Kevin Harvick looking to get out front at Martinsville

Kevin Harvick is 6-to-1 co-favorite to win at Martinsville.
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Oct. 28, 2015) – Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 4 Outback Steakhouse Chevrolet SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), knows the name of the game this time of year is to survive and advance to the next and final round of NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup. The three races on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule that make up the Eliminator Round, starting with Sunday’s Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, are aligned in a way that might have Harvick “bloomin’” at the right time.

The defending series champion raced his way from the Challenger Round through to the Contender Round with a dominant performance in a “must-win” situation at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. He fought off elimination by dominating the race at Dover, where he led 355 of 400 laps to score his first Chase win of the season. In the Contender Round, Harvick finished second at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, 16th at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City and 15th last Sunday at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway to advance to the Eliminator Round.

The next three tracks he’ll visit for the Eliminator Round – Martinsville, Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth and Phoenix International Raceway – line up well for Harvick and the No. 4 team.

Harvick has been victorious at two of the next three racetracks, including an April 2011 win at Martinsville, where he led six laps and battled Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the closing laps to score the win by .727 seconds. Harvick has yet to score a Sprint Cup victory at Texas but has back-to-back second place finishes and has led 98 laps is his last two starts at the 1.5-mile oval. He has scored seven Sprint Cup wins at Phoenix, including five of his last six starts at the mile oval.

Thirty-two races into this season, Harvick has been a model of consistency as he has 20 top-five finishes, and he’s also led a series-high 2,056 laps with an average finish of 9.3.

Harvick is the first driver to lead 2,000 laps in consecutive seasons since Jeff Gordon in 1995 and 1996. The last three drivers to lead more than 2,000 laps in a single season have all gone on to win the Sprint Cup championship. Jeff Gordon led 2,320 laps in 2001, Jimmie Johnson led 2,238 laps in 2009, and Harvick led 2,137 laps in 2014.

The reigning Sprint Cup champion leads several other statistical categories: 118.1 driver rating, 44 bonus points, 1,241 fastest laps run, 32.3 percent of fastest laps run, 22.6 percent of laps led, 2,503.12 miles led, 8,224 laps in the top-15 and average running position of 7.549.

Outback Steakhouse has celebrated Harvick’s 24 top-10 finishes thus far in 2015 by giving its customers a free Bloomin’ Onion® on the Monday immediately following the race. And while he’d like to continue those celebrations this weekend by scoring another top-10, he’d prefer to do it in a bigger way – by winning his fourth Sprint Cup race of the 2015 season and automatically advancing to the winner-take-all Championship Round at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

KEVIN HARVICK, Driver of the No. 4 Outback Steakhouse Chevrolet SS for Stewart-Haas Racing:

What are your thoughts on the next three races that make up the Eliminator Round of the Chase?

“These next three races line up really well for us. We’ve been fortunate to have won at Martinsville before and we ran really well there the first race (this season). The 1.5-mile tracks have been our bread and butter and Phoenix has been really good pretty much every single time we’ve been there. First, it was just trying to get to Martinsville and we accomplished that. Now, we have to focus on getting the best finish we can out of each racetrack. I guess, if I’d have to pick one that we’ve been most successful at, it would be Phoenix hands down. But our 1.5-mile stuff has been exceptional this year as we’ve gone through the season, so that should be good. And, Martinsville has been good to us in the past.”

Where do you need to be and when to position yourself best for a win at these next three tracks?
“I think the best position to be in at any racetrack is in the lead. You want to be in control of the race and try to get yourself in a position to where you can have a good clean restart and have as much clear track, especially at Martinsville, just for the fact that there is so much pushing and shoving on the restarts to get to the bottom lane that you want to try to be as far forward as possible.”

2015 Chase Outlook heading into Eliminator Round at Martinsville

Okay, so maybe Joey Logano is the next best thing. Three straight is pretty darn good.

