Notes of Interest

● After a 13-week offseason, the NASCAR Cup Series is gearing up for the first race of 2022. It’s a season that will begin in a new location, on a new track, with a new car. The non-points Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum kicks off the season Saturday and Sunday at a track other than Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway for the first time since 1981. On a purpose-built, quarter-mile, asphalt oval inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Cup Series will debut the new NextGen car, the seventh variation of the NASCAR stock car first introduced in 1949. And, Chase Briscoe and the No. 14 Ford Mustang team for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) will be showing up with a new look.

● The famed No. 14 Ford Mustang will roll into the Coliseum sporting the red-and-black colors embraced by fans when the car was piloted by team co-owner and three-time Cup Series champion Tony Stewart. Briscoe’s new livery includes subtle detailing around the hood vents and shadowed behind the iconic number that represents a new partnership with Mahindra Tractors, a brand of Houston-based Mahindra Ag North America. Part of Mahindra Group’s Automotive and Farm Sector, Mahindra Ag North America is the No. 1 selling farm tractor company in the world, based on volumes across all company brands. Mahindra farm equipment is engineered to be easy to operate by first-time tractor or side-by-side owners, and heavy duty to tackle the tough jobs of rural living, farming and ranching. Steel-framed Mahindra Tractors and side-by-sides are ideal for customers who demand performance, reliability and comfort at a great value. Mahindra dealers are independent, family-owned businesses located throughout the U.S. and Canada.

● While Briscoe will be behind the wheel of the No. 14 for the first race of the year, Stewart will be keeping a close eye on his team from the FOX Sports broadcast booth and will have a front row seat for the debut of the Mahindra Tractors national television campaign featuring the SHR duo. The first in a series of spots features the mentor and mentee relationship between the Indiana natives and sets out to settle the debate of who is tougher. The national spot airing during the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum signifies a continuation of Mahindra’s longstanding relationship with the FOX family of networks, which in 2022 expands to include in-race branding and additional in-car coverage of Briscoe and the No. 14 Mahindra Tractors Mustang. Race fans will see plenty of the Mahindra red in tv spots during race broadcasts, picture-in-picture race coverage and during weekly FS1 broadcasts like RaceHub.

● Briscoe, the 2021 Cup Series Rookie of the Year, cut his teeth on the bullrings of the Midwest, learning to navigate the tight corners of quarter-mile tracks and avoiding destruction nearly every lap to make it to the finish. Though the track built inside the Coliseum won’t be covered in the dirt that Briscoe is so accustomed to, the format of the event provides some much-desired familiarity for the seasoned dirt-track racer.

● On Saturday, NASCAR Cup Series competitors will take to the track for practice prior to single-car qualifying runs to determine the starting order for four heat races. The field will be open to 40 entrants. On Sunday, on-track action will begin with four, 25-lap heat races consisting of 10 cars each. Below is a breakdown of how the heat races will be filled out:

● The top-four fastest qualifiers from Saturday’s single-car qualifying session will be on the pole for each heat race, while cars that qualified fifth through eighth will make up the other half of the front row in each heat.
● The remainder of each field will be filled out using this methodology: Heat one will be made up of cars with qualifying positions of one, five, nine, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, 33, 37.
● The top-four finishers (16 total cars) from each heat race automatically advance through to the Busch Light Clash, with the winner of heat one winning the pole and the heat two winner earning the outside pole.
● The winners of heats three and four will fill out the second row, with the remaining order of those 16 cars being determined in the same manner.
● The remaining six finishing positions from each heat (24 total cars) that did not advance will continue through to one of two 50-lap Last Chance Qualifying (LCQ) races. Below is a breakdown on how the LCQ will be filled out:
● The starting order for these two events will be determined based on finishing positions in the heat races.
● Those who did not advance from heats one and three will make up the first LCQ race. The second race will be made of up those from heats two and four.
● The fifth-place finishers from heats one and two will be on the pole in their respective LCQ races. The fifth-place finishers from heats three and four will be on the outside pole.
● This pattern will continue to fill out 12 cars in each event.
● The top-three finishers (six total cars) from both LCQ races will advance to the Busch Light Clash, filling out positions 17-22 of the 23 available positions.
● The final spot in the Busch Light Clash will be reserved for the driver who finished the highest in the 2021 points standings who does not transfer on finishing position in the heat races or LCQ races.
● All other drivers will be eliminated from competition for the remainder of the event weekend.

