Edwards Looking For Redemption In Miami

Carl Edwards heads to Homestead-Miami Speedway attempting to win his first career Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship with redemption on his mind.

During the 2011 season, Edwards was denied the title in one of the most exciting season finales in NASCAR history. Edwards finished second in the race to Tony Stewart, but the duo ended the season tied in points. In a heart-breaking tiebreaker, Stewart won the championship after recording the most wins in the season of the two (Edwards had one to Stewart’s five).

On Monday night, NBCSN replayed the 2011 race – and while live-tweeting the event under the hashtag #NASCARthrowback, Stewart tweeted the following to fans hoping to see Edwards on the victorious side of history:

For those looking to take Smoke’s hint, log on to nascar.com/tickets.

And 2016 is a different story – points and tiebreakers don’t matter on Sunday. Edwards just needs to post the highest finish among the Championship 4 drivers to earn his first championship.

Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3

In October, NASCAR held an organizational NASCAR Sprint Cup Series test at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Among the drivers who took part in the organizational test? Carl Edwards.

Edwards was the only Championship 4 driver at the test, which could pay huge dividends. (Brad Keselowski represented Penske Racing while Chase Elliott tested for Hendrick Motorsports.)

When asked about testing at Homestead-Miami, Edwards was confident in his ability to race well at the 1.5-mile track.

“This is a neat opportunity for me. This place, especially in the sun, you drive in the corners and slide up by the fence. I really feel like I am driving a race car here. I was just telling my spotter it’s a really fun place to drive.”

Joe Gibbs Racing, Toyota Racing Get Chance To Repeat

If Carl Edwards wins his first career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway, it will be the second-consecutive title for Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota. JGR captured its fourth Sprint Cup Series crown last season with Kyle Busch, while Toyota captured its first driver championship.

It would mark the first time since 2010 that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has seen back-to-back team and manufacturer driver championships. Jimmie Johnson last accomplished the feat from 2006 – 2010 when he won his five consecutive championships for Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet.

Toyota is also on the verge of history. If the top finishing Toyota finishes 26th or better, it will clinch its first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series manufacturer’s championship.

No Ordinary Beginning

In his debut season as crew chief with Carl Edwards, Dave Rogers has the chance to win his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. This would be the second-consecutive season that a crew chief and driver have won the title in their freshman season together (Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch and Adam Stevens, 2015).

A Marshfield, Vermont, native, Rogers began his crew chief career working for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR XFINITY Series in 2006, where he won the 2008 NASCAR XFINITY Series owner title with the No. 20 team.

Rogers moved up to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2009 and worked as Kyle Busch’s crew chief until 2014, where he made the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup in four of five seasons. He then moved over to Denny Hamlin’s team in 2015, where the duo posted two wins and finished ninth in the Chase.

Atop the pit box, Rogers has 18 career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series wins, three of those with Edwards.

Heating Up At Homestead

For Carl Edwards, it’s home sweet Homestead.

In addition to leading the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in laps led at Homestead (568), he leads the Championship 4 drivers in wins at Homestead with two (2008 and 2010). Kyle Busch is the only other Championship 4 contender who has registered a win at Homestead (2015) – Jimmie Johnson and Joey Logano have never won at the 1.5-mile track.

He leads the Championship 4 drivers in driving rating at Homestead – owning a 109.4 driver rating in 12 starts. Additionally, Edwards is the only driver among the Championship 4 to ever register a perfect driver rating in a race at Homestead (2010).

He also leads the Championship 4 drivers in average finish (9.1 in 12 starts) in Miami.

Here are how the Championship 4 drivers’ average finishes at Homestead stack up against Edwards:

Joey Logano (17.7 in seven career starts)

Jimmie Johnson (14.1 in 15 career starts)

Kyle Busch (21.1 in 11 career starts)

If we’re going strictly by statistics at Homestead, advantage Edwards.

#CarlEdwards no more?

If you like social media, you should be rooting for Carl Edwards to win the 2016 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship this weekend at Homestead.

Why?

#CarlEdwards could be dropping the hashtag.

Edwards confessed in his media availability at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series organizational test at Homestead-Miami Speedway in October that he would join Twitter if he won the championship.

You can find the proof of that audio here.

From the Cockpit:
Carl Edwards:
“Alright, we had a really fun weekend at Watkins Glen. We had some really fast racecars. We got presented with a few challenges and we responded well. The team has a week off and there’s no better place to come back to than Bristol to get back in the swing of racing. We’ve had a number of wins there. Dave (Rogers) and I and our team’s first win of the season was there. We’re going back with what we think is a better plan, a better car, and hopefully we can go qualify well again and put the STANLEY Toyota in Victory Lane. Bristol is 500 laps of insanity with the groove being up by the fence. You’ve really got to plan your passes. You’ve got to work traffic. Hopefully we can start up front, stay up front and play the game the right way. We’ve been having a lot of fun. This race is one of the ones we look forward to as an opportunity to have a good time and win another trophy before the Chase starts.”

From the Pit Box:
Dave Rogers:
“We’re excited to return to the high banks of Bristol. We captured our first win of the season there and look forward to the opportunity to try to sweep the 2016 races at the famed short track and put STANLEY in Victory Lane.”.

Final Watkins Glen Driver Ratings: 2016 Cheez-It 355

Carl Edwards won the Watkins Glen pole Saturday; he's 8/1 to win Sunday.
LAS VEGAS -- Carl Edwards won the pole Saturday at Watkins Glen International and past track history suggests he's a strong contender to win Sunday's Cheez-It 355, the second and final race on a road course of the season. Edwards also won the pole at Sonoma Raceway's road course in June before settling for a fourth-place finish.

Edwards, listed at 8-to-1 odds to win, was already a strong contender just based on his own past history on the seven-turn, 2.45-mile road course where he's got an 8.4 average finish in 11 starts. His best finish was third-place in 2009, but his consistency has been incredible with eight top-10 finishes.

Track history shows that the pole winner has won nine times in 33 Sprint Cup races all-time, which comes out to 27.2 percent, the most proficient start position in the field. Las Vegan Kyle Busch was the last to do it in 2008.

Starting from the top-five has produced 21 of the 33 winners (63.6 percent), which makes those starting immediately behind Edwards worthy of a strong look at the bet window. Kyle Larson (30/1)starts second, Sonoma winner Tony Stewart (18/1) starts third, followed by Matt Kenseth (30/1) and race co-favorite Kyle Busch (6/1).

Among those, Busch is still the driver to beat and considered the favorite. He's a two-time winner at Watkins Glen with a 10.5 average finish and he practiced extremely well in both of Friday's 85-minute sessions with top-five speeds which included having the best 10-consecutive lap average.

Joe Gibbs Racing super-fast during first New Hampshire practice

Alex Bowman turned lots of laps in the No. 88 to get ready for Sunday.
Martin Truex Jr. was fastest in Friday’s Sprint Cup Series practice at New Hampshire Motor Speedway leading a strong showing by Joe Gibbs Racing who have failed to win any of the past six races after winning eight of the first 13..

Truex's fast lap at 133.562 mph came on the 17th of his 18 laps run while in qualifying trim. Carl Edwards was second fastest (133.380 mph), followed by Kyle Busch (133.100), Kurt Busch (133.091) and Denny Hamlin (132.956) to round out the top-five. Truex has never won at New Hampshire while Kyle and Hamlin have two wins and Kurt has three wins.

Edwards has never won at New Hampshire's flat 1-mile layout, but he should be in good shape Sunday considering he lost by 0.01 of a second at Phoenix and won at Richmond, two flat tracks that run similar. Among the three drivers that attempted 10-consecutive laps, Edwards had the best average.

Toyota drivers made up four of the top five fastest positions, with Kurt Busch’s Chevrolet the only non-Toyota car in that group. Joe Gibbs Racing equipment (Truex Jr included) counted for five of the top-10 fastest speeds with last fall's New Hampshire winner Matt Kenseth having the 10th fastest lap (132.462).

Alex Bowman is subbing for Dale Earnhardt Jr. this week because Earnhardt experienced concussion-like symptoms. Bowman put ina session high 38 laps run to get familiar with the car and seat and had the 13th fastest lap (132.172).

Next up is qualifying at 4:45 pm ET, televised live on NBCSN. Chances are JGR will be on the pole.

: “We are coming off of a great race at Sonoma and headed to Daytona in the SUBWAY Toyota Camry for an opportunity to go to Victory Lane. I don’t have a Cup win there so it would be nice to get one of those. We’ve been really close. We have a great Superspeedway program. This weekend we celebrate America’s independence. It’s always a fun weekend for the fans. We’ve got SUBWAY on board. They’ve been an amazing partner and done a ton for the USO. The SUBWAY Firecracker 250 is on Friday and I’ll be watching that and cheering for our Joe Gibbs Racing teammates. Andon Saturday we’re going to try to get a trophy.”

From the Pit Box:
Dave Rogers
: “There’s always an indescribable allure to racing at Daytona whether it’s in February or July. The Daytona 500 is “super-bowl” of our sport, but the 4th of July race is also of great significance. We have the opportunity to celebrate our country’s independence by doing what we love to do – racing automobiles at a fantastic sporting facility. SUBWAY has made this coming weekend even more special for us by teaming up with USO and supporting the troops that protect the freedoms we enjoy so much. Carl Edwards:
“Headed to Sonoma. It’s one of the most fun racetracks that we go to. It’s slick. It’s unlike anything I grew up racing on, so it’s a real challenge. It’s tough. It’s tough on the crews, on the drivers, and on the crew chiefs. Strategy is always a huge part of it. It’s fun. You get to drive the race car to its limits, left and right, through all the gears, heavy braking, over the curbs. It really is just a fun race because you’re driving the race car the entire time. I look forward to Sonoma each year. I get to hang out with John Lundgren and a bunch of the folks from Stanley/Black & Decker each year when we go out there, which is a lot of fun. Hopefully, we can get them to Victory Lane. My one win at Sonoma was really one of the highlights of my racing career and hopefully we can do it again.”

From the Pit Box:
Dave Rogers
: “As a crew chief, you always enjoy going to tracks that your driver likes. Sonoma is one that Carl has been talking about for a while. The racing surface is slick, grip is low and the difficulty is high – this is Carl’s type of track. This Stanley Toyota Camry team is looking forward to the challenges our first road course venue of the season presents. It should be an exciting race.”

Edwards fastest during first Pocono practice session

Carl Edwards looking for first Pocono Top-5 since 2010.
Carl Edwards ran just one lap during Friday's lone practice session at Pocono Raceway and it was all he needed to post the fastest speed (179.802 mph) in preparation for Sunday's Axalta 400. Edwards, a two-time winner on the 2.5-mile tricky triangle, will be looking to parlay that fast lap into a nice run during Friday's qualifying (4:15 pm ET).

The practice session was delayed by 20 minutes due to fog and then was cut short due to rain rain. Dryers are on the track, but qualifying could be cancelled which would set the starting lineup by the practice times (note: they did get qualifying in). The nine fastest laps all came from drivers who attempted just one lap. Three drivers ran a session-high seven laps and 11 drivers failed to turn a lap.

Tomorrow, there's just one 55-minute practice for the day (11:30 am ET). Normally, the teams get two Saturday sessions to get the car tuned perfectly for race day. There's a 50% chance of rain Saturday so they might not even be able to get that practice in. Get up front and stay up front is the key at Pocono, so starting up front is pivotal.

One more thing. There's a 100% chance of rain Sunday.

Top-5 Fastest Laps - Practice 1
1) Carl Edwards 179.802
2) Kevin Harvick 178.827
3) Kurt Busch 178.649

Kansas Speedway a home track for Carl Edwards

Carl Edwards is 8/1 to win at Kansas Speedway.

GoBowling.com 400 at Kansas Speedway

No. 19 STANLEY Toyota News and Notes:

KANSAS: Edwards and the No. 19 STANLEY team head to Edwards’ home track where he is excited about racing in front of the home crowd, his family and friends. Kansas Speedway is the track where Edwards performed one of his most memorable racing moves in 2008. As the final laps counted down, a two man shoot-out would shape up between Edwards and Jimmie Johnson. Edwards made one final attempt to pass Johnson to get the win on his home track, but he would slap the wall in turn four, slowing him enough to allow Johnson to take the checkered flag.

EDWARDS BY THE NUMBERS: In 17 Sprint Cup Series starts at Kansas, Edwards has completed 4,459 of 4,489 laps (99.3 percent) and has led for a total of 115 laps. Edwards has earned six top-five and 12 top-10 finishes there. His average start is 14.0 and his average finish is 10.6. He has a Camping World Truck Series win there in 2004.

RACE INFO: GoBowling.com 400 at Kansas Speedway (1.5-mile) begins at 6:30 p.m.CT on Saturday, May 7th. The race will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 1, Sirius XM Channel 90 and MRN Radio.

