Paul Menard with last chance at Chase at Richmond

Paul Menard is 100/1 to win at Richmond
Paul Menard
No. 27 SYLVANIA/Menards Chevrolet SS
Event Preview Fact Sheet

This Week’s SYLVANIA / Menards Chevrolet at Richmond International Raceway
… Paul Menard will utilize chassis No. 485 during the 300-mile event at Richmond International Raceway. This No. 27 Chevrolet SS is a brand new Richard Childress Racing chassis and will make its first on-track laps during Friday’s first practice session at 9 a.m. Eastern Time.

Richmond by the numbers … The Eau Claire, Wisc. driver has 15 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts at the .75-mile track. His best start of seventh came in September 2010 and best finish of fifth came in September 2013. Menard has one top-five finish and one top-10 finish at RIR. He’s completed 5,895 of 6,016 laps (98%) and led four laps.

About SYLVANIA: Innovation at its Brightest … OSRAM SYLVANIA is a leader in lighting solutions and services, specializing in innovative design and energy saving technology. The company sells products for homes, businesses and vehicles primarily under the SYLVANIA brand name, and also under the OSRAM brand. Headquartered in Danvers, Mass., OSRAM SYLVANIA is the North American operation of OSRAM GmbH. For more information, visit www.sylvania.com.

Season-to-date … Through 25 Sprint Cup Series races of the 2014 season, Menard has completed 6,809 of 6,956 laps contested (97.9 percent), led 45 laps and is currently 14th in the driver point standings. In addition, the RCR driver has four top-five and 11 top-10 finishes this season.

Last time in Richmond … The Slugger Labbe-led team started April’s 400-lap event in the ninth position. Menard would race in the top 15 for the majority of the race before a late-race issue sent him down pit road. The No. 27 Chevrolet team would battle back from a lap down to finish on the lead lap and record a 24th-place finish.

PAUL MENARD QUOTE:

It’s going to be a lot more intense at Richmond International Raceway with guys trying to make the Chase.

“Yeah, it’s the last opportunity to make it in to the Chase. It’s going to be crazy like it always is with short-track racing under the lights with a lot at stake. It’s going to be exciting.”

Tell me about driving this track. Everybody says it’s unique but it’s also comparable to Phoenix International Raceway or Iowa Speedway.
“It’s unique for sure. I’ve only raced Iowa once or twice and it’s really sort of boring compared to Richmond, which is multi-grooved and the tires fall off which is really good. You can bolt on tires at the end and pass cars. It really opens up strategy a little bit. You have to get the front end working, but it seems more and more lately with the way the cars are it’s “drive off” you need. The trick is you have to get your car to turn also.”

Is RIR much different at night than it is during the day?
“Yeah, we practice during the day with really long sessions then we race at night, so it’s a lot of predicting what your car is going to do at night. It changes a little bit; it generally gains more grip but doesn’t really get tighter or looser. You gain some grip which then goes away because you’re doing longer runs. There’s not a whole lot we change from day to night.”

NASCAR.com has $100,000 Sprint Cup Chase promotion going for fans

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (September 2, 2014) – Do you think you can predict the perfect Chase for the NASCAR Sprint CupTM grid? Beginning Sunday, September 7 on NASCAR.com, sports fans everywhere will have a chance to do just that: fill out a perfect Chase Grid™ – from the Challenger Round, which begins at Chicagoland Speedway®, to the Championship Round at Homestead-Miami SpeedwaySM – for a chance to win $100,000.

Filling out the PERFECT CHASE GRID CHALLENGE will be easy. Once the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup field is set following the Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway® (Saturday, Sept. 6, 7:30 p.m. ET, ABC), fans will be able to log on to www.NASCAR.com/grid and make their predictions on how they think NASCAR’s brand new playoff system will transpire.

“Everyone loves making predictions. The new Chase Grid games on NASCAR.com are going to give sports fans an interactive way to engage directly with the brand new Chase format,” said Colin Smith, managing director, NASCAR Digital Media. “If competing against friends and fellow fans isn’t motivation enough, there will also be chances to win some great prizes for those entrants who prove to be the most accurate.”

Entrants can achieve the “perfect grid” by accurately selecting each driver who will advance through the different stages of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. They will also need to accurately predict the four drivers who will compete in the Championship Round at Homestead-Miami Speedway, including who will be the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion™ and the finishing positions of the remaining three drivers relative to each other.

NASCAR.com will also offer a round-by-round game called CHASE GRID BATTLE. Entrants will still predict which drivers they think will advance, but one round at a time. Points will be accumulated based on the number of correct picks and the correct ranking amongst advancing drivers. Prizes will be awarded to four individual round winners, as well as the top three overall.

The Chase Grid games will be open for registration until 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, Sept. 14 when the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup begins at Chicagoland Speedway (2 p.m. ET, ESPN). Both games were designed and built in conjunction with NASCAR Digital Media partner Omnigon, the New York-based digital consulting firm.

For more information and rules on the PERFECT CHASE GRID CHALLENGE and the CHASE GRID BATTLE, log on towww.NASCAR.com/grid.

Winning at Richmond is only way to make Chase for a few

Ryan Newman stands a good chance of making Chase easily
HAMPTON, Ga. — With one race left, there are only two spots available for the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Fourteen drivers are locks in the new 16-driver Chase, where the regular-season champ gets an automatic bid and the final 15 spots are available to top-30 drivers based on wins, then points. Drivers must attempt to qualify or race each weekend to be eligible or get a waiver, as Tony Stewart has gotten.

Thirteen drivers have wins and, as long as they show up Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway, are in the Chase by virtue of being locked into the top 30:

Five are three-race winners: Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson.

Two are two-race winners: Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick.

Six are one-race winners: Kasey Kahne, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Aric Almirola and AJ Allmendinger.

That means there will be two or three spots available based on points.

One driver has clinched a spot on points: Matt Kenseth.

There are four drivers who could possibly get in on points if they don’t win: Ryan Newman, Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer and Kyle Larson.

Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Clinch Scenarios for Richmond

Greg Biffle controls his own destiny
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 1, 2014) – With his win at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday night, Kasey Kahne became the 13th winner of the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season – and the 13th member of the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

Matt Kenseth finished second at Atlanta, and though winless, has accumulated enough points throughout the regular season to guarantee himself a spot in the Chase.

Fourteen Chase spots are now taken, assuming those 14 drivers all attempt to qualify at Richmond.

Two berths remain.

Here are the Chase clinch scenarios for Saturday night’s race at Richmond International Raceway, the regular season finale (7:30 p.m. ET on ABC, MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

If there is a repeat winner, three winless drivers would make the Chase – one of which would be Kenseth. If there is a new winner, two winless drivers would make the Chase – one would be Kenseth (if Kenseth is not the new winner).

Any current winless driver who wins at Richmond, and is in the top 30 in the NASCAR Sprint Cup driver points standings, clinches a spot in the Chase.

Only Ryan Newman controls his own destiny, no matter who wins at Richmond. If there is a repeat 2014 winner (or a Kenseth victory), Newman is guaranteed a spot in the Chase if he finishes 41st or better; or 42nd with at least one lap led; or 43rd and the most laps led. If there is a new winner (that is not Kenseth), Newman is guaranteed a Chase spot with a finish of 18th or better; 19th and at least one lap led; or 20th and the most laps led.

Greg Biffle controls his own destiny if there is a repeat winner. If there is a repeat 2014 winner (or if Kenseth or Newman win), Biffle is guaranteed a spot in the Chase if he finishes 22nd or better; or 23rd with at least one lap led; or 24th and the most laps led. If there is a new winner (that is not Kenseth or Newman), Biffle needs to out-point Newman by 19 points and stay ahead of Clint Bowyer and Kyle Larson.

Clint Bowyer and Kyle Larson are the only other two drivers who can clinch a spot in the Chase without a victory.

The following drivers can only make the Chase with a win at Richmond (and a top-30 spot in the standings): Paul Menard, Austin Dillon, Jamie McMurray, Brian Vickers, Marcos Ambrose, Casey Mears, Martin Truex Jr., Tony Stewart, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Danica Patrick, Justin Allgaier, Michael Annett, David Gilliland, David Ragan and Cole Whitt.