● Put simply, every driver will have to race their way into the feature. While this is Briscoe’s first time participating in the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum, the 27-year-old has already raced his way through heat races in 2022 with Mahindra Tractors by his side. Three weeks ago, Briscoe competed in the 2022 Chili Bowl Nationals in a Mahindra Tractors-sponsored Midget. During his qualifying night, he finished second in his heat race and won his qualifier to start fifth in the Monday-night A-main. An 11th-place finish secured him a seventh-place starting spot for the C-Main on Championship Saturday. Good fortune did not follow Briscoe into the C-Main, however, as first-lap contact damaged the No. 5 Chase Briscoe Racing entry and he finished sixth, just one spot short of the transfer and ending his hopes of competing for a Golden Driller. This weekend, he’ll look to rebound with the help of his years of dirt racing experience against NASCAR’s elite Cup Series competitors.

Chase Briscoe, Driver of the No. 14 Mahindra Tractors Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:

You’ve already raced a few times this year, so how has the season started and what do you expect during your first Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum?

“I think it’s gone OK, so far. It was nice to have a chance to start the season off with Mahindra Tractors at the Chili Bowl. I wish it had gone better but we have a whole season of Cup racing to get the results we want. It’s been exciting to have them on board and supporting everything we do as a team and some of the racing I do on my own, but I’m really looking forward to getting to L.A. and having them at the first race of the NASCAR season. I’m not sure what to expect, honestly. With a quarter-mile track, I think we can expect a lot of beating and banging and maybe even some tempers by the end. That’s typically what we get at these short tracks. I’d like to say it’s the first race, so everyone will take it easy but, after heat races and everything, I wouldn’t be surprised if a few guys had their feelings hurt. We’re all racers and we want to win, so it’ll for sure be a good show for everyone watching.”

You mentioned Mahindra Tractors being on your Chili Bowl car and the support they’ve shown the team as you prepare for the start of the season. Does this partnership feel like a natural fit?

“It really does. They’ve done a lot in just the few months we’ve been together to show that they are all in and that’s huge for a sponsor that is new to the sport in this way. The announcement in Indianapolis was really cool and it meant a lot to be able to start the next chapter at a place that means so much to me. They’ve even had a couple of team lunches for the guys in the shop and I think it’s good for those guys to see it’s not just about me. It’s about the confidence they have in all of us. We’re a team and we’re all here for each other. It takes a lot of work and dedication to do what we do and to have a sponsor that is heavily invested in every part of it is a big deal. It means a lot and is a great reflection of who they are as a company. There’s a family feel to how this is all coming together and I just want to make them proud of this partnership.”

What was the biggest thing you learned during your rookie year in the Cup Series?

“The biggest thing I learned my rookie year was that it takes a lot of things in the Cup Series to have a good result. At the end of the day, every little detail matters, whether it’s getting off and on pit road under green, having a good pit stop, and every pit stop with no penalties, and good restarts. It literally takes every single thing to even be in the hunt at the end of the day. There are days where you can do everything perfect and you’re still not in the hunt, so just trying to capitalize on those days where you have a good car and good speed and not make mistakes. Last year, I made a lot of mistakes, whether it was penalties or just not maximizing pit road and things like that. So, I’m going to try improve on that this year and learn from those things and be able to capitalize when we do have a good car.”

How are you better as a driver in January 2022 compared to January 2021, after one season in the Cup Series, and what specific areas of your skill set are you most wanting to work on over the course of this season?

“Everybody at the Cup Series level has been a winner their entire career. They’ve won at many different levels. Even the guys running 25th have won their entire career so, for me, the Cup side really opened up my eyes. In the Xfinity Series and the Truck Series, you’re only racing against seven, eight, nine, 10 really competitive drivers and you can make mistakes and get away with it and still win. You can even make multiple mistakes and still win where, on the Cup side, you can literally do everything perfect and still run 15th. So, just trying to figure out how to minimize those mistakes was probably the hardest thing for me. I was just looking the other day and there was a stat that I think I had more penalties on pit road than anybody in the whole field, so just trying to do less of that. Those guys are so good. They’ve all been racing 15-20 years. They’ve been running 500 miles every weekend for 15-20 years. They’re just good. They have so much racecraft. They know where to put their car to make it hard for you to pass. They’ve seen every situation, so getting that experience of racing around guys that are much, much better, much more experienced than me was huge, I felt like, the first year. Hopefully, I can use that to my advantage this coming year. But then I would say the biggest area where I would like to improve is on the short tracks. I feel like I’m probably the only guy in the entire field in the Cup Series that has never short-track raced my entire life. I never ran a Late Model. I never ran anything. The first time I ever ran a short track was in the Truck Series at Martinsville. I really struggle when we go to places that have that short-track feel – a Martinsville, Richmond, New Hampshire. Those have always been statistically my worst racetracks and, just how you have to drive the car at those places, I really struggle.”

