Green Flag Drops on NASCAR's Playoffs Sunday at Darlington

Denny Hamlin won at Darlington in May.
It’s NASCAR Playoff time, and it’s right on schedule to begin at Darlington Raceway with no changes to dates or locations from the original schedule as we’ve seen with a makeshift schedule during the regular season due to the pandemic.

For the next 10 weeks, the 16 drivers eligible to compete for the 2020 NASCAR Cup Championship will be chopped slowly with four drivers being eliminated every three weeks until all we have left is four drivers, or the Championship 4, racing at Phoenix Raceway on Nov. 8. The best finish among those final four drivers wins the championship.

After tinkering with the setup over the years, NASCAR has a nice and easy-to-understand format where those who were great in the regular season are rewarded properly in the postseason with a head start.

Kevin Harvick led the regular season with seven wins and won a bunch of stages so he starts out off with a 57-point lead over the No. 16 seed Matt DiBenedetto when the drop the flag for the Cook Out Southern 500 in South Carolina. Denny Hamlin had the second-most wins with six and begins with a 47-point lead.

Just for perspective, William Byron gained 44 points for winning at Daytona Saturday. Those head start points will carry over into each of the next nine weeks, but the Championship 4 at Phoenix will be reset with all having equal points.

While accumulating the most points to advance is the goal, winning races is the name of the game. The eligible drivers who win races in each stage automatically qualify for the next round regardless of where they stand in points. Winning races is the best way to take care of business.

The added bonus of coolness this season is the final race being at the flat 1-mile layout at Phoenix after being at Homestead-Miami Speedway since the postseason began in 2004. Being successful at the 1.5-mile tracks became the main focus for teams because there were more races on them and those who did the best usually won the championship at Homestead.

Hendrick cars are good bet in Auto Club 400

Jimmie Johnson is 25/1 to win Sunday.
None of the four Hendrick Motorsports cars won Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 in Las Vegas, but they were the talk of the day from most folks in the NASCAR betting and bookmaking community because at different junctures, at least three of them looked to have the best cars on the track.

It’s one of the main storylines heading into Sunday’s Auto Club 400 at Fontana because the race package used at Las Vegas will be used this week as well.

Do the Hendrick cars get a rating upgrade from the oddsmakers?

“No doubt,“ said Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook director Ed Salmons. “It was obvious today (Sunday at Las Vegas) that the best long-run speeds were from Chase Elliott and William Byron. And then late in the race, I thought (Alex) Bowman looked great. He closed strong and had a car good enough to win.”

If simply looking at the Las Vegas results, you wouldn’t see much of an indication that it’s time to adjust rating on all four Hendrick Camaros because Joey Logano won and two other Camaros driven by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (3rd) and Austin Dillon (4th) finished ahead of Hendrick’s best finisher of Jimmie Johnson (5th). The three other Hendrick cars didn’t even finish in the top-10 due to mishaps in the final stage, but they were elite.

Hendrick cars only won one race last season with this race package (Bowman at Chicago), and the rules for the package are the same except for some tweaks to the front end and body of the Camaro. It’s obvious those changes had a huge impact and I can guarantee after seeing it just once that Chevrolet will win more than it did in 2019 when winning just twice in 18 races using this race package.

Elliott had the best car on Sunday, winning the first two stages and leading five times for 70 laps until he got a flat tire to start the final stage which put him a lap down and he settled for a 26th-place finish. The odd part about Elliott’s amazing performance, who was 14-1 to win, is that it wasn’t detected in either of Friday’s practice sessions. He was very ordinary and it was Bowman and Johnson that shined in single lap and average speeds.

When he went down, it was Byron, and then Bowman, who was chopping two-tenths of a second off the leader’s lead in the final 20 laps. And then it was Johnson who just keeping grooving like it was 2008. He can still win his fifth Vegas race this fall in what is expected to be his final playoffs.

But after a competitive race in Las Vegas, why would Johnson want to retire? The junk he’s been given the last two years probably made him feel as if he lost a step, or his reactionary time was slower. But Sunday’s race showed a vintage J.J. who has won 83 Cup races and seven Cup titles.

