Kurt Busch using chassis making 2017 debut at Dover

Kurt Busch is 30/1 to win this week at Dover.
Chassis No. 951:
Kurt Busch will pilot Chassis No. 951 in Sunday’s AAA 400 Drive for Autism at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. Built new for 2015, Chassis No. 951 debuted at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July, when Busch was able to overcome a flat tire to come home with a hard-fought eighth-place finish. It then saw action at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois, where Busch overcame a flat tire on lap 86 and a green-flag pit stop that put him a lap down to finish third. Chassis No. 951 made its final start of the 2015 season at HomesteadMiami Speedway, when Busch scraped the wall but fought back to bring home an eighth-place finish.

Chassis No. 951 spent much of the 2016 season as a backup racecar but was called into service at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City after an accident coming off turn four on his last lap of final practice forced the No. 41 team to unload the chassis and start the race from the rear of the field. Busch overcame persistent handling issues to finish 13th. Since then, the car has received chassis updates and the body has been updated in preparation for its first start of the 2017 season.

Kasey Kahne finished fourth in past two Dover spring races

Kasey Kahne is 50/1 to win Sunday at Dover.
Kasey Kahne on racing at Dover
“Dover is a really challenging track. On the long runs there is a lot of rubber that builds up on top of the track and you have to watch for spinning your tires. It’s a very physically demanding track and we’ve run pretty good there the last few races, so I’m looking forward to it.”

GREAT CLIPS AT DOVER: After taking a few weeks off, Great Clips will be the primary sponsor on the No. 5 Chevrolet SS driven by Kasey Kahne this weekend at Dover International Speedway. The longtime Hendrick Motorsports partner will adorn the car for 10 races this season. Kahne most recently drove the Great Clips Chevy at Bristol Motor Speedway, where he finished 20th.

KAHNE AT DOVER: The Enumclaw, Washington, native has started on the outside pole position three times at the “Monster Mile.” In his NASCAR Cup Series career, Kahne has started inside the top-10 eight times at the concrete track. In both of Kahne’s last two spring race starts he’s finished fourth. With the exception of last year’s fall race, the 37-year-old hasn’t finished outside of the top 10 in the last two years at the Dover, Delaware, track.

DOVER LOOP DATA: According to NASCAR’s loop data since 2005, Kahne is third in green-flag passes with 986 and sixth in fastest laps run with 363. He ranks eighth in quality passes with 483. Quality passes are the number of times a driver passes another car that is running in the top 15 while under green-flag conditions. He is ninth in laps spent in the top 15 at the one-mile oval.

TESTING AT NEW HAMPSHIRE: Before heading to Dover this weekend, Kahne and the No. 5 team are representing Hendrick Motorsports at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway test on Tuesday and Wednesday. The New Hampshire test marks the first of the season for Kahne and the No. 5 team.

Famed No. 3 RCR Chevy Back in Winners Circle!

Austin Dillon wins first career Cup race and pays out at 100-to-1 odds in Las Vegas.

Dover Results

CONCORD, N.C. – Armed with a new crew chief and a gas tank that held just enough fuel to get him to the end of 600 miles with less than a second to spare, Austin Dillon won the first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series of his career and put the vaunted No. 3 Chevrolet back in Victory Lane for the first time since 2000.

Working for the first time in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series with crew chief Justin Alexander, Dillon was one of eight drivers who stayed on the track when the strongest cars in the Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway—the Toyotas of eventual runner-up Kyle Busch and third-place Martin Truex Jr.—came to pit road on Lap 368 of 400.

Saving fuel for the entire run, Dillon trailed Jimmie Johnson, who also stayed out, until the seven-time champion ran out of gas with less than three laps left. With Busch and Truex in hot pursuit, Dillon had just enough fuel to get to the finish line.

The No. 3 Chevrolet owned by Dillon’s grandfather, Richard Childress, returned to the winner’s circle for the first time since the late Dale Earnhardt won his last race on Oct. 15, 2000 at Talladega. After Earnhardt’s death in the 2001 Daytona 500, Childress retired the number in NASCAR’s premier series until Dillon ran his first full season of Cup racing in 2014.

"It hasn’t sunk in yet," Dillon said in Victory Lane. "I can’t believe it. I was just really focused on those last laps. My fiancĂ© wrote in the car, ‘When you keep God in first-place, he will take you places you never imagined.’

"And, I never imagined I be here at the 600 Victory Lane. Praise the Lord and all these guys who work so hard; and my pit crew is the best on pit road. I love it for them. We’re in the playoffs. It’s awesome."

Dillon, who led only the final two laps, had to restrain himself from using too much fuel in pursuit of Johnson.

"I was just trying to be patient with the No. 48," Dillon said. "I could see him saving. I thought I’d saved enough early, where I could attack at the end, but I tried to wait as long as possible. And when he ran out, I figured I’d go back in and save where I was lifting, and it worked out.

"I ran out at the line, and it gurgled all around just to do one little spin and push it back to Victory Lane."

Matt Kenseth ran fourth, followed by Joe Gibbs racing teammate Denny Hamlin, as Toyotas claimed positions two through five.

The fireworks started early at the 1.5-mile track, more than six hours before the race ended. On Lap 20, five laps before a scheduled competition caution, a large piece of debris shot from the back of Jeffrey Earnhardt’s smoking No. 33 car into the path of Chase Elliott’s No. 24 Chevrolet.

The debris knocked a hole in the nose of Elliott’s car, and flames erupted beneath the engine compartment as fluid spilled from the Chevy. Brad Keselowski skidded through the oil, as if his No. 2 Ford had hit a patch of ice, and piled into the back of Elliott’s car, destroying both machines.