Cliint Bowyer is 25/1 to win at Pocono Raceway

CLINT BOWYER
Track Position Likely Key to Pocono Success

KANNAPOLIS, North Carolina (July 22, 2019) – Seconds after Clint Bowyer climbed from his No. 14 Ford Mustang June 2 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway, he had a few words to summarize his fifth-place finish in the 400-mile Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race.

“That was all about track position,” said Bowyer, who has the same view more than a month later as the Cup Series returns to Pocono for Sunday’s 400-mile race.

“We weren’t happy with the finish in June because we were better than fifth – we had a really good Mustang that day,” Bowyer said. “It was really hard to pass, so it kind of came down to track position throughout. We lost a lot of stage points because of track position. I think you will see track position be just as important at Pocono again this weekend.”

Bonus points and track position will likely be key words repeated a lot this weekend at Pocono as the urgency builds in the Cup Series garage with the end of the 26-race regular season fast approaching.

With just five races remaining, Bowyer and a host of other drivers are on the cusp of securing or losing a berth in the 16-driver playoffs.

Bowyer arrives at Pocono 16th in the standings, but just 17 points ahead of 17th-place Jimmie Johnson and 72 points behind 10th-place Alex Bowman. He knows there is time to fall outside of playoff-clinching position, but also time to gain positions.

It all continues Sunday at Pocono, a track that has been kind to Bowyer over his career. He owns two top-five finishes and 10 top-10s in 26 career starts at the Pennsylvania 2.5-mile triangle. His Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) team has also done well there. SHR has two victories at Pocono – Tony Stewart in June 2009 and Kurt Busch in June 2016 – and has 22 top-fives and 32 top-10s in 62 starts.

“We need to put together a good run in each of the next five races,” said Bowyer, who arrives at Pocono after a 20th-place finish last weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. He started 16th and finished fourth in Stage 1 and appeared destined for a top-10 finish but contact with another car late in Stage 2 damaged his car ruining his chances for a good finish.

“We have been fast this year but something has seemed to happen and we shoot ourselves in the foot or get some type of bad luck,” Bowyer said.

“We aren’t giving up and we know we can run up front. With no mistakes, we are a top team. This is getting to the money time in our season. That’s when the pay window’s open, the money’s on the line, it’s go time. Let’s see what we’re made of. Let’s line these things up and get after it.”

At Pocono this weekend, Bowyer will carry the colors of Toco Warranty, whose Toco All-Star Sweepstakes offers fans a chance to get to Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November. One lucky winner and guest will attend the season finales of the World of Outlaws World Nov. 8 to 9 at The Dirt Track near Charlotte, North Carolina, as guests of Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) before jetting off to South Florida to see the NASCAR season finale Nov. 16 and 17 with Bowyer and SHR.

To register, fans simply need to go to www.TocoWarranty.com. A winner will be drawn by 5 p.m. EDT on Sept. 16.

Toco Warranty partnered with SHR and TSR earlier this year. The provider of pay-as-you-go vehicle repair coverage is a primary partner of Bowyer and the No. 14 team of SHR and the co-primary partner of Donny Schatz and TSR’s No. 15 Winged Sprint car. Toco Warranty is also an associate sponsor of Tony Stewart, who is competing in more than 90 Winged Sprint car races this year.

Consumers demand affordable monthly payments and Toco Warranty offers an easy online experience via its website, www.TocoWarranty.com.  It is where customers can purchase and review their vehicle service contract, manage online payments and access dedicated customer concierge services.

