Toyota acknowledges Hendrick Chevrolet engines have 'edge'

Kyle Busch hasn't won a race since Fontana in March
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Toyota Racing Development is continuing to look at ways to produce more horsepower as President David Wilson acknowledged that the Toyotas are behind Hendrick Motorsports in that department.

Wilson said the TRD engines are not as far down in horsepower as Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin indicated after the race Sunday at Michigan when Hamlin in frustration said he had 50 less horsepower.

“We need to be better,” Wilson said Tuesday. “Hands down, the folks over at the Hendrick shop have done a great job this year, and they’ve got an edge, not just on us but the others as well.

“We’re happy with our reliability. The funny thing about the sports, we finished second, third and fourth at the Brickyard (three weeks ago) no less. The past couple of races have been frustrating for us and for the drivers.”

JGR and Michael Waltrip Racing, the two primary Toyota teams, use TRD engines in Cup. Last year, Toyotas won 14 of the 36 races, with JGR winning 12. Through 23 races this year, JGR has won twice and MWR still seeks its first victory.
