Kyle Busch, Kenseth and Johnson 6-to-1 co-favorites to win 2013 Coca-Cola 600
![]() |
| Kyle Busch won at Charlotte's sister-track at Texas in April |
Remember, though, that the All-Star race was a 90-lap series of sprints – and, of course, a non-points race.
The two other co-favorites, Gibbs drivers Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth, have gobbled up all the points-race wins on 1.5-mile tracks this season.
Johnson has six career wins at Charlotte, but he's no longer the dominant force at this track he once was. His success has been better in the fall race, but his last top-10 finish in the Memorial Day weekend race was in 2007. He'll be using a brand new chassis this week and attempting to do what he did in 2003: sweep the All-Star race and Coca-Cola 600 in back-to-back weeks.
Busch has never won at Charlotte, but he's been very close. He's finished in the top five in eight of his last 11 starts there, including his last three. Kenseth won at Charlotte in the fall of 2011 and also won his first career race in the 2000 Coca-Cola 600 as a rookie. Busch – who won at Texas, Charlotte's sister track and the one runs the most similar – appears to have somewhat of an edge this week.
Kasey Kahne is a strong candidate to upset the favorites. He won this race last season and has three other Charlotte wins over his career. He also finished second to Kenseth at the 1.5-mile tracks at Las Vegas and Kansas.
Another driver to look at this week is Greg Biffle. He's never won at Charlotte, but did finish fourth in both races last season. Biffle will be using his chassis from Texas, site of his only top five finish of the season.

NASCAR Odds: Kyle Busch 9-to-2 favorite to win at Richmond, Hamlin is 6-to-1
![]() |
| LVH giving Hamlin ultimate sign of respect at 6/1 when he might not race |
Hamlin possibly coming back brings a little more value to the rest of the favorites. Kyle Busch has won the past four Richmond spring races and is posted at 9-2 (+450). Those odds are very fair considering how dominating he’s been -- both this season and at Richmond in his career. In 16 starts, Busch has a 5.4 average finish at Richmond, the best among all active drivers.
If Hamlin doesn’t participate, the chances of Busch winning Saturday become greater and, therefore, Busch might be closer to 7-2 (+350).
The main question with Hamlin, if he does start, is how good he’ll be behind the wheel with back pain. Richmond is a tough three-quarter-mile track with not much banking, which means there will be all kinds of bumping and banging going on. You also have the possibility of Hamlin running the first few laps and then switching with Vickers on the first pit stop. Getting 6-1 on Hamlin doesn’t seem too attractive with the thought of Vickers closing the race out.
By the way, for betting purposes, the driver who starts the race is the driver of record. If you bet the “field” at 25-1 -- which Vickers is part of -- under the scenario of Hamlin starting and Vickers taking over mid-race, the winner of the bet would be Hamlin, and not Vickers or the field.
Another driver who had his odds raised generously because of Hamlin’s possible return is Jimmie Johnson, who is listed at 8-1. Johnson is a three-time Richmond winner, but what makes him most attractive this week is his performance at Phoenix, where he finished second.

Busch and Johnson 5-to-1 co-favorites to win Food City 500 at Bristol
![]() |
| Brad Keselowski is 7-to-1 to win at Bristol Sunday |
LAS VEGAS -- The LVH SuperBook has installed Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch as 5-to-1 co-favorites to win Sunday’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, the world’s fastest half-mile track.
It may seem odd that Johnson has been given co-favorite status at Bristol with Busch, since Busch has five career wins at the track to Johnson’s one, but it’s more a matter of the Gen-6 car and Johnson being fast on three vastly different tracks this season. There’s no reason to suggest Johnson won’t be just as good this week.
Johnson’s lone win at Bristol came in spring of 2010, but he experienced his share of the track's wrath during the first half of his career. Johnson, however, has been one of the best there since 2009. He’s finished ninth or better in seven of his last eight Bristol starts. In his last four runs, Johnson has finished third, fourth, ninth and second.
Busch fits into that legendary Bristol category of drivers gobbling up wins in bunches over short periods of time. We’ve seen greats of the past like David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip and Rusty Wallace pileup Bristol victories during their reigns. Recently, we saw Kurt Busch win five Bristol races over a nine race stretch, and then Kyle Busch do the same. In each case, regardless of the track layout, it took a certain type of attitude to dominate this track over stretches.

Johnson Now Clear Cut Favorite to Win NASCAR Chase
![]() |
| Johnson is an absolute machine, a one of a kind ( Getty) |
No matter how much we search for an angle to show that Jimmie Johnson won’t win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship, the math never adds up. We can try sell ourselves that 2+2 equals 5, but in the end, we'll be wrong, and that's the way its been with Johnson. Rather than just say Johnson is clearly the favorite, we look to find some semblance of hope that maybe someone can step up and show some consistency to match his high level of competition, but in five of the past six years, that search has been a futile one, just as it is this season.
When Johnson won at Martinsville on Sunday, he also grabbed the points lead from Brad Keselowski, who had been temporarily keeping the throne warm for Johnson for the first six weeks of the Chase. There still are three races remaining before we can actually call Johnson the 2012 champion, but it’s what has made Johnson champ in those other five seasons that makes it hard to believe his short 2-point lead won’t hold up.
Fans from every sport seem to dislike consistent dominance, but it’s different in NASCAR. In baseball, we all bang on the Yankees because they are always so good, but Johnson doesn’t have the massive army of supporters the Yankees do.

