Joey Logano won the 2016 All-Star Race; he's 12/1 to win Saturday. |
We've seen Kevin Harvick dominate with three wins in four races on 1.5-mile tracks this season and the race he didn't win, he finished second. Because no points are involved in the All-Star Race, NASCAR thought they would incorporate a new car similar to what the Xfinity Series used last season at Indianapolis. The car has a raised rear spoiler at six-inches to create more drag and also front aero ducts that will move air to the side of the car before it hits the front wheel. The most drastic change is putting restrictor-plates on the engine to restrict the air flow which essentially slows the car down. Restrictor-plates have never been used on 1.5-mile tracks before. The overall effect is likely to have all cars being somewhat equal. We'll see how that plays out in Friday's practices and qualifying.
The 17 drivers who got automatic bids to the All-Star Race were either winners from a race in 2017 or 2018, past All-Star Race winners or past Cup Champions. Three more drivers will also make the race by winning one of the three stages of the Open qualifying race and another spot available will be voted in by fans. The All-Star Race format is broken up into four stages -- 30 laps, 20 laps, 20 laps and the final 10 lap dash to the finish.
I'm expecting the unexpected, so here's what I see happening Saturday night:
