Alex Bowman fastest in Wednesday's late afternoon practice session at Daytona

Alex Bowman is part of the 'Field' bet at 25/1 to win Daytona 500
Alex Bowman in the No. 7 Tommy Baldwin Racing Chevrolet topped Wednesday’s late afternoon speed charts at Daytona International Speedway among the 29 drivers that participated in preparation for Thursday’s Budweiser Duel qualifying races. There will be four more practice sessions prior to Sunday’s Daytona 500.

Bowman captured the fast lap of 200.495 mph in the draft on the eighth of his 12 laps run during the session. Bowman is looking to make his third Daytona start -- he finished 23rd and 13th in both races last season.

Kasey Kahne was second fastest (200.49 mph) in the session followed by 2011 Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne (200.387), Paul Menard 200.374) and Brian Scott (200.285). Those were the only drivers to top 200 mph during the session.

Eight drivers ran at least 10-consecutive laps with Kahne having the fastest average. Ty Dillon’s 20 laps run were the most while drivers like former Daytona 500 winners Ryan Newman and Matt Kenseth each only logged in one lap. After seeing just how volatile Daytona racing can be in the first weekend of action, there are quite a few teams taking the cautious approach in practices just hoping to take their primary car in tact for Sunday’s race.
