Joey Logano gets second 2020 win in overtime at Phoenix

AVONDALE, Ariz. – Joey Logano expected a bump from Kevin Harvick in the two-lap overtime Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, but the bump never came.

Instead, Harvick pulled up beside Logano in the center of Turns 1 and 2 on the final lap of the FanShield 500, but Logano sped away with a hard charge off Turn 2 and cruised to the finish line with a margin of .276 seconds.

With the victory—his second at Phoenix and the 25^th of his career—Logano is the first multiple winner of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season, having previously taken the checkered flag at Las Vegas in the year’s second event.

Logano won on Sunday at the one-mile track in the Sonoran desert despite snafus that might have thwarted a lesser driver. On Lap 133, Logano’s crew was flagged for an uncontrolled tire, sending the driver of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford to the rear of the field for a restart on Lap 138.

After Logano drove through the field and regained his track position, a broken jack during a yellow-flag pit stop on Lap 268 dropped him to 18^th for a Lap 272 restart. By staying on the track while other lead-lap cars pitted under caution on Lap 279, Logano moved up to third in the running order, and on Lap 293 he passed teammate Brad Keselowski for the lead and took control of the race.

"Man, we had a really good car, really good Shell-Pennzoil Mustang," said Logano, who won for the second time with new crew chief Paul Wolfe after an offseason personnel shakeup at Team Penske. "We had more things go wrong today. Unfortunate situation with the jack breaking. No one's fault.

"Had some good restarts, got ourselves back up there, being aggressive, having some tires there towards the end. I knew racing Kevin was going to be hard. I was figuring I was going to get hit, so I throttled up in the corner so much, I thought he was going to give me the bump-and-run, which I expected, wouldn't blame him for. 

I'm out of breath. That was a pretty intense last 30 minutes or hour of the race. A lot going on. Couldn't be more proud of this team. Two wins already in the books. We’ve got to keep this thing rocking."

With arguably the fastest car in the race, Harvick got bottled up in traffic on the Lap 272 restart and never regained the top spot. Logano controlled the final two restarts, including the overtime, chose the bottom lane and cut the dogleg just beyond the start/finish line to maintain his lead.

"He just had control of the race," Harvick said. "After we pitted there (on Lap 268), I got stuck behind a couple of cars there, lost five or six spots. He got by and got control of the race. He got to restart where he wanted to.

"Our Jimmy John's Ford was better, especially when we could put it in front of his. We just didn't get the control of the race back there, and he was able to get by us on that restart where I got hung up."

Kyle Busch ran third, as NASCAR’s new low-downforce competition package provided lively action throughout the afternoon.

"There at the end, obviously, making up some good spots on the bottom when everybody would get bottled up there mid-pack… but once you get closer to the front, it’s hard to make up those spots anymore on the bottom anymore like we were," Busch said.

"The guys did a great job. We weren’t very good when we unloaded (on Friday), we made a lot of ground, but still not enough ground as I would have wanted to race with some of the top guys. I felt like we were a fifth- or sixth-place car probably, and we were able to come out with a third. Good for us with that effort. We need some points right now. We have to climb the ladder back and get back where we need to be."

Kyle Larson ran fourth, followed by Clint Bowyer and Kurt Busch. Pole winner Chase Elliott led a race-high 93 laps, but his No. 9 Chevrolet was forced to pit road for an unplanned stop under green on Lap 156 because of a loose wheel, and Elliott never recovered. He finished seventh after regaining the lead lap under caution on Lap 195.

Notes: Logano led 60 of 316 laps, fourth most behind Elliott (93) Keselowski (82) and Harvick (67)… There were 12 cautions for 73 laps, the last of which forced the overtime that extended the race by four laps… Ninth-place finisher Cole Custer was the top Sunoco rookie in the race, posting his first career top 10 in the Cup Series… Harvick took over the series lead by one point over Logano… Ryan Blaney, who entered the race as the points leader, was an innocent victim in a Lap 64 wreck involving Denny Hamlin and Keselowski and finished 37^th in the 38-car field, dropping to sixth in the standings… Harvick won the first stage of the race, and Keselowski was the winner of the second stage.

Joey Logano wins Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas second straight year

LAS VEGAS – In a final two-lap scramble that ended with a multicar crash on the frontstretch at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Joey Logano found a way to defend last year’s victory in Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 NASCAR Cup Series race.

Logano sped away after a restart on Lap 266 of 267 and led runner-up Matt DiBenedetto to the finish under caution to win for the second time at Las Vegas, the first time this season and the 24^th time in his career, breaking a tie with Ricky Rudd for 35^th all-time.

Logano was one of seven lead-lap drivers who stayed out on older tires when Ross Chastain’s spin in Turn 2 brought out the eighth caution of the afternoon on Lap 261. That yellow flag changed the complexion of the race. 