Clint Bowyer, Driver of the No. 14 Toco Warranty/Haas Automation Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:

What are your thoughts on Pocono Raceway?
“Pocono is a really tough track with three different turns. I want to make sure we qualify well so we can get a good starting position and pit stall. As we saw in June, passing is pretty tough there, so track position is everything. We had a good car there last time and I expect we will again. Where we are in points (16th), we need to score as many bonus points as we can.”

What would it mean to win at Pocono with Mike Bugarewicz as your crew chief?
“I know that’s a dream of Buga’s to win at Pocono with his friends and family in the stands so, yes, it would be cool to win for him. But winning anywhere right now would be a celebration. I don’t care if it’s at Pocono, Watkins Glen or Michigan. So, to answer your question, yes, a win for Buga on Sunday at Pocono would make him, me, the 14 crew, everyone at SHR, Toco Warranty, Ford and everyone in the grandstands happy. Let’s do it.”

Mike Bugarewicz, Crew Chief of the No. 14 Toco Warranty/Haas Automation Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:
What does Pocono mean to you?
“There’s a simple, one-word description I have of Pocono, and it’s ‘home.’ I grew up about 20 minutes from the racetrack. I’ve raced up in the Northeast and attended many of the races at Pocono. I used to go to qualifying all the time there. Pocono means a lot to me. It would really mean a lot to me to have a win there at some point in my career. I haven’t been successful with that, yet, but I hope to change that shortly.”

Updated Westgate odds to win 2016 Sprint Cup following Kentucky

Kevin Harvick one of four drivers at 7/1 odds to win Sprint Cup.
LAS VEGAS -- Four drivers are currently co-favorites to win the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship and their odds haven't changed much on them since numbers were posted in November. Part of the reason for good, or stale, numbers is because of the Chase format. The other part is that Las Vegas is pretty good at identify who the top contenders are supposed to be.

There will be 16 drivers participating in the 10-race Chase that begins at Chicagoland Speedway Sept. 18 and 11 of them have been identified already by virtue of an automatic qualifier from winning a race. Five more will make it either by points or winning one of the next eight races before the Chase begins. At this stage, points mean nothing for the 11 drivers qualified. Winning is still nice too, but it's not as important as preparing the teams for the Chase.

Kevin Harvick was the 5-to-1 favorite coming into the season and he currently leads the series in points, but the 2014 Sprint Cup champ has won just one race on the season. Four points behind him in second is Brad Keselowski who leads the series with four wins, including the past two on the schedule. Keselowski, who won the Sprint Cup in 2012, opened at 8-to-1 and is now down to 7-to-1. Last years champ Kyle Busch and top contender Joey Logano are still at their opening 7-to-1 odds.

As the Chase begins, we'll begin to see rapid changes in the numbers from race to race as points become a big deal and a win automatically qualifies a driver to the next round of three races.

Here's a look at all the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook numbers updated as of Monday, July 11 with opening number (if any changes) in parenthesis.

Las Vegas Sports Books Post Their 2014 Daytona 500 Odds

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is consensus favorite to win 2014 Daytona 500
LAS VEGAS-- The first day of Daytona preseason testing was rained out Thursday, but it’s as good time as any to see what a some sports books in Las Vegas are thinking about the 2014 Daytona 500 as we all get our juices flowing again for the upcoming season. A few books have had odds posted for the past month and several others are just starting through the process for NASCAR’s Super Bowl, scheduled for February 23.

Because the Daytona 500 odds have such a long shelf life, books can leave them on the board longer than any other race of the season. And because of that, the Daytona 500 generates the second-most action of all the races. The phenomenal Las Vegas NASCAR weekend that dwarfs write from the other tracks roughly doubles the Daytona 500 handle.

If looking at the odds chart below, you can see one of the favorites is Dale Earnhardt Jr (10/1), a driver who hasn’t won a Superspeedway race since 2004, when he won the Daytona 500 and the fall Talladega race. However, he’s been darn close. Since winning the 2004 Daytona 500, a span of 20 races, no driver has a better average (12.9) at Daytona. Last February he was runner-up.

Because of the restrictor-plates and several drivers having a better chance of winning than they do without them on other tracks, the top drivers are getting substantially higher odds. At Las Vegas, Jimmie Johnson will be 7-to-2 and then bet down to 3-to-1. But at Daytona, a place he swept last season, a bettor can get 12-to-1 on him at William Hill bet shops. That is a pretty fat number, but also very telling.