Aaron's 499 Preview: Earnhardt Jr. Should Contend For His Sixth Talladega Win

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

Two-car tandems will be on display again this week at Talladega (Getty)
This weeks race at the monster 2.66-mile high banked track of Talladega Superspeedway will be quite different from what we have seen in the last six weeks of NASCAR races. Even though we’ve had a few surprises like Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick winning while the likes of Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin haven’t, restrictor-plate racing levels the playing field for everyone, especially the modern 2011 type of restrictor-plate racing.

The Daytona 500 was the last plate race run and was won by Trevor Bayne who was driving an underfunded Wood Brothers car. In the last six races, there has been no better example of just how underfunded the car Bayne drives is, but all of sudden, this week he’s a contender again, as are the 42 other drivers who start Sunday’s race.

Bayne wasn’t the only surprise finisher at Daytona. We also saw David Gilliland finish third, Bobby Labonte fourth and Regan Smith seventh; all drivers who don’t fit into many betting strategies.

The new style of plate racing that featured two-car tandems is likely to be the quickest way around the track again, meaning that although many of the drivers don't like that type of racing, they also want to win and have to play the game. I may get worn out with this type of racing as a fan after this week, but at Daytona I kind of liked it just because it was different and unique. After having a nice mixture of differing tracks the last six races, I'm very eager to jump back into tag-team tandem racing.

The top contenders to win this week all have the ECR engines and won every plate race in 2010. They also combined to have some of the best practice sessions during Daytona speed weeks. Jeff Burton, Clint Bowyer, Harvick, Juan Montoya and Jamie McMurray will all be good once again this week.

The next wave of contenders begins with Kurt Busch who won the Bud Shootout and one of the Gatorade Duel races at Daytona. He finished fifth in the Daytona 500 and will be looking for his first plate win in a NASCAR points race. He’s come so close at both Talladega and Daytona and I think I have bet on him in each and every one of those losses, so there’s no point in stopping now.

Maybe Junior's turn this week?
The driver that could surprise everyone is Dale Earnhardt Jr. who comes in on his best stretch while driving for Hendrick Motorsports. In his last six starts, Junior’s worst finish position was 11th. He came a few laps from winning at Martinsville and now has gone 100 straight races without a win after finishing ninth at Texas. He is a five-time winner at Talladega who has been runner-up three times. Based on the way his season is going, there may be no better time to bet on Earnhardt Jr. to win than this week.

Jeff Gordon is a six-time winner at Talladega who should find himself in the mix of things late in the race. The Roush Ford’s are also on the rise in plate races the last three years. The little guy of the group, David Ragan, has had some of his best career finishes at Talladega with a fourth, third and sixth place finish.

I’m going with the epic return of Junior to the winners circle. It's pretty stupid betting on a driver who hasn't won in 100 races, let alone the fact that his odds are 12-to-1, which is even more rediculous. But I guess I'm stubborn that way in the same sense that I keep betting on Kurt Busch in these races. However, my stupidity and stubbornness does pay off once in a while. I had Kevin Harvick for eight straight races at Bristol -- regardless of how he practiced -- until he finally won in 2005.

I can actually visualize Kurt Busch or Junior winning this week, which is scary, because that means I'm actually living too much in fantasy-land, which of course doesn't have sports books that pay out real cash.

I'm also going to take a small poke at a driver like David Gilliland or Trevor Bayne at odds of 100-to-1 or higher, which isn't as crazy or far-fetched as maybe Junior winning. In eight plate races dating back to 2009 we have had two drivers pay out odds higher than 100-to-1; Bayne this year and Brad Keselowski at Talladega in 2009. Gilliland's team is actually bringing their same third-place car from Daytona and are talking like contenders this week. Bayne's car, unfortunately, is in the Daytona USA museum.

With this type of racing, anything can happen. Even your wildest dream can come true where no bet is a bad bet until it loses.

Top-5 Finish Prediction:
1) #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. (12/1)
2) #22 Kurt Busch (14/1)
3) #29 Kevin Harvick (8/1)
4) #1 Jamie McMurray (12/1)
5) #33 Clint Bowyer (14/1)

Texas Samsung Mobile 500 Preview: Kenseth Looks To Be Driver To Key On

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

Earnhardt Jr. is all smiles this year after five straight solid finishes
Everything is big in Texas except the NASCAR Sprint Cup point lead after six races that seems to shuffle to a new leader almost every week. Las Vegan Kyle Busch is mere five points ahead of Carl Edwards with the next seven drivers in line all within 19 points of Edwards. The changes to the point structure make the points appear smaller than they are, but it really has been a competitive season thus far with a legitimate case made for at least 12 drivers to win the Championship.