Five co-favorites posted for Martinsville

Hamlin is always a contender at Martinsville.
LAS VEGAS -- Five drivers have been posted by the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook as 6-to-1 co-favorites to win Sunday's Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville Speedway, which is showing all kinds of respect to two of those drivers, Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick. You see, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin have combined to win 21 times on the flat half-mile layout. Logano has never won at Martinsville, and Harvick has only one win there in 28 starts.

So what gives? Why so much respect for Logano and Harvick this time around?

For starters, Logano is going for his fourth straight win. He swept through the Contender Round of the Chase like nothing we’ve seen before, and last week’s win came when he had a target on his back as some veterans eyed retaliation at Talladega. Johnson is the last driver to win four straight races (2007), and he accomplished the feat during the Chase (Martinsville was one of the wins). While Logano has never won at Martinsville, he's had three straight top-five finishes there and also led five times for 108 laps in the May 29 race.

Martinsville Notes

No one better at Martinsville than Gordon.
NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES
Joey Checkers: Logano Takes Down Talladega For Third Straight Win
Joey Logano took the checkered flag at Talladega to sweep the Contender Round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup with his third consecutive win. The No. 22 Team Penske driver now leads the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series with six wins and 26 top 10s – both career highs. He also ranks tied with Kevin Harvick for the most top fives with 20, also a career-best total.
In Sunday’s Goody’s Headache Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway (1:15 p.m. ET on NBCSN), Logano will attempt to become the first driver to win four straight races since Jimmie Johnson achieved the feat in the 2007 Chase when he visited Victory Lane at Martinsville, Atlanta, Texas and Phoenix on his way to his second of six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships.
Logano has never won an NSCS race at Martinsville, but has finished in the top five in his last three starts at the Virginia short track.
The 25-year-old Connecticut native is the second driver to win three consecutive races this year after Kyle Busch pulled off the achievement by conquering Kentucky, New Hampshire and Indianapolis. The last time two different drivers won three straight races in a season was 1993 when Rusty Wallace and Mark Martin did it.
Father Time: Gordon Goes For Ninth Martinsville Clock
Jeff Gordon has to love his position in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup now.
He heads to Martinsville Speedway – arguably his best track – where a win automatically advances him to the Championship Round of the Chase at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Gordon is tied with Jimmie Johnson for the active wins lead at Martinsville with eight checkered flags – a total that is also his most at any track. The No. 24 Chevrolet driver boasts series bests in average finish (6.9), average running position (6.7) and average green flag speed (91.7 mph) at Martinsville.
Last season, Gordon finished second at Martinsville to Dale Earnhardt Jr., a race in which he led a race-high 130 laps.
Although he squeaked into the Chase on points and still doesn’t have a win, Gordon is building up some momentum in NASCAR’s playoffs. He placed in the top 10 of all three Contender Round races.
JGR Chasers Hope Organization Has Unlocked Secret To The Paperclip
Kyle Busch didn’t seem worried that he hasn’t performed up to his expectations at Martinsville heading into Sunday’s Eliminator Round opener.
"I wouldn’t have said that I felt comfortable at Martinsville based off how we ran there last year," said Busch, who has never won at the .526-mile track. "But the way the guys at Joe Gibbs Racing ran this spring, everybody ran in the top five, so it was really a good race. I’m looking forward to getting back and utilizing some of that in order to have a good race and maybe do what Denny (Hamlin) did and win one here."
JGR placed three drivers in the top five at Martinsville in the spring (Denny Hamlin, first; Matt Kenseth, fourth; David Ragan, fifth). Carl Edwards finished 17th, but led 13 laps and looked like a contender for the win before a late-race spin.
With wins in nine of the 12 races leading into the Contender Round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, JGR had aspirations of advancing all four of its drivers to the Championship Round at Homestead. That can no longer happen; Busch and Edwards are JGR’s only drivers still in the Chase after Hamlin and Kenseth were knocked out at Talladega.
Busch and Edwards better hope that JGR figured out Martinsville this spring. Busch has been boom-or-bust at The Paperclip with eight top fives in 20 starts, but also has 11 finishes outside the top 10. In 22 Martinsville starts, Edwards has posted only one top five and five top 10s.
Stayin’ Alive: SHR’s Harvick And Busch Remain Standing In Chase
The two dominant drivers at the beginning of the year – Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch – remain alive in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Both Harvick and Busch are strong bets to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series title, too.
As the defending champion, Harvick knows how to handle the pressure of the Chase format. A win in the next three events gets a driver a free pass to the Championship Round race at Homestead, which is great news for Harvick. He is practically automatic at Phoenix where he has won the last four races.
Busch has won at all four of the remaining tracks and cannot be counted out either.  He and Jeff Gordon are the only Chase drivers who have visited Victory Lane at the final four ovals (Martinsville, Texas Phoenix, Homestead).
Short Track Showdown
Martinsville Speedway serves as the only short track in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. If a Chase driver wins at Martinsville, he gains a distinct advantage over the field because his team can focus on preparing for the Championship Round at Homestead.
Here’s how the Chase-eligible drivers rank in winning percentage at short tracks:
Kyle Busch – .145 win pct., 9 wins, 62 starts
Jeff Gordon – .110 win pct., 16 wins, 145 starts
Kurt Busch – .100 win pct., 9 wins, 90 starts
Brad Keselowski – .083 win pct., 3 wins, 36 starts
Joey Logano – .073 win pct., 3 wins, 41 starts
Carl Edwards – .059 win pct., 4 wins, 68 starts
Kevin Harvick – .057 win pct., 5 wins, 88 starts
Martin Truex Jr. – .000 win pct., 0 wins, 59 starts
Watch Out for ‘Spoilers’ At Martinsville
Chase-eligible drivers aren’t the only competitors who can win at Martinsville on Sunday. Last season, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was the first "spoiler" in NASCAR’s playoffs when he won for the first time at the Southern Virginia track to block a transfer spot.
In fact, many of the favorites on Sunday are not in the Chase. Past Martinsville winners set to race on Sunday are Jimmie Johnson (8 wins, tied for the active lead), Denny Hamlin (5, spring winner), Tony Stewart (3), Earnhardt (1) and Ryan Newman (1).

