lite Ford, and I think we had a shot at winning tonight, but that’s how it goes."

Elliott was equally disappointed that his car was on a wrecker in the garage.

"The No. 33 broke something ahead of me and I ended up hitting it," Elliott said. "I hit it pretty hard. I knew it had hurt our nose at least, then I saw some flames and figured we were laying down oil too, I guess.

"Brad couldn’t get stopped and ended up kind of finishing us off, but it was a bummer. I hate it. I don’t really know what you do about stuff like that. Just move on."

After the subsequent restart on Lap 28, the rest of the first 100-lap stage ran caution-free, with Kyle Busch passing Truex on Lap 90 and pulling away to secure the playoff point accorded the stage winner.

Truex was leading when the caution flag flew for the third time on Lap 142 after Matt DiBenedetto’s No. 32 Ford slammed into the outside wall. Moments later, NASCAR red-flagged the race because of the threat of heavy rain and lightning in the area.

The rain arrived and drenched the track, forcing a delay of 1 hour, 39 minutes, 56 seconds before the cars started rolling again.

Truex dominated after a restart on Lap 176 and won the second stage going away. The driver of the No. 78 Toyota appeared headed for another victory in Stage 3 until series leader Kyle Larson blew a tire and pounded the wall on Lap 292.

"I got really loose into (Turn) 3 and hit the wall and got a lot of damage, and the tire started to go down and then exploded in (Turn) 1," Larson said. "I just hate it that I made a mistake there in Turn 3 and got in the wall.

"I wasn’t even running hard up there. I just got loose and then I hit it and it ruined our day. I’m hoping to hold onto the point lead and then go to Dover next week and try to do better."

(As it turned out, Truex took over the series lead by five points over Larson, with Keselowski 82 points back in third-place.)

After Larson’s accident, Truex lost three spots on pit road on Lap 294, ceding the stage win to Denny Hamlin.

But Truex, who led a race-high 233 laps—and led the most laps in the Coca-Cola 600 for the third straight year with only last year’s win to show for it—regained the top spot after a restart on lap 334, clearing Kyle Busch through the first two corners, and soon pulled away to a two-second lead.

Then Dillon’s fuel-mileage play changed everything.

2016 AAA Dover Betting Notes

Jimmie Johnson’s performances at Dover International Speedway have been one of the more consistent, bankable betting options offered at sports books.

Johnson has won 10 of 28 starts on the high-banked, one-mile concrete layout, including a sweep during his 2002 rookie year — he won only three races that season.

Johnson has won seven of the past 14 races there and three of five, including last May, so his 7-2 odds to win Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup AAA 400 Drive for Autism look attractive.

There’s such a huge sample size, and with so many changes to rules, aero-packages and body designs, the only relevant constant over Johnson’s 28 races has been the driver, crew chief, owner and Dover’s concrete known as “The Monster Mile.”

The only reason Johnson isn’t in the 5-2 or 3-1 range is because his competition has narrowed the gap. Between all the Joe Gibbs Racing drivers, Team Penske and a portion of Stewart Haas’ stable, Johnson has his hands full.

Last spring at Dover, Kevin Harvick gave up the lead to Johnson with 23 laps left and finished second. It was Johnson’s only laps led of the day. In the fall race, Harvick led 355 of 400 laps and won at Dover for the first time in 30 starts. He’s using that same chassis this weekend.

Odds to win: Johnson easy Dover favorite based on track record 10 wins

Jimmie Johnson has Dover figured out better than anyone, ever!
LAS VEGAS -- The 12th race of the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup season takes us to the northeast for the first time for Sunday's AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway. Four of the six drivers to win so far have multiple wins and one of those, Jimmie Johnson, has a Dover record 10 wins over 28 starts, which includes winning three of the past five on the high-banked, one-mile concrete oval known as The Monster Mile.

Because of Johnson's dominance of winning once every 2.8 times on the track, the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook has installed him as the 7-to-2 favorite. His 2,999 laps led are also a track record, but even when he doesn't dominate, he still manages to find ways to win. Take last spring when eight drivers combined to lead the first 377 laps, but as the race went on he got stronger and the only laps he led on the day were the final 23.

“There is just something about Dover that fits my driving style," said Johnson of his affection for the track. "There is some weird pressure that comes with that — we aren’t too happy when we aren’t running up to our expectations. It’s a tough race for sure and so many things can go wrong but it also suits (No. 48 team crew chief) Chad Knaus' style. When I think back to having 10 wins at Dover I just think about the three or four that got away from me over the years. It’s an unbelievable track, I wish we raced at Dover more than twice a year.”

The rest of the field has their hands full again this week and as you can see by the low price, Johnson winning at Dover is more of an expectancy.

Here's a look at all the drivers odds this week, along their Dover resume:

NASCAR at Dover betting odds, driver breakdown

Jimmie JOHNSON 7/2 - He became the fifth driver to have 10 or more wins at a single track when he won at Dover last May. He's got an eighth-place average finish and has won seven of the past 14 races, which somehow seems to make 7-to-2 odds to win seem like value.

Kyle BUSCH 5/1 - He's a two-time winner — the last in 2010 — and comes in having won three of the past six races to take over the series lead for victories. He finished second in this race last fall. His crew chief and lug nut changer will be suspended for this race, but the system is well rehearsed and ready to roll no matter who sits atop the pit box.

Kevin HARVICK 6/1 - After 30 career Monster Mile starts, he finally got his first victory there last fall by leading 355 of the 400 laps, and he's bringing that same chassis back again this week. In the spring race he led 91 laps and was 23 laps away from victory before being passed and settled for another runner-up. He was the top performer between both 2015 Dover races.

Distance: 400 laps/400 miles

2015 Winner: Jimmie Johnson

Express Notes:

Kansas Recap:
Denny Hamlin was involved in a crash with just 26 laps to go in Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway, causing major damage to the #11 FedEx Freight Toyota and relegating the team to a 37th-place finish in the event won by Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch. Hamlin started third, but battled numerous issues on pit road. A problem early on with the left front tire dropped the #11 deep in the running order and Hamlin was forced to the tail end of the field twice during the 267-lap event for pit road speeding penalties. Following the penalties and with the race winding down, Hamlin was mired back in 18th when the caution came out with 32 laps to go. Crew chief Mike Wheeler called Hamlin to pit road for right-side tires only, catapulting the FedEx car to sixth for the restart with 29 laps left. Three laps later, Hamlin attempted to dive to the inside of second place Brad Keselowski, but Keselowski defended the move forcing Hamlin to the middle with Kyle Larson outside. The jockeying for position entering Turn 3 unsettled the air around the cars and both Keselowski and Hamlin spun, making contact with other cars in the process. The finish dropped Hamlin one spot to 13th in the NASCAR standings following Kansas, 117 points behind leader Kevin Harvick after 11 of 26 regular season races.

Hamlin Conversation — DOVER:

How can the FedEx team regain its winning form?

“Our FedEx team has the speed needed each week to compete for race wins, but some mistakes that I have made and other issues have taken us out of contention. Once we clean up some of the mistakes, I think we’ll be back at the front battling for victories. That’s the great part of this new Chase system. We are fortunate to have a win already, so adding wins is all we are focused on at this point. We’ve had some strong runs over the last couple years at Dover, and hopefully this weekend we can be there at the end.”

World Center Marriott Along for the Ride at Dover: The FedEx Office location inside the World Center Marriott in Orlando will be recognized with its “5517” code numbers on the b-post of the #11 FedEx Office Toyota this weekend at Dover.