Because of the competitiveness, we’ve seen a fluctuation with the odds to win the season championship at the Las Vegas Hilton Super Book with quite a few drivers odds differing from what they opened with back in December.

Defending five-time champ Jimmie Johnson opened the season as the 5-to-2 favorite to win for the sixth straight year, but has been bumped to 7-to-2 in light of all the new serious contenders. Johnson moved up two positions in points last week and is 3-points ahead of Kevin Harvick, a driver that has made believers out of Las Vegas oddsmakers. Harvick opened at 8-to-1 and is now 9-to-2 as the second choice to win the title with Carl Edwards.

Last season Harvick made a drastic improvement on the tracks that rule the season, the 1.5-mile and 2-mile tracks which are essential to winning a championship. Already this season, Harvick has won on two tracks he has never won on before, including Martinsville, a track that he hadn’t gained a top-five on for his entire career until the fall of last season. When looking at all the other tracks, he’s got those covered too; Road courses, check! Restrictor-plate tracks, check! Short tracks, check! And intermediate tracks like Phoenix, New Hampshire and Richmond, check!

Harvick has the whole season covered. Then when adding in that X-factor of his team getting better in the later part of races like has happened the last two weeks, well, it’s not hard to see why Las Vegas sports books think he’s just as capable as the trendy pick of Edwards to unseat Johnson this year.

Perhaps the biggest mover in respectability with Las Vegas is Dale Earnhardt Jr. who moved up four positions in points with his runner-up finish last week. Junior sits eighth in points and has gone from 50-to-1 opening odds to 20-to-1. Through the six races run, his worst finish has come on what is typically his best type of track, a 24th-place finish at Daytona in the opener. Junior has finished 12th or better since then in the ensuing five races.

The driver to take a major tumble in odds has been Denny Hamlin who opened as the 6-to-1 second choice to win, but has slid all the way back to 10-to-1 because his team still looks like they’re in a daze from Homestead last year when they blew the title. Despite being 19th in points, there still is considerable respect for Hamlin and what he’s capable of doing which is why Las Vegas only has four drivers listed with lower odds than Hamlin.

Hamlin and Harvick go for 3-in-a-row this week
This Saturday night’s race at Texas Motor Speedway will see Harvick and Hamlin trying to get a three-peat. For Harvick, now dubbed as the ‘closer’, he has won the last two races on the season with late come from behind wins. It’s the second time Harvick has won back-to-back races in his career and each of those wins this year also represented his first win ever on the track. Harvick would really shock the racing world with another win becoming the first driver since Jimmie Johnson since 2007 to win three straight races. If he does, it would also be his first win at Texas.

Hamlin doesn’t have a win this year, but is coming into this race having won two Texas races in a row sweeping the 2010 season. Last week was supposed to be a confidence builder, or sort of a crutch, for the struggling Hamlin because he had won three in a row at Martinsville, but it didn’t happen. He finished 13th, his worst finish on his home state track since his first Cup start there. It wasn’t like he wasn’t good, though, he led quite a few laps and looked to have one of the top three cars on the track.

The drivers to watch this week can be found be looking at what happened in Las Vegas and a little bit from California. They are both good indicators to who will be strong on this high-banked super fast 1.5-mile track.

Kenseth was strong at Vegas and Fontana
The one who stands out the most is Matt Kenseth who also happens to have the best average finish of 7.3 on the track since he won in 2002. Kenseth started on the pole at Las Vegas, practiced well and finished 11th, a race won by teammate Carl Edwards. At California a couple of weeks ago, Kenseth finished fourth.

Edwards is a three-time winner at Texas, the most any driver has there, and in addition to his Vegas win, he also finished sixth at California. The interesting thing about Edwards at Texas is that he doesn’t have a top-five finish on the track with the exception of his three wins, which is why he has such a high average finish of 17.7 in his 12 starts. In his last three starts there, he’s had a 39th, 33rd and 19th.