Last season, the Joe Gibbs Racing team looked to have the best cars coming out of preseason testing. While they ran very well in the races, they didn’t come away with any wins in the four plate races. The best car rarely wins here and in some cases the best drivers don’t always win. We can all agree that Tony Stewart (15/1) is an elite all-timer, but he still hasn’t won the Daytona 500.

Jamie McMurray (30/1), the 2010 Daytona 500 winner, got the fourth plate win of his career last season at Talladega. David Ragan (75/1) won at the spring Talladega race for his second career win - the other coming at Daytona (2011) - so he’s got to be considered. At Las Vegas, there's no chance of considering a bet on Ragan, even at 7,500-to-1 odds. But 75/1 at Daytona, sure, why not?

Each of the odds available around town offer a little something different, which makes a walk down the strip to these books worthwhile. A nice little triangle to hit all three at the same time is walking from the LVH to the Riviera (William Hill) and Circus Circus (MGM). It’s an old-school walk, but also fun reflecting on some Las Vegas history. And there is a lot of it there between Elvis (Happy Birthday), Liberace, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

For whatever it’s worth, after each of his championship seasons, Dale Earnhardt was a regular guest of Mel Larson’s in the penthouse suite at Circus Circus. There is no record or markings commemorating it, but the suite is available for booking and still has that look of early Las Vegas charm and glamour.

After the preseason testing concludes, we’ll review what we saw and how it reflects the odds for Speedweeks events.

Johnson 3-to-1 Favorite to win 2013 Sprint Cup Title

Brad Keselowski is 8-to-1 to win Championship
The Linemakers on Sporting News

LAS VEGAS -- Based on the LVH SuperBook’s updated NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship odds, Jimmie Johnson looks to be a runaway freight train as a huge 3-to-1 favorite. His nearest competition, based on the odds, is Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne and Matt Kenseth – each at 8-to-1.

Johnson, traditionally a slow starter, has looked terrific so far this season, as he leads Keselowski by five points in the standings. The thinking with his short championship price is that the five-time champ has an advantage in the new Gen-6 car. He’s already excelled on a variety of tracks, a great recipe for a sixth championship.

However, 2012 champ – Keselowski – is the only driver to finish in the top five of all three races this season. The results at Daytona, Phoenix and Las Vegas – each vastly different tracks – give a great indication that Keselowski can be just as versatile as Johnson in 2013 and perhaps start his own legacy as one of the greats in the sport.

Jeff Gordon Looking for win No. 88 at Daytona

Gordon is 10/1 to win the Sprint Unlimited (Getty)
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 8, 2013) - Last November in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Jeff Gordon notched NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory No. 87. This February 24 in the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, the four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion will attempt to win two consecutive in The Sunshine State as he begins his third decade in NASCAR’s premier division.

The victory at Homestead allowed Gordon and the Drive To End Hunger team to carry momentum into the off-season. But with the introduction of NASCAR’s Gen-6 (Generation 6) car models for the 2013 tour, there was not much “down” time since the team was busy preparing a fleet of new No. 24 Chevrolet SS’s.

“To have a great finish like we had at Homestead and take that into the off-season was a big plus and a big positive for us,” said Gordon. “It helped us stay energized through the off-season to get ready for this new season. No matter what changes occur – whether they’re very little or big changes like we’ve had with the new car – the team can rally around that and it’s a great boost. You need a lot of energy over the off-season.

“I don’t think anybody is better than Hendrick Motorsports when it comes to adapting to new cars and being prepared. I feel very confident in the team – and our organization – to come out strong and remain strong throughout the year.”

In 40 starts at Daytona, the all-time leader in restrictor-plate victories (12) has six wins, three poles, 12 top-fives and 19 top-10′s. And a strong result in the season-opening Daytona 500 carries through an entire season, right?

“Not necessarily,” said Gordon, a three-time winner of NASCAR’s “Super Bowl” in 1997, 1999 and 2005. “We’ve won the 500 and the championship in the same season (in 1997), but we’ve also crashed out of the event but still won the championship (in 2001).

“We’ve also won our biggest race and not made the Chase (in 2005).”

With the new car, there are a lot of unknowns entering Speedweeks. With a new name and a new format, there are a lot unknowns ahead of the February 16 non-points event for pole winners from the 2012 season, The Sprint Unlimited.