Carl Edwards
: “Alright, we’re headed to Kansas. We’ve got STANLEY on the car. We’ve got a couple neat weeks with STANLEY coming up with the Children’s Miracle Network and everything STANLEY does for them. They’re donating a bunch of money to the cause and the opportunity for someone to win a million dollars at Dover. This will be a good couple of weeks. There’s no track on the schedule at which I’d like to win more than Kansas! Kansas is really special to me. It’s a track I’ve always dreamed of racing on. I’ve got one victory there in the truck series. It was probably one of the neatest moments of my career. I really feel that after our strong run at Texas we’ve got a good shot here at this mile and a half. It’s a fast track. It’s a night race. The cars will have tons of grip. We’ve got a lot of folks coming that’ll be in the grandstands and the garage that were a big part of my career. Hopefully we can go there and represent very well and have a really good time. It’s a fast place and it’ll require us to qualify well, race well, and it’ll only get faster through the night. I’m really looking forward to it!”

From the Pit Box:
Dave Rogers
: Our 19 team is looking forward to racing at Kansas. We know Carl is proud of his mid-west roots and is looking forward to performing in front of his hometown fans. Kansas is the perfect place to regain momentum after the speedbump we call Talladega.

Carl Edwards still searching for first Martinsville Grandfather clock

Carl Edwards is 18/1 to win his first career race at Martinsville.
Carl Edwards / No. 19 ARRIS Toyota Preview
STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway

No. 19 ARRIS Toyota News and Notes:

Martinsville Speedway is the smallest track on the NASCAR circuit nestled in the mountains of southern Virginia with a lot of history. Statistically it has been a tough track for Edwards, but he’s been continually getting better on the paperclip oval. With Dave Rogers at the helm, ARRIS on board and the support of his JGR teammates, he expects to keep improving and be in the hunt for their unique Grandfather Clock trophy.
In 23 Sprint Cup Series starts at Martinsville, Edwards has completed 11,351 of 11,534 laps (98.4 percent) and has led for a total of 44 laps. Edwards has earned one top-five and five top-10 finishes there. His average start is 16.3 and his average finish is 15.9.
RACE INFO: The STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway (.526-mile) begins at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 3rd. The race will be broadcast live on FOX, Sirius XM Channel 90 and MRN Radio.

From the Cockpit:
Carl Edwards:
“Alright, Dave Rogers and this No. 19 crew like a challenge. Getting me to victory lane at Martinsville is going to be a good one. I have struggled there, but I truly have no reason not to run well at this race. It’s because I’ve got great cars and great teammates. Denny Hamlin’s help last year really stepped up my performance there. I’m excited to go to Martinsville. I’m as excited to go to Martinsville as I ever have been. It’s a really tough race track. Like Dave Rogers said it’s a real challenge and anybody who wins there, they earn it. To me with an average finish of about 16th, it’s obviously been a tough place for me. We ran really well in the spring last year. That was really a turning point for me. We learned a lot and hopefully we can build on that. We’ve been having some great runs. We’ve been performing really well, leading laps, we’ve had fast cars in qualifying and we feel like we have a really good plan. If I could choose which car I wanted to be in and which team I wanted to be on, it would be this No. 19 ARRIS team with Dave Rogers and the fastest crew on pit road going to Martinsville. I’ve got a good feeling about it and I’m ready to go race.”

From the Pit Box:
Dave Rogers
: “Martinsville is one of my favorite race tracks on the circuit. The tight corners and lack of bank angle put a premium on mechanical grip. Likewise, it opens the door for the drivers to manipulate balance conditions by changing driving style. This combination always provides exciting racing and guarantees that whichever team wins Martinsville will have earned it. Our No.19 ARRIS team is looking forward to the challenge.”

Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

No. 19 ARRIS Toyota News and Notes:
Edwards and the No. 19 ARRIS team head out to Las Vegas this weekend for the first of three consecutive races out west. The ARRIS team will test the new aero package on Thursday. This will be a great opportunity to tweak on what they learned from Atlanta and apply it to the slicker surface with fast speeds there. The goal is victory lane.

Edwards has won two Sprint Cup Series races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2008 and 2011 and has finished fifth the past three years at the 1.5-mile track.

EDWARDS’ VEGAS STATS: In 11 Sprint Cup Series starts at Las Vegas, Edwards has completed 2,918 of 2,958 laps (98.6 percent) and has led for a total of 163 laps. Edwards has earned two wins, five top-five and six top-10 finishes there. His average start is 13.5 and his average finish is 12.5.