It’s surprising that for all Johnson’s success at Las Vegas, Charlotte and Atlanta, that he wouldn’t have more than his one win in Texas. Even more surprising is that Johnson doesn’t have a win yet and has now gone 14 races dating back to last year without one. At Las Vegas and California, he didn’t give much indication in practice that he’d be a major player in the race, but in each instance, his team worked hard throughout the race adjusting the car and made it strong at the end. In addition to Johnson’s lone win on the Lone Star track, he also has four runner-up finishes. This week he'll be using his runner-up chassis from Fontana.

Others to key on this week include both Busch brothers, Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart. It could be argued that Stewart had the best car at both Las Vegas and California, but had some unfortunate mishaps at the end of each.

A sleeper for the week could be Juan Pablo Montoya. He's never done much at Texas, but is using the same car that he finished third with at Las Vegas.

Top 5 Finish Prediction:
1) #17 Matt Kenseth (20/1)
2) #14 Tony Stewart (12/1)
3) #99 Carl Edwards (9/2)
4) #49 Jimmie Johnson (6/1)
5) #29 Kevin Harvick (8/1)

3 Things Certain: Lakers, Ohio State and Edwards Will All Win Championships in 2011

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

Lebron James makes it so easy to root against him
After the past weekend of events, I came to the realization that the Championships are all but decided in the NBA, College Basketball and NASCAR. I’ve been believing the sentiment for some time now, but it wasn’t until Sunday that it all clicked together and had me thinking, “Yes, this is going to happen”. The Lakers will win their third straight title, the Buckeyes will be cutting down the nets next month and Carl Edwards will dethrone defending five-time champ Jimmie Johnson as NASCAR’s 2011 champion.

It’s not exactly going out on a limb considering that the Las Vegas Hilton Super Book have the Lakers as 5-to-2 co-favorites with the Celtics, Ohio State 3-to-1 favorites to win and Edwards the second choice behind Johnson to win at 5-to-1. But still, who goes on record with a trio of sports like that and how does it just come upon as a thought process in just one day like happened to me Sunday?

For the Lakers, it’s been them all along, but they’ve had to hurdle a lot questions about their drive and togetherness along the way while a team like the Spurs have rolled to the best record with consistent play without taking any nights off. The Lakers look flat at times and do take the occasional night off against bad teams like the Cavaliers or Bobcats. In fact it was just three weeks ago when the Lakers lost to those teams in the middle of a three game losing streak that had the media, and fans, both seriously questioning whether this was the end of Lakers run.

I don’t normally root for the favorites, and especially not the Lakers, but I find myself drawn to them this season. I marvel at Kobe Bryant like I would as a kid. Even though Phil Jackson appears to say nothing all of the time, I still am in awe of his coaching style and how he gets the most out of all of his players somehow.

Most of all, I have the Lakers as the team to root for in the anti-Heat movement. I can’t think of any team, or player, that I have rooted so passionately against than this years Miami Heat. During the Heat’s four game losing streak, I have popped open bottles champagne like the ’72 Dolphins, celebrating their losses. All their hype and the naïve arrogance of Lebron James telling his home state on national television that he’s taking his talents to South Beach immediately had me hoping for their demise and also had me looking for someone to knock them off.

The Heat look as though they’ll have a tough time just getting out of the east, let alone making the Finals. Since watching all the teams very closely, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Lakers can turn on the switch whenever they want. They are that good, and during their current seven game winning streak, they have shown that they are now getting prepped and serious for the money season that soon approaches.

Sullinger should lead Ohio State to Final Four
As we head into March Madness, there is one team I see that looks the most polished and that’s Ohio State. No one is heading into the tournament with more steam than the Buckeyes. Since losing at Purdue a couple weeks ago, Ohio State has destroyed their last four opponents by 19 points or more.

Sunday’s 28 point win against Wisconsin, one of only two teams to beat Ohio State this season, showed just how dangerous they are. The knock against Ohio State has been their inconsistent outside shooting, but on Sunday, they put on a show where they made 14 of 15 three-point baskets.

They have the Superstar in Jared Sullinger, great coaching with Thad Matta and are hitting on all cylinders at the right time. Taking 3-to-1 in the tournament is a gamble with so many crazy things that are bound to happen along the way, but the consistent nature of the Buckeyes make them hard to bet against.