Final 2012 Pennsylvania 400 Driver Ratings at Pocono
Micah Roberts’ Top 10 Driver Ratings
Pennsylvania 400

Sunday, August 5, 2012 - 10:16 am (PDT)
Rating Driver Odds Practice 1 Practice 2 Qualified Brickyard*
1. Jimmie Johnson 7/1 1st 10th 10th 1st
Swept 2004 season; track best 8.8 average finish in 21 starts; chassis has recorded two wins.
2. Kyle Busch 12/1 2nd 4th 20th 2nd
Career best runner-up last fall; looked to have the best car overall in Friday’s practices.
3. Denny Hamlin 5/1 28th 15th 2nd 6th
Four-time winner, last coming in spring of 2010; starting on front row a huge early advantage.
4. Greg Biffle 12/1 5th 3rd 12th 3rd
2010 winner; great practices coming off strong Indy run; using chassis last run at Kentucky.
5. Mark Martin 18/1 9th 11th 18th 11th
NASCAR record seven-time runner-up without a win; using runner-up Pocono chassis from June.
6. Dale Earnhardt Jr. 8/1 8th 1st 8th 4th
Five top-5 finishes in 25 starts, three straight top-10’s; using eighth-place Pocono chassis.
7. Kasey Kahne 10/1 6th 25th 4th 12th
2008 winner; good practices and start position; using winning Coca-Cola 600 chassis from Charlotte.
8. Matt Kenseth 12/1 4th 2nd 7th 35th
Career best of third-place in 2003; 13.9 average finish; using seventh-place Pocono chassis.
9. Brad Keselowski 20/1 14th 16th 31st 9th
Won this race last season with broken ankle; using runner-up chassis from All-Star race.
10. Joey Logano 30/1 7th 29th 14th 33rd
Captured win in June, using same car this week; changed transmission following practice 1.
* Results from last weeks Brickyard 400. Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2.5 mile layout with long straightaways and flat turns requires a similar set-up at Pocono.

Betting Notes
From everything I saw in practice, Kyle Busch looks to have the best car. The only thing that keeps him from the top rating slot is that Jimmie Johnson is far too consistent -- unless at a restrictor-plate track -- and he also comes off a dominating Brickyard win. It’s very convenient for the No. 48 team to just roll off the hauler and be strong because they did it at a very similar track last week.
Kyle Busch, on the other hand, has had so many lost opportunities this season because of a multitude of errors that have riddled the team. It was just last June at Pocono when Busch started the race in the second-row and had good clean air with plenty of room to maneuver. He should have been in a great position to contend for the win, but on lap 76 of a scheduled 160 laps, the engine blew on the No. 18. End of day. Thanks for coming. Good luck next time.
That was the second week in a row Busch’s engine blew. His runner-up finish last week was his first top-5 since late May when he finished third in the Coca-Cola 600. It’s been a long time since Busch had something to smile about, but it looks as though they’ve gotten something figured out. The momentum from last week is huge and it's why I like Busch the most.
Carl Edwards ran just as well as his Roush teammates, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth, but he’s on a worse top-5 drought than Busch was. It’s been since Fontana in March that Edwards finished in the top-5. He picked up fifth-places at Las Vegas and Fontana, and hasn’t been seen there again. It just seems he’s more probable to finish 14th than crack the top-10.
Having Edwards being in the role as kamikaze pilot as he desperately tries to hunt down a win to make the Chase with only six chances remaining, he makes it very easy to bet against in driver matchups. The toughest thing about betting against Edwards in matchups is that you know he’ll bring the car back in one piece and finish with solid results despite not contending for a win. He should at least be entertaining on the track being overly aggressive.
Denny Hamlin will tough to beat since he’s starting up front and will be getting all that clean air. He may be in or near the lead for the first two pit stops, but I do think a handful of cars are better. We’ve kind of given Hamlin this mystique regarding Pocono because he’s won there four times, but really, it’s been four races and two years since his last win.
In all those races Hamlin won, he was one of the best in practice. This week, he is not. He just gets the respect because of his past and also good runs at Pocono and Indy this year. If it was based on practice alone, Hamlin would be rated far lower than third.
Two drivers that present a good opportunity this week and large adjusted odds are Joey Logano and Martin, the drivers that finished 1-2 in the June race. They didn't fare well in practice, but I think they got enough notes from the testing and practices from June as well as last week at Indy. I have more reason to believe they're closer to being similar to what they were in June as opposed to what they showed in Friday's practice.
