Junior is on a restrictor plate roll. |
Odds as low as 9-to-2 on a restrictor-plate race are highly unusual. In fact, the last time we’ve seen it may have been with Earnhardt Jr. during his Dale Earnhardt Inc. days, when he won five of seven races at Talladega (2001-2004), and his entire team – which included Michael Waltrip winning the only races of his career – had a decided advantage.
Over the past 10 years of plate racing, things have turned around to the point where cars are more equal on these tracks than we’ve ever seen before. The top teams don't have the advantage they have on smaller tracks, which makes races at Daytona and Talladega crap shoots, and it’s why sports books are able to offer high odds even on the best drivers.
But Earnhardt Jr. is showing the same consistency of his younger days. He's always been a top-notch plate racer, but there was a major gap in his wins on them from 2004 to 2014. This season, he's won the last two plate races, and they've been his only wins of the season.