Carl Edwards won the Las Vegas NASCAR race over the weekend which is a prelude of what is about to come. The Vegas tracks represents one of 10 races on 1.5-mile tracks and there are also three others on two-mile tracks that can be lumped in which form the largest group a similar style tracks on the circuit. The driver who does the best of these tracks usually win the Championship. This has been Johnson’s bread and butter the last five seasons, but it looks as though it Edward’s turn this year.

Edwards has the best chance of knocking off Johnson
We saw the momentum building towards the end of last season with Edwards winning the final two races and it has carried over into 2011. Edwards finished runner-up in the Daytona 500 and then had some trouble with Kyle Busch in Phoenix resulting in a poor finish. But the good news from that Phoenix race was that Edwards probably had the best car meaning that he can be expected to be equally good on the other five races that are similar with two each at Richmond and New Hampshire and then Phoenix again.

That’s 17 total races where we should expect the type of performance we saw out Edwards on Sunday. With the horsepower being as good as its ever been out of the new FR-9 engines, we should expect solid performances on other tracks like Dover and Pocono as well and then hope for the best in the three other plate races, the short tracks of Martinsville and Bristol and the two road courses.

Edwards currently sits third in points, just 7-point behind co-leaders Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch. If you feel like tying money up for a few months, getting 5-to-1 on Edwards right now is probably the best investment you could make in Las Vegas.

* Results from the February 28, 2010 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Odds courtesy of the Las Vegas Hilton Super Book.

Note: Matt Kenseth stood out in all practice and qualifying races this weekend at Las Vegas, but I’m not convinced his top speeds in all those sessions isn’t a matter of just being good for a few single laps. A top-five finish seems likely from him, but a few others look better based on great longer runs.

Roberts Weekly Driver Ratings
Each week I will provide an analysis of my top rated drivers on how well they will do in the race based on the following criteria:
• Practice sessions leading up to the weekend’s Sprint Cup race
• Chassis information on what was brought to each track by each team, good or bad
• Driver tendencies at certain tracks
• Recent and overall histories for each driver at each track
• Decipher poor past results with what really happened, good car -- or bad luck?
These final ratings should help assist in final betting strategies with the Las Vegas books or match-up and prop plays, as well as help in NASCAR fantasy leagues.

Final Practice Notes and Speeds

NASCAR In Vegas Usually Won By The Favorites, But Here's a Few Who Could Pay Large

BY MICAH ROBERTS
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Kenseth has a fast car and nice odds in the Vegas sports books
One of the most unique things about NASCAR in Las Vegas is being able to legally bet the races, something the thousands of fans who annually flock to the city have become adept at during 13 years of Sprint Cup racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The goal for most is to bet a little to win a lot. Unfortunately, that strategy has rarely paid off because the favorite almost always wins.
Regardless of configuration -- whether it's the relatively flat track the speedway was when it opened or the faster, banked track of the past four races, the speedway has been one of NASCAR's more predictable tracks outside of Martinsville.
In the last six Cup races in Las Vegas, the winning driver has paid out at odds of 7-1 or less -- not the big-bang return on investment NASCAR bettors are seeking. What they want is Trevor Bayne-Daytona 500 type of payouts at 50-1 or higher.
Again this year, it will be difficult to make a case for any driver not named Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon or Carl Edwards. All are listed at 10-1 or less.
But, heck, this is Las Vegas, so let's gamble a little:
■ Kevin Harvick (12-1): The first thing that stands out is how well Harvick raced on all 1.5-mile tracks last year. Of those 10 races, he was one of two drivers to finish in the top 11 at least eight times, including a runner-up finish in Las Vegas. Harvick is an attractive wager also because he brought his third-place chassis from last year's season finale at Homestead. Many of the teams are bringing new cars, and there is a sense of uncertainty until seeing them run for the first time. Unlike some of the others, we know Harvick's car is already stout.
■ Matt Kenseth (18-1): He finished 13th or better in nine of 10 races on 1.5-mile tracks in 2010, including runner-up finishes at Charlotte and Texas. He brought a new car this week, but after finishing fastest in Friday's practice and then winning the pole, there isn't much debate about whether he'll do well Sunday.
■ Greg Biffle (22-1): The overall resurgence of the Roush program began with Biffle at Indianapolis last year and carried throughout the season, in which he compiled two wins, just as Edwards did. Biffle's 12.9-average finish in Cup races in Las Vegas adds to a nice resume that includes victories here in the Nationwide and Truck series.
■ Clint Bowyer (25-1): Bowyer is bringing a race-proven chassis this week, one that finished second in the fall at Fontana and later took seventh at Texas.
■ Jamie McMurray (25-1): It would have been a slam dunk in betting on McMurray had he brought his winning chassis from the fall Charlotte race, a track perhaps most similar to Vegas, but he didn't. But the combination of an Earnhardt-Childress Racing engine under the hood -- like Harvick and Bowyer have -- and a knack for winning big races makes McMurray the ultimate wild card.
Incidentally, Kyle Busch and Johnson finished second and third, respectively, behind McMurray in that Charlotte race, and they brought those same cars.
A final note: A great tool to complete your betting strategy for Sunday is to closely follow today's final practice session. It's not necessarily about who has the fastest single lap time, but who can sustain high speeds over the duration of 10- or 20-lap runs.
In Sunday's Review-Journal, we'll have our weekly top-10 driver ratings that will be based partly on today's practice.