From the Cockpit:
Carl Edwards:
“We have had two solid runs to start the season and we head to Vegas with the new downforce package which was a lot of fun in Atlanta. We get to work on a bunch of things in the test sessions. It is always fun to go to Vegas. A lot of fans travel out there from all over, it’s a fun venue and it’s a great race track. We have ARRIS on board, we have a lot of fun with them so far this year and want to get a win and lock ourselves into the Chase. I think this will be the real test to this new package with the newer pavement and higher speeds and hopefully it’s a success.”

From the Pit Box:
Dave Rogers:
“I’m looking forward to having some test time in Vegas. We left Atlanta a little short of our goal, but the ARRIS team battled hard for another top five finish and learned a lot along the way. I’m excited to go to Vegas and build on that.”

Edwards and new crew chief kick off relationship in Sprint Unlimited

Carl Edwards is 15/1 to win Sprint Unlimited.
Carl Edwards / No. 19 ARRIS Toyota Preview

Sprint Unlimited at Daytona International Speedway

No. 19 ARRIS Toyota News and Notes:

Edwards heads to Daytona for his second full season at Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR). He will be teaming up with his new crew chief Dave Rogers and running the Sprint Unlimited will be their first time on the track together. The No. 19 team has high expectations for Daytona and 2016. Edwards is still looking for his first career Sprint Cup Superspeedway win and hopes the change to Rogers will produce it.

This is the second year that the starting line-up for the Sprint Unlimited will be determined by a random draw. The race will consist of 75 total laps and will be broken down into two segments with the competition caution coming out after lap 25. A total of 25 drivers are eligible for this year’s event.

In nine Sprint Cup Series starts at the Sprint Unlimited, Edwards has completed 588 of 678 laps and has led for a total of 84 laps. Edwards has earned two top-10 finishes and has started from the pole twice in 2010 and 2013 at the prestigious Florida track. He won the Camping World Truck Series race there in 2004.

The Sprint Unlimited at Daytona International Speedway (2.5-mile Tri-Oval) begins at 8:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, February 13th. The race will be broadcast live on FOX, Sirius XM Channel 90 and MRN Radio.

From the Cockpit:
Carl Edwards:
Alright, we’re headed back to Daytona. The 2016 year looks to be really exciting with coming off a championship season at Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR). I’ve gotten a chance to get to know Dave Rogers over the off-season. I’m really excited to go racing with him and my new A-team. The Sprint Unlimited is really a great way to start the season. We get to shake the cobwebs off and go have a good time. We’ve got AARIS on the car and we’d love to get them to Victory Lane. I’ve never been to Victory Lane in the Cup Series at Daytona, so it would be really exciting for me. I’m ready to go racing. It’s my second year at JGR. We had a great first year and I’m excited to build on it. Basically, it’s just a fun race this weekend and a good time. It’ll be a blast!”

From the Pit Box:
Dave Rogers
: “I’ve enjoyed the time over the off-season to get to know Carl and I’m extremely encouraged by the quick bond we’ve developed, but it’s time to go racing. Although this will be Carl’s 10th Sprint Unlimited race, it’s my first opportunity to serve as a leader for him and this ARRIS Toyota team at the race track. I’m so excited – it almost feels like my rookie year again. I can’t wait to get this season started with the Sprint Unlimited at Daytona.”

Note: Great handicapping tool for this race is to refer to the four races run earlier this season at Phoenix, Richmond and New Hampshire. All three tracks are flat and almost the same size which require similar set-ups. If good on one track, a driver should be good on the others.

“We are ; it’s pure driving, left, right, using all the gears, managing the tires, and pit strategy comes in to play. This is a tough race and it’s also one of the most physically demanding races. It’s mentally-tasking. For all those reasons it was a blast to win there last year. Hopefully, we can come out there and defend our race win from last year which was really one of the coolest wins I have ever had. We come out there and represent Stanley, which has been a great partner and I have had a lot of fun with them. Marcos Ambrose always did a great job for them on the road courses, so hopefully I can keep that going. Like I said, it’s a fun race track and we’ve already got a win this season. Our mission is to go out there and just have a good time. Our guys have put a lot of work into our road course program and I am excited to see what it’s like driving a Toyota out there.”