“I’m excited about the Sprint Unlimited – it’s going to be unique and different,” said Gordon, whose 20 consecutive years with a pole is tied for most all-time with David Pearson. “I think it ‘s a really cool idea that has engaged the fans and given them a ‘say’ in what will happen during the event. From what I understand, we’re not even going to know our starting positions until we show up for driver introductions. I think that’s cool.

“The Sprint Unlimited also gives us a great opportunity for the drivers to understand what we’re dealing with for the Budweiser Duels (qualifying races on Thursday) as well as the Daytona 500. I think the racing at Daytona will be extremely exciting, and the new car will push us to explore all options to see what might work in the draft – especially what might work with only two or three laps-to-go.

“If a driver can find an advantage in the draft, you can be sure it will be exploited in the final laps of the Daytona 500.”

Keselowski Becoming a Major Player in 2012 Chase

Can Keselowski do what Stewart did in 2011 Chase? (Getty)
Sporting News

When the 2012 Chase for the Championship started, Brad Keselowski was installed at respectable 8-to-1 odds to win it all, but realistically, he wasn’t given much of a shot. Between Jimmie Johnson having that look in his eye that his sixth title would not be taken from him and Denny Hamlin dominating the 1.5-mile and flat tracks, it was easy to discount Keselowski.

But here we are after three races with Keselowski leading in points, having won two of the three Chase races (Chicago, Dover). It’s reminiscent of Tony Stewart’s improbable run last season, when he won five races in the 10-week Chase after not winning any in the first 26. In Keselowski’s case, he was already ahead of the game with three wins.

Johnson is still the 3-to-2 favorite after his third straight top-5 finish Sunday, but Keselowski is quickly gaining respect and is now the second choice at 9-to-4 odds.

Johnson Favored to Win 2012 Dover AAA 400

Johnson is 4-to-1 favorite to sweep Dover for third time in career (Getty)
By Micah Roberts
The Linemakers on Sporting News

Denny Hamlin made good on his called shot of winning at New Hampshire last week, but that might be the end of those kinds of predictions, especially this week at Dover. Between car owner Joe Gibbs, dating back to his NFL days, never wanting to give his opponents bulletin board material, to the fact that Hamlin has a 20.5 average finish at Dover, Hamlin should be pretty quiet, on and off the track, this week.

Hamlin may have an edge on the four 1.5-mile tracks coming up and should fare better than most at Phoenix and Martinsville, but Dover is another story. Dover is Jimmie Johnson territory. Johnson has rarely run out of the top10 at this track and has conquered it seven times over his career, including the race this past June, when he led 289 of the 400 laps.

Hamlin, on the other hand, has not performed well at Dover over his 13 career starts on the track. His best was fourth-place — one two occasions — and he has finished 36th or worse four times. He comes in on a three-race stretch of mediocrity on the track that has seen him finish 16th or worse each time.

Some Value To Be Had Betting NASCAR Futures Right Now

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

Vegas and Fontana wins are great indicators Stewart is driver to beat in 2012
When the 10 race Chase for the Championship format came around in 2004, it also changed the way many sharp bettors made future wagers to win the Championship at Las Vegas sports books. Prior to the Chase, it served a bettor well to get a jump on the sports books early on with odds because inevitably, the driver who led in points by the time the series hit the midseason Firecracker 400 at Daytona usually went on to win the Championship.

Now, under the Chase format, the urgency isn’t quite there yet and bettors can get a better read on how drivers will perform on the key tracks before investing in future wagers. So much can change in the final 10 races, but the one constant is the type of track that dominates Chase races, which is the 1.5 and 2-mile tracks that require lots of horsepower and great handling.

For five of the last six years, Jimmie Johnson dominated on those type of tracks and left a sour taste in every bettor’s mouth who dared to bet against him to win the Championship. Because Johnson’s odds were so low, there wasn’t much perceived value with him despite knowing he was going to be hard to topple.

But last season gave us a great example of quick things can change in the Chase. Tony Stewart hadn’t won a race in the first 26 races, but came charging out of the gate by winning the first two Chase races and eventually winning five of the 10 culminating with a fantastic NASCAR moment in the season finale at Homestead where Stewart won the race and Championship by beating Carl Edwards, who came in second.

