Best Las Vegas NASCAR Prop Bets: 2017 Kobalt 400

Keselowski and Penske crew have new low downforce package figured out.
The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series roars through Las Vegas for Sunday's Kobalt 400 in what again will be the largest-wagered race of the season.

Just for perspective, the No. 2 race according to wagering handle is the Daytona 500 — about four times less than the Vegas race — and way down the list is the Indianapolis 500.

It's easy to create such a huge handle with up to 100,000 fans visiting the city and it being the only stop on the NASCAR circuit where wagering is legally available. With so many fans in town, the sports books are able to boost the betting menus by offering every type of wager possible that's found in a box score.

Brad Keselowski rolls in as the hot driver. He won last week at Atlanta, and he won last year in Vegas. Kevin Harvick (5-1 odds) and Keselowski (6-1) are the favorites this week.

Las Vegas’ Kyle Busch (7-1) will be a popular bet, with Daytona winner Kurt Busch (25-1) starting as a long shot.

Here’s a look at some props offered by William Hill sports books:

Manufacturer to win: Ford plus-160, Chevy plus-180, Toyota plus-200
Ford won the first three races at Las Vegas and has won a track-record nine times, including three of the past five. But the big reason to support Ford here, despite having only 14 cars compared to 16 for Chevy, is because the two most dominant cars in last week’s Atlanta race were Fords driven by Harvick, the 2015 Vegas winner, and two-time Vegas winner Keselowski.

Set-up requirements are similar for sister tracks Atlanta and Vegas (both 1.5-mile layouts). Also, Joey Logano has the best Las Vegas average finish (10.7) among all drivers and was runner-up last season. Kurt Busch is still looking for his first home track win, and he might offer the best long-shot odds to win.

Las Vegas sports books post dozens of props for Kobalt 400

Kevin Harvick rolled to his first Las Vegas win last season.
LAS VEGAS --It's a scalpers paradise in Las Vegas as the top two NASCAR bookmakers in the state — William Hill and the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook — have put up at least eight propositions for Sunday's Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway where bettors can set themselves up for a nice middle with little risk. The longer you wait, the less opportunity there is to middle the props as they'll all merge closer together once a few limit bets are made.

Las Vegas sports books only offer props like these for NASCAR races twice a year — Daytona 500 also — just because the betting volume is so large compared to the other 34 races. More action means the books can expect less one-way action and decrease their risk on a particular prop. It's the same reason you don't see 350 props in NFL Week 2 like you do in the Super Bowl; that, and also the lengthy time it takes to set them up, and study to post a proper number.

MORE: NASCAR at Las Vegas driver betting breakdown | Odds to win the pole

Here's a look at both sets of numbers (each uses 20 cent splits) which opened Tuesday:

NASCAR at Las Vegas prop bets

OV/UN FINISH POSITIONS         WILLIAM HILL   WESTGATE
KEVIN HARVICK                               5.5 (-110)       5.5 (ov -120)
He's had 15 top-five finishes in his last 25 races on intermediate tracks, including 2015 Vegas win. Finished sixth last week at Atlanta despite leading race-high 131 laps.

JIMMIE JOHNSON                           5.5 (ov -120)    6.5 (-110)
He's gone under 6.5 in eight of his 14 LVMS starts, but under 5.5 only five times. He's also won a track-record four times; comes off Atlanta win and tested well at LVMS in January.

Westgate goes full throttle with Super Bowl-type props for Kobalt 400

Westgate has OVER-UNDER cautions set at 6.5 for Kobalt 400
The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook may not have posted 350 props for the Kobalt 400 like it did for the Super Bowl, but there are more props available for Sunday's race than we'll see for any other NASCAR event in 2015.

The reason is simple: Las Vegas has a captive audience of over 100,000 people in town for the race. More racing fans means more volume; more props mean more ways for the book to ensure a profit for the weekend, the same strategy employed for the Super Bowl.

If the Westgate has to pay out lots of Jeff Gordon-to-win bets at 7-to-1 odds, the book's back-up plan -- props -- will help negate the loss. In the Super Bowl, many bettors cashed on 13-to-5 Patriots-to-OVER parlays, and if parlays were the only betting option, Las Vegas books would have shown a hefty loss. But between the Super Bowl props and futures, the books showed a $3.3 million profit.

The volume wagered on Las Vegas' NASCAR Sprint Cup race will be only a fraction of what was written for the Super Bowl ($116 million), but the same bookmaking concept applies.

Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook posts dozens of 2015 Daytona 500 props

Anything can happen in restrictor-plate races and usually does
LAS VEGAS - When I saw the 44 Daytona 500 props posted at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook on Wednesday morning, it was like being a kid on Christmas. While NASCAR last raced in November, it seems like forever ago. The props were a 'welcome back' happiness to the handicapping process I go through each week during NASCAR season.

