LVH makes Kyle Larson and Clint Bowyer 5/2 favorites to win 2014 Sprint Showdown

Danica figures to advance to All-Star Race
LAS VEGAS -- There is $1 million up for grabs in Saturday night’s NASCAR All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but participation is limited. So far, only 19 drivers have been invited, with two of the remaining three spots issued to the first two finishers in the Sprint Showdown qualifying race, and the last going to the winner of the fan vote.

All 23 drivers entered for the Sprint Showdown went winless in 2013-14, and this 40-lap event will be light at the top. There seems to be a limited number of cars with a chance to win, which is why Kyle Larson and Clint Bowyer open as the LVH SuperBook’s 5-to-2 co-favorites to win it.

Larson has been a superstar in every practice and qualifying session run on 1.5-mile tracks this season. His two top-five finishes (Fontana and Texas) have come on the big horsepower tracks, and since he‘ll likely have the best car in this race, advancement to the All-Star Race seems probable. He is definitely the driver to beat.

Bowyer hasn’t been a factor to win on any of the down-force tracks this season, but he did have his best practice sessions of 2014 at Kansas last week. The Kansas Speedway layout is much flatter than Charlotte, but speed is speed, which is why he draws co-favorite status with Larson, who has been much more impressive on these type of tracks.

After them, Paul Menard is 7-to-1, followed by Aric Almirola and Austin Dillon 8-to-1. The Richard Petty stable has been fast on these types of tracks during practices, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Almirola – or teammate Marcos Ambrose (12/1) – pull off a semi-upset. Menard and Dillon haven't been as good on these tracks for Richard Childress Racing as the program was in 2013.

Danica Patrick is 12-to-1, and the price is that low because of what she did at Kansas last week. En route to a career-best seventh-place finish, she passed Kansas’ best, Jimmie Johnson, in the later stages while both were racing in the top 10. It was here first real coming-out party, and something everyone needed to see out of her.

Even if she doesn’t finish in the first two positions, her popularity will probably get here the last invite to the All-Star Race.

Patrick won the fan vote last season. This time around, though, she’ll have a new fan base to contend with as the No. 3 RCR car might evoke memories and prompt fans to vote Dillon in. He started the season with a bang by being on the pole at Daytona, but he’s been a quiet non-contender since. It certainly doesn’t look like the same car that Kevin Harvick drove last season to four wins, even though everything from that No. 29 team transferred to Dillon’s No. 3 garage this year.

Dillon’s still in a major learning curve, but he’s stayed out of trouble and is 14th in points. Nothing worse than a rookie getting in the way, and Dillon has come with total respect and reverence for where he’s at right now and for the legacy of the car number Dale Earnhardt made so famous.

Martin Truex Jr. a Prohibitive Favorite to Win Sprint Showdown

Martin Truex Jr. finished second at Texas, the sister track of Charlotte.
LAS VEGAS -- The LVH SuperBook has installed Martin Truex Jr. as the overwhelming 9-to-5 favorite to win Saturday's Sprint Showdown at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Showdown is a 40-lap qualifying event that gives the top two finishers a chance to compete for $1 million in the Sprint All-Star Race that follows.

The runner-up advances to the big race, but does not cash at the sports books; only the winner gets the money.

You could make a good argument that Truex Jr. should be listed as one of the favorites to win the All-Star race should he advance. Charlotte's 1.5-mile high-banked track is similar to Texas, where Truex Jr. finished second to Kyle Busch in April. You can throw the other 1.5-mile tracks into the equation as well and see that he finished eighth in Las Vegas and fourth at Kansas. Only Truex Jr. and Jimmie Johnson have finished eighth or better on all three 1.5-mile tracks run on this season.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Jamie McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya are all listed next at 9-to-2, followed by Paul Menard at 5-to-1 and Aric Almirola at 8-to-1.

The Earnhardt-Ganassi duo of McMurray and Montoya seems to have made major strides in the Gen-6 car over the past four races. They have found some speed, and it's showing not only in practice, but on race day as well. Menard finished 10th at both Las Vegas and Kansas, while Almirola was seventh at Texas.

An interesting look at 20-to-1 is Jeff Burton. He doesn't have a quality finish in any of the three 1.5-mile tracks this season, but he does have the Richard Childress resources backing him. Burton's teammates, Menard and Kevin Harvick, have run very consistently on this type of track this year. Burton also has three wins at Charlotte over his career, the last coming in the 2008 Coca-Cola 600.

NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race Preview: $1 Million Purse + No Points at Stake = EXCITEMENT

By Micah Roberts
VegasInsider.com

With over $1 Million at stake and no points n the line, look out! (Getty)
After traveling back and forth across the country since February, the NASCAR Sprint Cup teams get to sleep in their own beds for the next three weeks at home in Charlotte where most of the teams are headquartered. However, It doesn’t mean they get the next three weeks off from racing because they have two important races held at Charlotte Motor Speedway before heading to Dover in June.

This Saturday night is the NASCAR All-Star race, a night filled with two races that have races within each race with the winner getting over $1 million. Then on Memorial day weekend the drivers will race in the Coca-Cola 600.