What last year showed us was that things could change drastically in the middle of a season for a team that looked like they had no business of making the Chase. It now offers bettors a reason to try and be ahead of the curve in finding some value on drivers a little earlier than usual because we know the giant of Jimmie Johnson no longer casts such a fierce shadow.

When looking at the first six races run thus far, the driver you have to look at as the favorite is Tony Stewart just because of his wins at Las Vegas and California. Those type of tracks are great indicators to how we’ll see Stewart run for most of the season since they dominate the schedule. Stewart opened the season with 8-to-1 odds at the LVH Super Book and is now currently the 5-to-1 co-favorite with Johnson.

Carl Edwards hasn’t looked like his normal self during practice on the tracks he’s supposed to do well at and has had his odds go from 5-to-1 up to 6-to-1. But despite the uncharacteristic poor practices, Edwards still managed to finish fifth at Las Vegas and California which could be a sign that things might be better than they appear moving forward. It’s more likely that Edwards will improve which makes his odds right now the best you’ll probably see all season.

The current points leader is Greg Biffle and despite all his consistency early on, his odds are at 12-to-1 to win the title, a small drop from his opener of 20-to-1. Biffle’s got the Fenway-Roush backing behind him and also fared very well at Las Vegas and California with third and sixth-place finishes, respectively.

Despite no wins in 135 straight races, Junior's 2012 run is hard to ignore
The driver that Las Vegas isn’t buying into is Dale Earnhardt Jr, who currently sits second in points. Even with all of his fans betting and thinking this is the year Junior finally wins a Championship, yet alone a single race, he can still be bought at 18-to-1 odds. Strangely enough, I’m buying into it as well.

For the first time since he’s been with Hendrick Motorsports, his car has the look of being able finish in the top-5 at any track. On the most important type of tracks that will decide his fate, he finished 10th at Las Vegas and third at California.

The strangest odds of all, or possibly the smartest, is Kasey Kahne, who currently sits 31st in points with low odds of 15-to-1. Despite Murphy’s Law being the theme for the No. 5 team thus far, Kahne has had a car capable of winning at least four of the six races which gives him extreme value down the stretch when they do finally break through. Unlike pre-2004, Kahne can still make up ground and go on a run in the Chase like Stewart did last year. This same No. 5 Hendrick team had similar circumstances occur early on in 2009 with Mark Martin and straightened things out to finish second in points.

A couple of interesting looks that warrant consideration is the Michael Waltrip Racing duo of Martin Truex Jr (40/1) and Clint Bowyer (30/1) who are both within the top-10 because of strong weekly performances. They each have the look of drivers that could be just getting started. Their strong practices at each track have translated well to race day which is a sign that things are clicking well.

Brad Keselowski (12/1) also fits into that category, but unlike Truex and Bowyer, Keselowski hasn’t shown much on the important tracks of Las Vegas and California which leads me to believe they’ll have a hard time competing for the Championship.

If I was forced to spend $100 right now on who would win this years championship, $60 of it would go on Stewart (5/1) with $20 each on Kahne (15/1) and Earnhardt Jr (18/1).

We’ll see how much changes after we get a third part of the master equation next week at Texas which is a great prelude to what we’ll see at the sister tracks of Charlotte and Atlanta. Until then, have a great Easter weekend and try your best to enjoy the off week without NASCAR.

2012 Bristol Food City 500 Preview

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

Kyle Busch has been king of the concrete (Getty)
Last week in Las Vegas we got to see some major horsepower displayed, but not a lot of drivers were mixing it up while running in single file for most of the day. This week at Bristol we get some side-by-side short track racing which usually brings and the best and worst of drivers. The drama created on the track translates into must-see TV throughout the race.

“Racing at Bristol is like fighter jets in a gymnasium," said Carl Edwards earlier this week. "The banking is so high, you drive down in the corner and the forces pushing the car into the track seem so much greater than anywhere else we go. The rate at which the car is changing direction is very fast. It always takes me a few laps in the race, 10-15 laps in, to get comfortable with the pace of it because things are happening so quickly there.

Bristol is a high banked half-mile track that has multiple grooves allowing drivers to pass either high or low. We don’t see the type of love taps or punts we used to under the old layout where drivers fought for the bottom line, but the best thing about Bristol stills remains: it’s tight and cramped with all 43 drivers trying to create their own space when very little is available.