"Somebody broke, and there was just oil everywhere, and I couldn’t turn," Keselowski said. "I ran into the back of Chase. Somebody broke in front of him, and then he ran over what they broke and then he broke, so there were two cars broke in front of me and just oil everywhere.

"You couldn’t stop and turn. You couldn’t do anything. It’s a real bummer for our team. We had a really fast Miller Lite Ford, and I think we had a shot at winning tonight, but that’s how it goes."

Elliott was equally disappointed that his car was on a wrecker in the garage.

"The No. 33 broke something ahead of me and I ended up hitting it," Elliott said. "I hit it pretty hard. I knew it had hurt our nose at least, then I saw some flames and figured we were laying down oil too, I guess.

"Brad couldn’t get stopped and ended up kind of finishing us off, but it was a bummer. I hate it. I don’t really know what you do about stuff like that. Just move on."

After the subsequent restart on Lap 28, the rest of the first 100-lap stage ran caution-free, with Kyle Busch passing Truex on Lap 90 and pulling away to secure the playoff point accorded the stage winner.

Truex was leading when the caution flag flew for the third time on Lap 142 after Matt DiBenedetto’s No. 32 Ford slammed into the outside wall. Moments later, NASCAR red-flagged the race because of the threat of heavy rain and lightning in the area.

The rain arrived and drenched the track, forcing a delay of 1 hour, 39 minutes, 56 seconds before the cars started rolling again.

Truex dominated after a restart on Lap 176 and won the second stage going away. The driver of the No. 78 Toyota appeared headed for another victory in Stage 3 until series leader Kyle Larson blew a tire and pounded the wall on Lap 292.

"I got really loose into (Turn) 3 and hit the wall and got a lot of damage, and the tire started to go down and then exploded in (Turn) 1," Larson said. "I just hate it that I made a mistake there in Turn 3 and got in the wall.

"I wasn’t even running hard up there. I just got loose and then I hit it and it ruined our day. I’m hoping to hold onto the point lead and then go to Dover next week and try to do better."

(As it turned out, Truex took over the series lead by five points over Larson, with Keselowski 82 points back in third-place.)

After Larson’s accident, Truex lost three spots on pit road on Lap 294, ceding the stage win to Denny Hamlin.

But Truex, who led a race-high 233 laps—and led the most laps in the Coca-Cola 600 for the third straight year with only last year’s win to show for it—regained the top spot after a restart on lap 334, clearing Kyle Busch through the first two corners, and soon pulled away to a two-second lead.

Then Dillon’s fuel-mileage play changed everything.

Chase Elliott on Coca-Cola 600: "The extra 100 miles is real"

Chase Elliott is 15/1 to win Coca-Cola 600.
Chase Elliott on racing at Charlotte
“The extra 100 miles is real. I think it’s really more stress on the components, driveline, engine, rear-ends, hubs – an extra 100 miles on all the things and parts and pieces we have moving around is a lot. I think it really puts the stress on that stuff more than it does the drivers. It is 100 miles more, but it doesn’t seem much different or hasn’t my first two tries.”

Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 24 NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet SS, will visit the Charlotte Motor Speedway media center on Thursday, May 25, at 1 p.m. local time.

NO. 24 NAPA AUTO PARTS CHEVROLET SS: NAPA AUTO PARTS will return to the hood of the No. 24 Chevrolet SS this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Atlanta-based company will serve as majority sponsor for Chase Elliott and the No. 24 team for 24 Cup Series races this year.

CHARLOTTE STATS: This weekend, Elliott is set to make his fourth start at the 1.5-mile quad oval. In his previous three starts, the 21-year-old driver collected one top-10 finish and led 103 laps. Elliott averages a starting position of 14.3 and finishing position of 19.7 at the track. Elliott has also made four starts at Charlotte in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, where he garnered three top-10s, led 66 laps and earned a pole award in October 2014.

600 MILES OF REMEMBRANCE: This weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Elliott's windshield will bear the name of U.S. Army Captain Todd Tyler Christmas as part of the NASCAR Salutes initiative. Christmas was born March 8, 1978, in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute and Texas A&M University, where he was the distinguished military graduate in August 2001. After attending the United States Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was awarded the parachutists badge, he joined the 1st Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment. While in the battalion, Christmas served as an avenger platoon leader, linebacker platoon leader and battery executive officer while deployed in support of Iraqi Freedom. In June 2004, he was selected to serve as the aide de camp for Brigadier General Charles Allen, the assistant division commander (Support). Christmas passed away on Nov. 29, 2004 -- he was traveling in a Blackhawk helicopter when it collided with a guy wire near Waco, Texas, killing all aboard. Christmas’ parents, Becky and Brad, will both be in attendance this weekend at Charlotte.

HOME SWEET HOME: While all team members currently live in North Carolina, there are three members of the No. 24 team that hail from the Tar Heel State: gas man and engineer Travis Gordon (Richfield, North Carolina), tire carrier Jared Seate (Charlotte, North Carolina) and mechanic Ben Bowden (Julian, North Carolina).

THIS SEASON: So far this season, Elliott has averaged a starting position of 10.3 and finishing position of 13.3. The driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet has had 192 fastest laps, spent 2,962 laps in the top 15 and led 169 laps.

CHASE RACELOTT: In February, it was announced that Elliott would voice the character “Chase Racelott” in the upcoming Disney Pixar movie "Cars 3" and he would be among a few other familiar voices. Monday evening, the first image of Elliott’s "Cars 3" character was unveiled via NASCAR's social media. Like Elliott, in "Cars 3," Racelott is a second-generation Piston Cup racer. "Cars 3" is set to premiere in theaters on June 16.