The difference in the type racing between the two weekends are about as extreme as Talladega is to Martinsville, even though they are both held on the same track. With the All-Star race you have drivers trying to win at all costs with total disregard for their cars and point standings because there are no points, it's basically an exhibition race. Whereas in the Coca-Cola, it’s all about the points and trying to finish well and stay out of trouble.

There’s also the big difference in the purse. Last years Coca-Cola 600 winner, Kevin Harvick, won $406,786 for taking the checkers which is in stark contrast to the $1.2 million Carl Edwards won for taking the All-Star race a week earlier. Needless to say, it pays to be reckless and let it all hang out this week and because of that mentality it is one of the most anticipated races of the season.

“Our All-Star race is a lot different than other sports," Harvick said earlier this week. "With the All-Star race they put a million dollars in front of you. Anytime they put that much money in front of anybody it’s going to cause things to rise to another level. Take the points away from that and you really have some unique scenarios that come up. It’s always fun when you know there is really nothing on the line but to win. If you do, then usually there is a big check waiting for you at the end so that gives you some bragging rights and a lot of money.”

Fans don’t care about points until the Chase comes around, and even then the points are secondary to rooting for their own driver to win that day. The All-Star race brings out the spirit in drivers that fans wish they saw in every race and a $1 million dangling carrot in front of each driver’s windshield is just enough to give them the show they want.

“It seems that teams are always willing to take more risks and try new things when it comes to the All-Star race simply because there aren’t any points associated with this race," said Matt Kenseth, winner of the 2004 All-Star race. "The All-Star race is just a lot of fun because there are a bunch of neat events that lead into the weekend including the Pit Crew Challenge and then having to qualify with a pit stop on Friday. Everyone is chasing the big check at the end of the race and I’m looking forward to having Fifth Third Bank on our car for this weekend for their first Cup race.”

The format of the race is broken down into two events: The Sprint Showdown is a 40-lap preliminary dash for all drivers that don’t meet the qualifications for the All-Star race. The first and second-place drivers from that race will get invited into the big event that has all the big names everyone wants to see without any jalopies getting in their way. Then the fans get to vote in one more driver who didn’t finish in the top-2, known as the Dale Earnhardt Jr rule to some, which gives us 23 total drivers to begin the All-Star race.

The criteria to automatically qualify for the All-Star race is drivers who have won in the current or preceding year, drivers who have won the Sprint Cup title in the last 10 years, or drivers who have won an All-Star race the last 10 years. The race itself consists of four 20-lap segments, concluding with a final 10-lap sprint. In that 10-lap sprint, the winners from each of the first four segments will be placed up front in starting positions 1-4. This is a new wrinkle in this years event to entice drivers to try and race even harder during each of the segments to get the prime position in the final dash, and more importantly, have a much better chance at winning $1 million.

It would be a shock if the one of the four first four drivers starting up front didn't win in that final 10-lap dash.

To get a better read on who might fare the best this week, we should take a look at what happened in Las Vegas and Texas which are both sister tracks of Charlotte. Texas and Charlotte are probably the most similar as far as required set-ups go.

The driver at the top of the list begins with Greg Biffle who won at Texas and finished third in Las Vegas.

“I’m super excited for the All-Star race Saturday night," said Biffle who is running his sixth-place Fontana chassis this week. "No points, I don’t have to worry about anything, it’s kind of like having a week off and getting to drive the car how I want to. The team is pumped up about the Pit Crew Challenge Thursday night and we are excited about trying to win the million dollars Saturday night.”

Jimmie Johnson finished runner-up at both Texas and Las Vegas this season and comes in trying to reclaim his Charlotte dominance that saw him win five of six Charlotte races during one stretch from 2003-06, the final year in which Johnson won the All-Star race. Johnson also won the fall Charlotte race in 2009 and finds that the All-Star race is kind of a tune-up for next week's Coca-Cola 600.

“Yes, for sure," Johnson said regarding to the importance of this week's notes translating to next week's Coca-Cola 600. "Not only for the 600, but we’ve been there some years where we needed to improve our mile-and-a-half stuff and just came with just a totally different concept. It is a great testing weekend with practice and qualifying and all of that stuff. It’s a good time to try stuff, and all teams do.”

Tony Stewart won at Las Vegas and then faded at Texas, but also has a 2009 All-Star trophy and check in his back pocket.

A couple of drivers I would be surprised not to see compete well this week are Martin Truex Jr, Clint Bowyer and Mark Martin from the Michael Waltrip stables. Martin and Truex Jr each had the look of winners in their Texas runs and both should find themselves with high odds making them too tempting to pass on. Truex Jr. will be in the field while Martin should be in the 30-to-1 range.

Another driver that might give reason to take a shot with is Dale Earnhardt Jr. Even though he’s not guaranteed to make the race, he’ll get in just because of the fan vote which makes the ‘Field’ bet an interesting one to analyze (LVH listed him in their All-Star odds just because they know fans will get him in if needed). He’s got a good enough to car to win with every week, and some day will. A fond memory for most Junior fans is when he had his coming out party as a rookie in 2000 winning the All-Star race.

Just for the record, he was 20-to-1 to win that race and my sports book got buried that day. I should have listened to Humpy Wheeler who said Junior was going to win before the race. I never made the mistake of not listening to Wheeler before an All-Star race again.

While this isn’t a crap shoot like Talladega, and only 23 drivers participating with no restrictor-plates on, it is much different than a regular 1.5-mile race because the nature of the money at stake and no points makes it extremely volatile. But it’s still a race and action must be had, so get get ‘em and enjoy the night.

Gordon Looking For Sixth Bristol Win with Invite to Chase and Showdown

Jeff Gordon's last Bristol win came in 2002 (Getty)
BRISTOL, Tenn. – Win it, and Jeff Gordon is in it(s).

If five-time Bristol Motor Speedway winner Gordon takes the checkered flag in Saturday’s IRWIN Tools Night Race, he will clinch a spot in the 2011 “Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.” Along with earning one of those 12 coveted spots in the 10-race playoff, Gordon would also secure the final spot in the Sprint Summer Showdown –joining Paul Menard, Brad Keselowski, Marcos Ambrose and Kyle Busch as those racing for the bonus in Atlanta on September 4.

“We have one more chance to earn a spot in the Showdown, and I really want to be the driver that wins a fan one million dollars in Atlanta,” said Gordon, driver of the No. 24 Drive To End Hunger Chevrolet. “I think this such a cool program by Sprint that is a great chance for a fan — and a charity — to win a million dollars.

“The Bristol night race is just a completely different atmosphere. The intensity level may be even higher with the final Showdown spot on the line.”

Also on the line for the four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion is a berth in the Chase. If Gordon wins Saturday night, he would secure at least a “wild card” spot –entries into the playoff for the two drivers with the most wins that are outside the top 10after race No. 26 at Richmond. He can also secure his spot in the Chase if he holds at least a 97-point advantage over 11th-place in the standings following Bristol. That gap currently sits at 69.

“Even though we have a little bit of a cushion, the focus hasn’t changed,” said Gordon, who has earned the most points in the last 10 races – moving from 13th up to sixth in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings while cutting the deficit to the leader from 121 to 60 during that span. “ The goal is to win each and every week. With the cushion, how we go about it has changed.

“With that cushion, we can take more risks with fuel or pit strategy the next few races to try to get another win.”

Along with his five wins at the 0.533-mile high banked short track, Gordon has earned five poles, 14 top-fives and 20 top-10’s. Much of that success occurred before a track reconfiguration in 2007.

“There was a groove – a rhythm – that I found on the old layout,” said Gordon. “I just haven’t found it yet in the new layout.”

If found this weekend, it could be worth a million dollars.

NASCAR Sprint Showdown and All-Star Race Odds to Win From The Las Vegas Hilton Super Book

by Micah Roberts

It’s All-Star weekend in Charlotte and unlike all the other sports who loaf around in their all-star games, NASCAR’s version is serious business. There’s no points involved which makes everyone get after it a little bit more making the event more spectacular than a regular NASCAR race. The prize at the end for the winner is a whopping $1 million dollars.

To be eligible for the All-Star race, a driver must have won a race in 2009 or 2010, be a past Sprint Cup Champion in the last 10 years, or have won the All-Star race within the last 10 years. Only 18 drivers are currently eligible to start based on those qualifications giving the fans the best of the best to race it all out.

Three other drivers will make the race as well. Prior to the All-Star event there will be a qualifying race called the Sprint Showdown. The first and second place finishers of that 40 lap race will qualify for the All-Star race and then there will be fan voting to determine the final entry.

This years Sprint Showdown qualifying race will be exciting just because there are so many quality drivers in it this year. Drivers like Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton, and Juan Pablo Montoya will all be scrambling to qualify for the $1 million prize.

To get a good read on who should do well at Charlotte this week, we can go back and look at the races of Charlotte’s sister tracks of Las Vegas, Texas, and Atlanta. All three of the tracks are similar in size and banking and require similar set-ups.

Jimmie Johnson won at Las Vegas and has finished in the top-12 of all three 1.5-mile races this year. Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne haven’t won on any of the three tracks but both are the only drivers to finish in the top-10 on all three.

Kurt Busch won at Atlanta as well as finishing fourth at Texas. Denny Hamlin won at Texas, but didn’t fare well in the other two races.

The driver who might be the best of them all on these type tracks doesn’t have anything to show for it. Jeff Gordon had the best car at Las Vegas and Texas, but only has a third place finish to show for it.

Humpy Wheeler used to give pretty good advice on who would run well in the All-Star race. The guy was almost always correct in his predictions, an absolutely amazing run; even for those of us in Las Vegas. I used to always try to handicap who Humpy would pick just based on the information at hand for everyone, but the one variable that couldn't be calculated was all the research he did on his own in the garages. He always got the best information and couldn't be matched.

My Humpy Wheeler pick this week based on all the information, and going with Humpy's past tendencies, is Jeff Gordon. Even though it's not likely Humpy will make a pick this week, my instincts and knowledge of following the legend lead me to believe Gordon would have been his choice.
