Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race:
History
· There have been 33 Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Races.
· The first Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race was held on May 25, 1985 at Charlotte Motor Speedway; the non-points event was won by NASCAR Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip (Buick).
· 32 of 33 Monster Energy All-Star Races have been held at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
· In 1986, the event was held at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and won by Bill Elliott (Ford).
· The 1986 season was also the first year for what is now known as the Monster Energy Open. There have been 36 Open events, one per year since 1986; except in 2015, 2002, 2001 and 2000 it was held as two events with the winners moving on to the All-Star Race.
Starts
· 99 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers have run in at least one Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race; 81 drivers have competed in more than one.
· Mark Martin leads the series in Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race appearances with 24 starts.
· Kevin Harvick and Matt Kenseth lead all active drivers in Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race starts with 17, followed by Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman with 16 each.
· The All-Star Race has featured a field that has ranged from 10 drivers in 1986 to 27 in 2002. Last season’s field had 20 participants.
· Davey Allison leads the series in average starting position in the Monster Energy All-Star Race with a 3.857.

Poles
· Terry Labonte won the inaugural Busch Pole Award for the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race in 1985.
· A total of 18 different drivers have won the Busch Pole Award for the Monster Energy All-Star Race.
· Nine of the 18 pole winners have multiple poles.
· Bill Elliott leads the series in Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race poles with four (1987, 1997, 1998 and 2000).

· Davey Allison (1991 and 1992), Terry Labonte (1988 and 1999) and Mark Martin (1998 and 2005) are the only other drivers to post multiple victories in the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race.

Kurt Busch won from the first starting position in 2010, but Qualifying was cancelled for that event due to weather.
· The front row is the most proficient starting positions in the field, producing more winners (five winners each) than any other starting positions in the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race – most recent was Kyle Busch’s victory last season from the outside front row (second starting position).
· 58% of the Monster Energy All-Star Race wins have come from starting inside the top five.
· The deepest in the field a Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star race winner has started was 27th, by Ryan Newman in 2002.
· Hendrick Motorsports leads the series in Monster Energy All-Star wins with nine: Jimmie Johnson (four: 2003, 2006, 2012, 2013), Jeff Gordon (three: 1995, 1997, 2001) and Terry Labonte (two: 1999, 1988).
· Several other active teams have won the Monster Energy All-Star Races: Richard Childress Racing and Roush Fenway Racing have four (4) wins each, and Team Penske has three including last season victory. Joe Gibbs Racing has two wins. Chip Ganassi Racing, Wood Brothers Racing, Richard Petty Motorsports and Stewart Haas Racing each have one All-Star Race win.
· Seven of the 17 drivers who are qualified for the 2018 Monster Energy All-Star Race are looking for their first win in the event: Ryan Blaney, Clint Bowyer, Austin Dillon, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Larson, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Martin Truex Jr.
· Dale Earnhardt Jr. is the only driver to win the Monster Energy All-Star Race (2000), the Monster Energy Open (2012) and the Fan Vote (2011).

Track / Event Specific Stats
· The 2016 Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race set the series record for the event’s number of lead changes with 13. The previous record for lead changes was 10 in 2004.
· The record for different leaders in the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race is nine in 2002. Last season’s race had four different leaders.
· Two of the 33 Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Races were led by a single driver from flag-to-flag – in 1990 Dale Earnhardt led all 70 laps and in 1991 Davey Allison also led all 70 laps (100%). Both instances hold the event’s record for highest percentage of laps led.
· The largest number of laps led by the winner of a single Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race was Bill Elliott’s 82 laps led at Atlanta in 1986. He led 82 of the 83 scheduled laps (99%).
· The fewest laps led by the eventual winner of the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race is two laps – it happened three times – 1993 (Dale Earnhardt), 2000 (Dale Earnhardt Jr.) and 2009 (Tony Stewart).
· The record number of cautions in the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race is seven (three times: 2014, 2013 and 2009). Last season there were three cautions, all for Stage Conclusion.
· The record number of caution laps in the Monster Energy All-Star Race is 23 caution laps in 2002.
· The series best driver rating performance by a Monster Energy All-Star Race winner was Carl Edwards’performance in 2011, when he posted a 141.7 driver rating. The next best was Jimmie Johnson’s 132.1 in 2006.
All-Star Fan Vote

· The Monster Energy All-Star Fan Vote was introduced to the format in 2004. The first Fan Vote winner was Ken Schrader, driving for BAM Racing.
· In 2008, Kasey Kahne became the first driver to get into the Monster Energy All-Star Race by the Fan Vote and go on to win the event. Kahne started 24th in the All-Star race and won.
· Danica Patrick became the first driver to win more than one Fan Vote into the Monster Energy All-Star Race (2013, 2015).
· Chase Elliott became the first driver to win it in consecutive seasons last year (2016, 2017).
· Kasey Kahne, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Joey Logano and Carl Edwards are the only four drivers who have won the Monster Energy All-Star Race and the Fan Vote. Kahne won both in 2008, Earnhardt Jr. won the race in 2000 and the Fan Vote in 2011. Logano won the Fan Vote in 2009 and the All-Star race in 2016. Edwards won the Fan Vote in 2010 and the All-Star Race in 2011.
Monster Energy Open (formerly The Showdown)
· The Monster Energy Open was first introduced into the All-Star format in 1986 at Atlanta Motor Speedway – the first event was won by Benny Parsons.
· A total of 28 different drivers have won the Monster Energy Open; led by Sterling Marlin with four wins (1988, ’89, ’93 and ‘04).
· Six of the 28 Monster Energy Open winners have multiple wins – Sterling Marlin (four), Clint Bowyer, Jeremy Mayfield, Martin Truex Jr., Michael Waltrip and Todd Bodine each have two victories.
· Three drivers have won consecutive Monster Energy Opens – Sterling Marlin (1988-89), Michael Waltrip (1991-92) and Clint Bowyer (2014-15).
· Last season’s Monster Energy Open was broken into three stages – the Stage 1 winner was Clint Bowyer; the Stage 2 winner was Ryan Blaney; the race winner (Final Stage) was Daniel Suarez.
· No driver has ever won the Monster Energy Open and advanced to win the Monster Energy All-Star Race.