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished third, the beneficiary of excellent pit strategy by crew chief Brian Pattie. Austin Dillon ran fourth, and Jimmie Johnson came home fifth, the highest finisher among drivers who pitted for fresh tires under the eighth caution. The top-five run was Johnson’s first since he ran third at Daytona in July of last year.

But it was Logano who celebrated in Victory Lane after taking the white flag with cars crashing behind him as he started the final lap. Interestingly, because of accidents and pit strategy, the two drivers with whom the driver of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford battled for much of the race—teammate Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott—weren’t in the mix at the finish.

After running solidly in the top 10 in the third stage, DiBenedetto, whose Wood Brothers team is affiliated with Penske, was right there at the end, matching his career-best finish in his second ride with his new team.

"I'm not really sure what I was supposed to do (on the last pit call), but, boy, we fought hard for this one today," Logano said. "Man, what a battle between Blaney and I and Chase Elliott and the 19 (Martin Truex Jr.) earlier in the race, and then to see this finish with Matt finishing second is great day for Wood Brothers and for Team Penske.

"Man, nothing like winning the Pennzoil 400 in front of this amazing crowd with this awesome yellow car right here in the front.  Man, this is a huge win, and nice to kick off the season with a ‘W.’"

A push from Stenhouse on the final restart gave Logano the space he needed to pull away.

"You get a good start like that, and I watched him, he pushed me and then he shoved me ahead, which was great, and then the block on the 24 (William Byron), that was the winning move, I was able to get down in front of him and then be able to separate myself a little bit from the field.

"Clean air was going to be key with old tires. If I got swallowed up by a couple cars, I was just going to fall backwards really quick. Being able to get that clean air, secure that.  Man, this is great getting back in Victory Lane."

DiBenedetto took the second spot after he and Byron made contact on the restart. Suffering from a tire rub on his No. 24 Chevrolet, Byron fell back to 22^nd during the melee on the penultimate lap.

"This is all just too surreal," DiBenedetto said. "Tough to be that close, but, hey, this is only the second race of the season. So it was the strength of this team. It's so cool to have the backing of all the people that allow me to drive this thing."

Kevin Harvick, whose cars had excellent short-run speed, led a race-high 92 laps but finished eighth after taking tires under the decisive caution. Elliott was out front for 70 circuits and Logano had the point for 54. 

Elliott won the first two stages but finished 26^th after spinning into the Turn 1 wall with a flat left rear tire on Lap 220.

It's Penske Time in Las Vegas

Joey Logano won last spring at LVMS.

For local NASCAR fans, one of their favorite days of the year comes a couple of weeks early.

Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s 1.5-mile high-banked layout will be the second race of the season and 25th NASCAR Cup race at LVMS since debuting in 1998. It’s the start of the West Coast swing with the series traveling to Fontana next week, then Phoenix .

The series comes to town on a short week after Denny Hamlin won his third Daytona 500 on Monday following a rain delay on Sunday and a frightful finish when Ryan Newman had a horrific crash and was hospitalized.

Joey Logano is the defending champion and will be driving for Roger Penske racing, which has three drivers in the race. And while winning the Las Vegas race is priority No. 1 for every team, it’s also a time to enjoy the city.

“Vegas is always a popular spot on the schedule and I enjoy it,” said four-time Las Vegas winner Jimmie Johnson. “We usually do a really cool night bike ride in the Henderson area and there is always something entertainment-wise in Vegas.”

This will be Johnson’s last full season in the Cup Series and LVMS plans on doing something special for the seven-time champ in the South Point 400 fall race. It’s been an amazing run with 83 wins and been a pleasure watching excellence in a sport like never seen before in this tougher more competitive era of NASCAR.

Dover Betting Preview: 750 HP package in effect for fifth time in 2019

For the second straight week, the NASCAR Cup Series visits a race track celebrating its 50th anniversary. Last week it was the monstrous Talladega Superspeedway. This week it's Dover International Speedway, the high-banked, 1-mile concrete layout known as the Monster Mile.

Sunday's race will be the 99th Cup race held at Dover. It will also be the 11th race of the season and fifth race using the race package with an engine producing 750 horsepower and no aero ducts. The four previous races using this package were at Phoenix, Martinsville, Bristol, and Richmond with a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota winning three of them and a Team Penske Mustang driven by Brad Keselowski dominating at Martinsville. A Chevrolet only had two top-five finishes combined between the four races. JGR had nine, Penske had six and Stewart-Haas Racing had three, one of which was Clint Bowyer who was third at Richmond three weeks ago.

