A.J. Allmendinger is one of the favorites to win this week. |
We don't talk about Allmendinger often, but when it comes to road racing, he becomes part of any conversation. There's not much he can do about the performance of his car on ovals, but on roads, he can mask the team’s deficiencies by bringing his excellent skills into the mix.
Allmendinger’s first career Cup win came at Watkins Glen last season, and with it, he earned an automatic ticket into his first Chase. In the June Sonoma race, Allmendinger sat on the pole. A big portion of Allmendinger's success has been at Watkins Glen, a much faster course than Sonoma. In six Watkins Glen starts, he's got a series-best 7.8 average finish and has never finished worse than 13th.
Allmendinger’s chances for a win this week are enhanced because of a weaker field than he's ever raced against at the Glen, thanks to Marcos Ambrose no longer being in the series. Ambrose won twice at Watkins Glen and finished second to Allmendinger last season.