Playing The Odds: NASCAR Betting In Las Vegas

By Joe Menzer
NASCAR.com

Sports Books like the Las Vegas Hilton do lots with NASCAR wagers
Gentlemen, place your bets.

Well, before you do, someone else has to place your odds. With this Sunday's Kobalt Tools 400 to be run at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, did you ever wonder who sets all those odds everyone scrambles to bet on? Better yet, did you really have any idea how many different "proposition bets" you can legally lay down on NASCAR races every week in Vegas?

Three such gentlemen explained how they go about their business so visitors to Vegas for this weekend's Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup Series can go about their betting in sports books all over town.

Micah Roberts, who has spent 18 years setting odds on NASCAR events for the old Circus Circus, Station Casinos and now VegasInsiders.com, said it is a mostly a matter of studying some history and some numbers. Lots of numbers.

"Basically how [odds are] set is you set it up by tendencies, by how drivers have done in the past at particular track or a particular track style," Roberts said. "Like Las Vegas, for instance, we can go back maybe not the whole year at mile-and-a-half, high-banked tracks -- but we can go back to the end of last year's Charlotte race, Atlanta, Homestead and kind of mix in the most recent tracks and see how the drivers did.

"For instance, Kevin Harvick is not the favorite this week. But he was so good on all those tracks last year, even at the beginning of the year. Out of eight races total last year, including Chicago and Kansas, I think he finished in the top 11 in [eight of 10] of them. nobody else was close to him. Not even Jimmie, even though Jimmie won one of those races."

Viva Las Vegas! Kobalt Tools 400 Preview

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

Las Vegas embraces NASCAR weekend
Of all the group of visitors that come to Las Vegas annually, you’d be hard pressed to find one that can actually transform the city and make it be known that a big event is going on. There are usually so many different people in town who all have different agenda’s that a major event that brings people to town kind is absorbed and goes somewhat unnoticed unlike any other city.

A major concert, boxing or UFC match registers a blip on the scale other than the one propery where the event is held. When the PBR and NFR rodeos come to town, you see the Cowboy hats and Wranglers, but for most of the other guests visiting, they wouldn’t even know there was a rodeo in town because they blend in so well just like everyone else. Big conventions like Comdex and the Magic shows are only identified by casino employees just because the tokes are always down.

The thing that really makes NASCAR stand out is the colors and fun good natured time all their fans have. When over 100,000 people come in for a weekend, all decked out in their gear along the Las Vegas strip, it’s a pretty impressive sight. They take over Fremont street and the strip like a Mardi Gras event in New Orleans. There’s a vibe and energy to the city that is definitively their creation like no other time of the year.

Most of these fans have circled Las Vegas on their calendars as their destination spot for a vacation because they can kill two birds with one stone. Not only do they get to go to a race, but they also get to satisfy their family vacation needs like no other race can. “It’s Las Vegas! And they have NASCAR too!”

And the wife and kids don’t argue the choice as being selfish by Dad, either. It’s an all around win-win for everyone.

When the first Cup race came to town 14 years ago, it also signaled the birth of NASCAR wagering as we know it today with every sports book carrying the odds and some offering a multitude of driver propositions, almost like a Super Bowl. Prior to that, only a handful of books even took odds on the weekly races.

