In 1971 Charlie Glotzbach captured Chevrolet’s first win at Bristol Motor Speedway, which was also the first NASCAR Cup win for Monte Carlo. With the aid of relief driver, Friday Hassler, the duo clocked an average pace of 101.074 mph throughout the caution-free 500-lap race. That speed record still stands today.

“Yeah, I really enjoy racing at Bristol. I think it’s one of the coolest places we go to just environment wise and then race track wise. Just a lot of fun. Short track racing in general is fun. I’ve enjoyed it. We’ve had some okay runs there. Feel like we had a really good car there last fall and had a realistic shot that I didn’t do a very good job of. I think it’s been kind of hit or miss, it’s hard to get right. You can just be off a little bit one way or the other and it make a big difference there.”

“Bristol is my favorite track. So, obviously you always want to win at your favorite track and thankfully I was able to win at an Xfinity race there last year. After being close there in Xfinity, every time I’ve ran, I finished second in my first ever Xfinity race there. So, I’ve got a ton of seconds and laps led and everything there. So, not being able to get it done makes you want to win that much more and it will make that moment, when you do win, extra special. Hopefully this is the year where it will all come together and we can finally be standing in Victory Lane there in a Cup car.”

“I think you just get that coliseum feel at the Bristol Motor Speedway. It’s called The Last Great Coliseum, and when you walk in you are surrounded by stands and fans. The noise is loud, and you are just in a soup bowl running around there – you get kind of dizzy.
“The biggest thing is: my spotter always tells me “alright, don’t forget we are pitting on the front stretch – it’s the side that has the start/finish line, remember that the backstretch doesn’t.” I’m like, ‘duh,’ I know what side of the track we are on but there are times that drivers pit on the wrong side. They look the same, everything about it is the same. You get going around there and you get into this rhythm and you just kind of get lost.”

I think that will make tire fall-off worse than what we’ve had there in the past, because of what we’re asking out of the tires. The racetrack could get even wider quicker. You always have the variable of how much they spray the bottom groove with the traction compound and how long that lasts. With the corner speeds being so fast, that compound may give up even quicker. There will be a lot going on, but it will be awesome to experience Bristol as a Cup Series driver with Caterpillar and Bass Pro Shops on the side of the No. 8 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.”