Handicapping a NASCAR race involves flowing with the changes. Each Sunday night the week before an upcoming race, I start to break down every driver's tendency at a particular track. Then, there is consideration for current form and recent performances on similar tracks. By the time Tuesday and Wednesday roll around, the information gained via press releases, such as chassis selections, is used to enhance or downgrade a driver rating for the upcoming race. When Friday arrives, we get to see the qualifying times, but the most important and final ingredient for a driver's rating is how he or she fares on longer runs in Saturday's final practice.

I've undertaken this process every week for more than two decades, first when creating odds for the sports books I worked at, and now as I'm making wagers on the other side of the counter.

But much of this process is thrown out the window when analyzing the four restrictor-plate races each season between Daytona and Talladega. Anyone can win a plate race, anyone can get caught up in a wreck and practices mean very little. Ratings are more meaningful at tracks like Richmond or Kansas, so a diligent handicapper's chances are better when wagering on races at tracks such as these. Plate races are volatile crap shoots, and the cream doesn't always rise to the top.

Sprint Unlimited odds: Dale Earnhardt Jr. shares co-favorite status

The best advice for wagering on the Daytona 500 is to drop your normal bankroll to about half of what you invest in a non-plate race. Then, use about 60 percent of that amount on odds to win with five or six drivers, with heavier bets on those with shorter odds. At the other tracks, that ratio should shift dramatically to only 25 percent of your bankroll on odds to win, with the other 75 percent on driver matchups.

But the Daytona 500 is the Super Bowl of NASCAR, so there's nothing wrong with getting a little excited about all these wonderful props and overspending a bit. So, let's take a look at all of them, and I'll share advice where I have it. Also, remember before wagering, there are a couple key components not factored into these props -- i.e., how the cars run during Saturday's Sprint Unlimited and next Thursday's Budweiser Duel races. It's probably the second-most important component of a Daytona 500 driver rating, after recent plate race history.

DAYTONA 500 MATCHUPS, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2015

DALE EARNHARDT JR -120
KEVIN HARVICK +100
The Linemakers' lean: Let's go with Junior here, as Harvick wasn't so spectacular in plate races last season. In addition, Junior is statistically the most consistent driver at Daytona.

DALE EARNHARDT JR -120
BRAD KESELOWSKI +100
No lean: Keselowski is a good candidate to win, so no thanks here against another top candidate.

KEVIN HARVICK -110
BRAD KESELOWSKI -110
The Linemakers' lean: Keselowski has yet to win at Daytona, but he's proven his worth at Talladega with three wins. He had a career-best third-place finish at the 2014 Daytona 500

Daytona 500 Prop Betting: Focus on The Gibbs Cars

Kenseth in the focal point among Gibbs drivers
By Micah Roberts
The Linemakers on Sporting News

LAS VEGAS -- The best strategy when betting Daytona 500 props is to go about your business the same way you would for Super Bowl props.

For the Super Bowl, the best way to roll successfully is by having a lean on the game and good reasons why. Your prop bet strategy should stem from your lean.

For the Ravens to be successful, chances were that Joe Flacco would have to perform well, and the offshoot of that thought was that his receiving corps would be beneficiaries of good statistical days. The sports books offered plenty propositions that allowed bettors to follow that plan and bet accordingly.

The same methodology applies to betting Daytona 500 props.

The first thing to do is identify who is likely to have the best car. In this case, I like the Joe Gibbs cars of Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch and will look to wager on them in a few props including matchups, manufacturer to win, winning car number and over-under finish positions. The Gibbs cars have stood out since the Daytona preseason test session in January and nothing has changed since to make me think otherwise.

Between the new Gen-6 car and the volatile nature of Daytona, I wouldn’t advise betting the normal unit play. Stay cautious, just like the drivers will be on Sunday. The logic and thinking that go into finding a driver to win, which is usually based on past performances and practices, don’t hold up as well at Daytona as they might for races at, say, Phoenix or Las Vegas. All it takes is for one driver to slip up and take 15 other innocent drivers with him or her.

LVH Super Book Posts Wide Assortment of Daytona 500 Props

Kevin Harvick and Tony Sewart are featured in several props (Getty)

LAS VEGAS -- The LVH SuperBook on Monday posted several driver matchups and propositions for the Daytona 500, including an OVER-UNDER total on cautions (9.5), winning car number (1-23 is the -135 favorite) or which manufacturer will win the race (Chevy is a favored +105 in a three-way prop).

Of course, the LVH has a few Danica Patrick props to fit the demand. She’s even-money against her boyfriend, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (-120) in a driver vs. driver matchup, and the OVER-UNDER on her Daytona 500 finish position is 22.5.

It’s not quite the level of intrigue of Super Bowl props, but Daytona 500 props find their special way into the hearts of several fans, whether they're Las Vegas locals or visitors.
