Who can beat Kevin Harvick this week at Phoenix? |
Odds this low had been reserved Jeff Gordon on road courses from 1998-2001, or Lewis Hamilton in Formula 1. They’re just not seen in today’s era of NASCAR, when there are more competitive cars than ever before. But numbers don’t lie, and seven wins in 25 starts at one facility is some pretty serious stuff. Four straight is insane.
Think about the obstacles Harvick had to overcome to win four straight races at one track–a span covering three seasons–including a do-or-die last fall. Handling different race set-ups and rules packages while racing for two different organizations, Harvick loves this track, or at least he knows it better than anyone. The Bakersfield, Calif. native has been racing on it at all stages of his career.
Since NASCAR began keeping its Loop data in 2005, there have been only four perfect 150.0 driver ratings recorded at 21 races at Phoenix: Kurt Busch in 2005 (his lone Phoenix win), and Harvick in the other three (Nov. 2006, Nov. 2014, Mar. 2015). It’s almost not fair to the rest of the field that the turn race into the Championship 4 is at Phoenix.
While 9-to-4 odds don’t have that 'come bet me 'look, it’s been bad strategy to bet against Harvick at Phoenix. Everyone knows he’s probably going to win, but we’ll all try to justify taking someone else at sexier odds with a bigger payoff.
So let’s do our best to make a case for a few drivers to conquer ‘Harvick the Great’ at Phoenix:
