Nigel Lamb favored to win 2014 Red Bull Air Race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

New series to bet on. Are you ready?
LAS VEGAS – In recent years, we've seen Las Vegas sports books offer the first odds on events such as NFR and PBR rodeo, PBA bowling, NHRA drag racing, U.S. Open surfing, and Harvard-Oxford rowing. This weekend, we have a new first: odds on the Red Bull Air Race World Championship.

Yes, it's airplane racing, where the world's best pilots battle it out in between 82-foot pylons at speeds up to 230 mph.

MGM Resorts sports books posted Nigel Lamb as the 2-to-1 favorite among 12 pilots vying to compete in Sunday's Master Class Finals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The first question we want the answer to is how in the world do oddsmakers come up with Lamb as the favorite.

"I just looked at the final results from this season so far, and last year as well," said race and sports vice-president Jay Rood from his Mirage office. "I think there have been six races so far, and Lamb had performed very well in all those, better than the rest. I got some insight from for the PR people (at Red Bull Air Race) as well, but mostly used the data from all those races and placed them accordingly, like we might do like for any sport."

Las Vegas is the second U.S. city on the eight-city world tour. Rood said Nicolas Ivanoff won at the Texas Motor Speedway event and is posted at 9-to-2 odds this week. He also compared fourth-rated pilot Pete McLeod (6/1) to NASCAR driver Ryan Newman saying, "He qualifies well, but it doesn't translate over to race day for him."
