Talladega lived up to everything we expected with a
24-car pileup on the final lap that took a bit out of several Chase contenders. Talladega is the wild card of the 10-race Chase, and the deck was definitely shuffled. While Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin
all fell further behind Brad Keselowski in points, others like Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne made a move forward.
Had Gordon finished better than 35th at Chicago and closer to what’s been more typical of his recent form – he’s finished third or better at six of the past seven tracks – he’d be leading in points right now. He’s still got a long road ahead and needs plenty of help, but no one is currently hotter than Gordon.
