Brett Moffitt the best of many substitute NASCAR drivers in 2015

HAMPTON, Ga. – Brett Moffitt had no more racing commitments for the rest of the year and a mind full of conflicting thoughts as he climbed from the No. 55 Toyota, resisting an outburst of tears.

Michael Waltrip Racing executive vice president Ty Norris stood a few feet away as his crew surrounded and congratulated the 22-year-old, and his mouth hung slightly open. He was impressed and he was agog.

"This has got to be the story of the race," Norris said Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Moffitt, a test driver for Toyota Racing Development, had finished eighth in a one-race replacement of Brian Vickers.

He persevered on a late resumption when he restarted third on weathered tires after skipping a pit stop for track position.