“Dover is always a cool track that I think every driver looks forward to because it’s a driver’s track," said Bowyer who was runner-up last spring at Dover. "You’ve got to man up, get on top of that wheel and make things happen. There are just so many things going on there on that concrete surface and high banks. It’s a lot of fun. If you win there, you’ve earned it.”

Bowyer is posted at 12/1 odds at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook and while he's never won a Cup race at Dover, he does have two Xfinity Series wins. There's a feeling from a few NASCAR minds I respect that the SHR Mustangs are going to be next to join the winner's circle after Chevrolet finally joined the party last week.

Bowyer's teammate Kevin Harvick won this race last year to give him four wins on the season. He dominated both races last season finishing first in both stages of each and leading 452 laps combined. He was sixth in the fall. Harvick just hasn't looked comfortable with the new package and it was evident right out of the gate at Phoenix, a track he's dominated at with different packages, teams and manufacturers in the past when he finished ninth and couldn't hold his usual line. However, in the last race using this package at Richmond he led 30 laps and finished fourth.

The SuperBook thinks highly of Harvick this week and posted him as the second choice to win at 4/1 odds. He's won two of the past seven races at Dover.

Last season Kurt Busch drove the SHR No. 41 to two fifth-place finishes at Dover and Daniel Suarez takes over with it being his best track averaging a 6.7 finish between four starts while driving for JGR.

“Dover is probably my favorite track and it’s probably my best track, too,” said Suarez who the Superbook posted at 50-to-1 odds. “I’m not really sure why it’s so good for me, but it’s a lot of fun. With the new package, it should be crazy fast, so it’s going to be a lot of fun, I hope. I always have it marked on my list of tracks that I think we have a really good shot to win at. Kevin and Clint were both so good there last year and my crew chief Billy Scott and the 41 team were really good there last year, too.”

Both Bowyer and Suarez had top-10 finishes at Bristol last month with this package. While Dover is unique to itself, I have seen correlations in performances over the same season with Bristol's half-mile, high banked concrete layout. Suarez's best finish in the Cup Series was third in this race last season and he also won an Xfinity Series race there in 2016. It's a good track for Suarez and he's worth throwing $5 on at 50/1 odds.

Sitting atop the SuperBook's odds board is Kyle Busch as the 3/1 favorite. He's got three wins at Dover in the Cup series, five wins in Xfinity Series and four wins in the Truck Series. It's obvious that he's fond of the concrete layout.

“I love that place," said Busch. "It’s fun to race there and it’s a place I’m looking forward to going to with our PEDIGREE Camry. I went there when I was 18 to race in the Xfinity Series for my first time. It will scare you the first time you race there. You carry so much speed at that racetrack and, for it to be a mile in length and for it to be concrete – concrete surfaces that we race on, anyway – are a little bit slick.

"It’s definitely a rollercoaster ride and you need to treat it like it’s fun and not to be scared of the place, I think because you can get so much out of that place. There are two ways about it – you can probably be really, really good there, or really, really bad there. Some days are going to be better than others, obviously, with how you can get your car set up compared to the competition.”

So far in 2019, there have been no bad days for Busch. He leads the Cup Series in points on the basis of top-10 finishes in all 10 races this season, which includes three wins, two of which came using the 750 HP package at Phoenix and Bristol.

The Gibbs cars, minus Erk Jones, have all had success using this race package. Denny Hamlin has finished fifth in all four races and Martin Truex Jr. finished second at Phoenix and won at Richmond after leading a race-high 186 laps.

Truex at 8/1 odds might be someone to key on this week and not just because he won the last race featuring the 750 HP package. This is the home track for the Mayetta, New Jersey native and he's been great at it from the beginning of his NASCAR career with back-to-back Xfinity Series wins in 2004 and 2005. He won his first career Cup race at Dover in 2007. He won there again in 2016 and since then has finished third, fourth, fourth and 15th. He probably should have at least two more wins because he had the best car in both 2017 races.

Logano holds off Keselowski to win Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas

Joey Logano paid out 8/1 at the Las Vegas sports books.

Joey Logano made it two Cup wins in a row for Team Penske, leading 86 laps to win Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

It was Logano’s first win at the 1.5-mile oval in 12 career tries and the 22nd victory of his Cup career.

Logano held off teammate and race runner-up Brad Keselowski, who won last week’s race at Atlanta, followed by Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch.

“What a great race, Brad and I were so evenly matched,” Logano said to Fox Sports. “The way the draft is, you just can’t drive away. In the last 5-6 laps, Brad was catching me so quick and I got stuck behind a lapped car. To be so close and get it at the end there, it was fun.

“Team Penske 1-2, it shows the speed we have. We had a lot of speed last week and Brad was able to get it (the win). And this week he finished second. What a great day for Team Penske.”

Added Keselowski, “I’d like to have one more lap. It was a good battle. We were both fighting hard.”