From the Cockpit:
Carl Edwards:
“Auto Club Speedway is a blast to drive. The surface lets you slide around. The way the Goodyear tires fall off there makes it a really competitive and a fun race. You can race three or four wide. I’ve had a lot of success there as a driver. The track is fun. For me it’s a special race this year because it’s TRD and Toyota’s home track. The JGR Camry’s have had a lot of success there, so for me it’s an exciting place to go. We have Subway on our Camry for their first race and I get to go and learn about Toyota and TRD, spend some time at their headquarters and get to know the people that help make our race cars go fast and build our engines. It’s just a really fun race. It’ll be an opportunity for us to go out and get a really solid finish, and hopefully compete for the win. We came off a tough race at Phoenix but I was really proud of my guys for staying in the fight and doing a great job on pit road. Darian is making great calls on the pit box. It’s going to be a fun race and I’m looking forward to it.”

From the Pit Box:
Darian Grubb:
“We’re going to Auto Club Speedway with Subway on our Toyota for their first race of the year. Carl has had success there in the past and we will work off of that. The track is fun for drivers with the surface being worn out and drivers can literally run from the white line all the way up to the wall. It’s a big and wide 2-mile track that’s also fast. You need a lot of horsepower because the straightaways are long, and that place is tough on motors, but I think that it’s always an exciting race.”

Carl Edwards to drive for Joe Gibbs Racing beginning 2015

Carl Edwards won at Bristol for third time in March
What's long been rumored is now official. Carl Edwards will drive for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2015.

The organization is making the move to a fourth car in 2015 and Edwards will drive the No. 19 Toyota alongside Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth.

Edwards will be sponsored by Arris for 17 races in 2015. Not familiar with Arris? It's a telecommunications equipment manufacturing company. No sponsor for the other races was announced on Tuesday but Joe Gibbs said that most of the remaining races were accounted for.

"It will be nice to be able to talk about this now with all the work that's gone into it," Edwards said.

"Obviously a huge day for me and my career and I'm looking forward to next year. We're competitors for the rest of this season and I'm going to try to make it as tough on [Joe Gibbs Racing] as I can for the rest of the year. But starting next year it will be really exciting to race for championships with [Joe Gibbs Racing.]"

Carl Edwards using winning Sonoma chassis at The Glen

Edwards is 25/1 to win at The Glen
Carl Edwards – CHEEZ-IT 335 AT THE GLEN ADVANCE

Team: No. 99 Cheez-It Ford Fusion
Crew Chief: Jimmy Fennig
Primary Chassis: RK-917
Backup Chassis: RK-853
Twitter: @RandyPR99

ADVANCE NOTES

Pocono Recap
Carl Edwards battled back from an incident in qualifying, to move his No. 99 Fastenal Ford inside the top 10 in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway. However his Ford sustained substantial damage as he attempted to avoid a massive 13-car wreck on lap 117 of the 160-lap event. The No. 99 team had to take the car to the garage for extensive repairs, with Edwards returning to finish the race 29th; three laps down.
Edwards at the Glen
* Edwards has won a Nationwide Series race there in 2012 bringing his career total to 38 wins in the series.
* Edwards won his first Sprint Cup pole at the Glen in 2010 and has 4 Top-5’s. His average finish is 8.8 out of nine starts.
The Car
* Primary chassis RK-917 was last run in 2014 at Sonoma, starting in the 4th spot and winning the race.
* Backup chassis RK-853 was last brought to Sonoma in 2014 as the back-up car.

Edwards on Watkins Glen:
“This is a race that I’ve been looking forward to all year. I love road racing and coming off the win at Sonoma we feel like this is a great opportunity for our team to go get some bonus points and have a little more fun before the Chase starts. It’s a huge weekend for our 99 team driving the Cheez-It Ford with Kellogg’s Cheez-It being the title sponsor of the race. There’s tons of folks there from Kellogg’s and I get to go sign autographs this weekend at Watkins Glen for the fans. Marcos Ambrose and Aric Almirola tested up there. Hopefully they can help us like they did at Sonoma. The Nationwide win at the Glen was huge for me a couple years ago and we’ve been real close there in the Cup Series. I’m just excited to go. It’s a fun race track. The fans are great. It’s a cool area of the country to visit. At the end of the day, if we could get to Victory Lane with the Cheez-It Ford it would be really, really cool to turn all this effort into winning this race for Kellogg’s.”