The Chasers who have never won at Martinsville are Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Carl Edwards and Martin Truex Jr.

 1. Dale Earnhardt Jr. 9/2        23rd                3rd              5th              1st
Six-time winner; only controls own Chase destiny by winning. He's won past two plate races. He's using same winning chassis from May race.
 2. Brad Keselowski 15/1        19th                 1st               11th           22nd
Three-time winner, including this race to advance in 2014; clinches by finishing second or better.
 3. Jimmie Johnson 7/1           36th                9th                3rd             2nd
Two-time winner; finished second in past two plate races. Out of Chase, but will be very fast.
 4. Kevin Harvick 12/1              18th                6th                 7th            8th
2010 winner, ninth or better past three starts; clinches by finishing 4th and leading a lap.
 5. Jeff Gordon 12/1                  17th              10th                 1st            31st
All-time leader with 12 plate wins, including six at Talladega; clinches by finishing second.
 6. Denny Hamlin 12/1             15th              DNP                 8th            9th
2014 winner; can play it cool and watch what everyone else is doing -- clinches with 14th-place.
 7. Matt Kenseth 10/1              13th              DNP                 4th            25th
2012 winner and in most desperate situation of all Chase drivers -- needs a win to advance.
 8. Kasey Kahne 12/1                  5th                5th                 2nd           34th
Two-time runner-up; never won a plate race before but he's got a real fast Hendrick Chevrolet.
 9. Kurt Busch 15/1                    24th                7th               12th           14th
Might be the best plate racer to never win with one on; clinches with an eighth-place finish.
10. Paul Menard 35/1              10th               13th                 3rd            13th
Evolved into quite the 'Dega racer lately with finishes of fourth, sixth and third in past four.

This is the final race of the Contender Round in Chase. Eight drivers will advance to the Eliminator Round and four will be eliminated.

* Results from the May 3 Geico 500 at Talladega.

Note: Practice times on restrictor-plate tracks mean less to a rating than all other types. Only 30 drivers participated in the final session for fear of damaging their cars when nothing can really be gained that they don't already know.