The favorite coming into this weeks race is Kyle Busch due to winning four of the last six races run there. He has five wins in 14 starts and it would seem appropriate that a driver with the nickname “Rowdy” would be the driver to beat on a track like Bristol.

“I’m not exactly sure what makes me so good at Bristol," said Busch when asked about his Bristol success. "I’ve just had a lot of success there, but I’ve also had some misfortune there, too. Ever since I got through my rookie year, I’ve just taken a liking to the place. Of course, I’ve been able to get some help from my brother (Kurt). He’s always been really, really good there. But, when they changed the track to this current surface, I just really took to it right away. I really liked it and I’ve been fast there, but also I’ve had great racecars from Joe Gibbs Racing."

The timing for Bristol couldn’t have come at a better time for Busch because he’s still searching for a good run that meets his standards. He’s had only one top-10 finish in the three races run thus far and currently sits 12th in points. The one positive out of Busch so far is that despite not having great cars, he’s been able take the finish allowed by the car and not try and push it more than it was capable of. The fact that he’s 12th right now could be a sign of maturity and finally understanding big picture racing.

Busch will be using a brand new chassis this week with hopes of getting his sixth career Bristol win and make him the active leader among drivers. He'll be half way to the track record of 12 held by Darrell Waltrip.

Carl Edwards is a two-time winner at Bristol that probably feels very fortunate to be where he’s at right now. In the last two races, Edwards did not have a good car, but what they did last week was amazing. After looking terrible in Saturday’s final practices, Edwards crew had to make the car better during the race. Edwards was not a contender throughout running outside the top-15, but during each pit stop, they got progressively better until ultimately finishing in fifth-place. That is the sign of championship team. Edwards best finish over the last six Bristol races was runner-up in this race last season.

Edwards will be using a chassis that saw action last season at Chicago (fourth-place) and Dover (third-place).

Sitting atop the leader board in points is Edwards’ teammate Greg Biffle. After three races, he’s the only driver to finish in the top-5 in all three. Bristol has been one of Biffle’s better tracks over his career. Although he’s never won a Cup race there, he does have an 11.8 average finish position that includes six top-5 finishes. This team is really clicking right now and although it’s early, he might be a driver to take an early shot with to win the championship. The LVH Super Book updated their future odds with Biffle at 12-to-1.

Johnson has adapted well to Bristol's new surface (Getty)
The favorites to win the championship are currently Edwards and Jimmie Johnson at 5-to-1. Just like Edwards, Johnson’s team showed why they are five-time champs. After wrecking their primary car in final practice, the No. 48 team got their back-up off the hauler and set-up in time for Johnson to run the final 20 minutes of practice. They worked on their car making it better in each pit stop and went on to contend for the win until ultimately settling for a runner-up finish.

Bristol had not been one of Johnson’s best tracks, but when they changed to the variable banking it made the track run like a mini-Dover and Johnson excelled. He captured a win in 2010 and has finished no worse than eighth in five of his last six starts.

Johnson has a pretty good car this week as well. In five 2011 starts, the chassis never finished worse than ninth and included runner-up finishes at California and Atlanta.

Matt Kenseth is a two-time Bristol winner, doing so on the old layout. He’s finished in the top-10 in each of his last five Bristol starts with a best of fourth in this race last season. He'll be using a brand new car this week.

Jeff Gordon is a five-time Bristol winner, the last coming in 2002. He’s been competitive on the new layout with three top-5 finishes, including a best of third in the fall race last season.

Tony Stewart has an even larger gap in time from his last win than Gordon does. Stewart thought Bristol was easy after winning in 2001, but since then he’s managed only three top-5 finishes in 20 starts. He was runner-up in 2010, but his last three starts have seen him finish 19th or worse.

Brad Keselowski charged hard for the win last fall and just like Kyle Busch, this track suits his attitude perfect. With all the heat on Kyle Busch from NASCAR and his sponsors, we don’t get to see the true “Rowdy” come out to play anymore, but Keselowski could be that type of villain we like to love and hate at the same time. Here’s to hoping Keselwoski picks a fight Sunday afternoon and shakes some things up in the series.

Top-5 Finish Prediction:
1) #18 Kyle Busch (6/1)
2) #16 Greg Biffle (14/1)
3) #48 Jimmie Johnson (8/1)
4) #17 Matt Kenseth (12/1)
5) # 2 Brad Keselowski (18/1)