Over the years, the 100,000 visitors have all become well educated on how to bet and it adds another angle to making the race fun. You can’t bet the race in Daytona, legally anyway.

Sports Books offer a wide array of props for Vegas race
The Las Vegas Hilton Super Book, MGM Resort properties and Lucky’s sports books all figure to have the most extensive list of propositions this week. Beyond odds to win, they’ll have driver matchups and all types of other things found in a box-score like over-under cautions, winning car car number, lap leaders and allow you to pick more points combined in the race between teams like Hendrick Motorsports drivers against Roush Racing drivers.

The main staple with all the visitors, however, is odds to win. So let’s get down to business and see if we can find a winner out of the 43 drivers for the Kobalt 400.

The favorite is Jimmie Johnson at 9-to-2 and it’s easy to see why. He is a four time winner in Las Vegas, including last years race, and also is the most consistent in the series on similar tracks. In the ten races last season held on 1.5-mile tracks, Johnson finished third or better in six of them. The reigning five-time Cup Champion will be tough to beat this week in all propositions, but for many, it’s no fun taking the favorite at low odds.

The next choice is Carl Edwards at 5-to-1. After winning the final two races of the 2010 season, Edwards finished second at Daytona and then had some bad luck early in the Phoenix race. But the positive for Edwards is that his car for Phoenix was once again fast -- during practice and before the wreck -- and likely would have competed for the win. We saw a massive turnaround with the all the Roush drivers in the second half of last year and if they are the same team from then, then Las Vegas could be theirs once again.

Of the 13 races held in Las Vegas, a Roush driver has won six of them. Five were won under the old flatter configuration of the track with only Edwards winning on the new higher banked format in 2008.

Greg Biffle saw the same type of resurgence after Indianapolis last season and became a weekly force in the series, especially on these type of tracks. He won at Kansas in October, then had top-5 finishes at Charlotte and Texas. Biffle can be found at 12-to-1 or higher this week.

Kyle Busch (6/1) won the 2009 Vegas race in front of his hometown crowd, but didn’t win on any of the 1.5-mile tracks last season. However, he didn’t compete well in them with four top-5 finishes. He comes in this week as the points leader with brother Kurt Busch just behind him in the standings. The city is pretty excited about having their Vegas boys come home 1-2 in points. Last week at Phoenix, we saw two surprises. The first was Kyle being bullied on the last few laps and passed and the other was Jeff Gordon being the bully.

Led most laps in 2010 Vegas race
Gordon (10/1) has a new chief and sponsor and it paid off immediately in the second race of the year ending a 66 race winless streak. His first win since the 2009 Texas spring race gave him 83 wins for his career tying him with Cale Yarborough on the all-time list. Next up is 84 wins which would tie him with darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison.

Although Gordon hadn’t won in a while, he still had been competitive and finished third in Vegas last year, not to mention winning in 2001. In his last six Vegas races -- since NASCAR implemented the loop system -- Gordon tops the charts among all drivers with a 117.0 rating, an amazing figure when considering Johnson (116.4) has won four Vegas race over the same span.

The most consistent driver on the 1.5-mile tracks last season was Kevin Harvick (12/1) who finished within the top-11 in eight of the 10 races. He finished runner-up last year in Vegas and will be looking to be the first non-Hendrick Chevy to win in Las Vegas.

Denny Hamlin (8/1) won both races at Texas last season and should be well equipped to make a run this week on the same type of track. His teammate, Joey Logano (20/1) might also warrant some attention this week after finished 13th his rookie year and following that up with a sixth-place finish last season.

A nice wild card to look at is Jamie McMurray at 25-to-1 who won at Charlotte in the fall last year and finished runner-up in the Coca-Cola. He’s got the horsepower to compete and the odds are kind of juicy to take a shot.

Good luck this week and enjoy the city. This is your town for the weekend, take it over, let loose, have some fun, and most of all, thanks for visiting and be sure to mark that calendar again for 2012.

Top 5 Finish Prediction:
1) #29 Kevin Harvick (12/1)
2) #18 Kyle Busch (6/1)
3) #48 Jimmie Johnson (9/2)
4) #99 Carl Edwards (5/1)
5) #24 Jeff Gordon (10/1)

Daytona 500 Driver Ratings Following All Practice Sessions
