The NASCAR Sprint Cup series heads to Kansas Speedway for the sixth race of the Chase. This will be the second race of the season held on the track and the ninth to be run on a 1.5-mile course.
Looking at the previous eight races held on 1.5-mile tracks this season, it should come with little surprise that Denny Hamlin is listed as the 5-to-1 co-favorite. Hamlin won the April 22 race at Kansas and at Atlanta on Sept. 2. He’s also got two runner-up finishes at Charlotte and a third-place finish at Kentucky to provide the best resume on the circuit on this type of tracks.
Jimmie Johnson is a two-time winner at Kansas, including this race last fall, and is also 5-to-1 to win this week. Johnson doesn’t have any wins on the 1.5s this season, but he does have three runner-ups and two third-place finishes, one of which was at Kansas in the spring. Since the track opened for Cup racing in 2001, no one has been better than Johnson with his 7.9 average finish.
