Top-10 drivers to win 2014 Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas prior to practices

Lots to be learn about the cars during Thursday testing at LVMS
Here are the top 10 driver ratings for the Sprint Cup Kobalt 400 before practice begins Thursday:

1. No. 48 Jimmie Johnson (5-1): His 9.5 average finish is the best among all drivers, as well as his track-record four wins. His rise to the top of NASCAR has happened through Las Vegas, as he has won the championship in three of the same seasons he won at Las Vegas. The 1.5-mile tracks usually have been Johnson’s bread and butter, but in 2013, he won only one of the 11 events. That win came late in the year at Las Vegas’ sister track in Texas. It has been four years since he last won in Las Vegas, his longest drought, so let’s just say he’s hungry.

2. No. 17 Matt Kenseth (7-1): Last year’s winner took his third Las Vegas checkered flag home and has averaged an 11.6 finish since 2000, third-best. Based on 2013, when he won four times on the 1.5-mile tracks, he should be considered the favorite. The biggest question for Kenseth and all the teams will be whether those setup notes from 2013 still will be applicable this season with the minor aerodynamic changes.

3. No. 2 Brad Keselowski (10-1): The 2012 champ didn’t win a race last season until race 31 at Charlotte, but then he fared well the rest of the way on the final two 1.5-mile tracks. He had a career-best third-place finish last year at Las Vegas and has momentum after a strong Phoenix run Sunday. He could offer some of the best odds-to-win value.

4. No. 4 Kevin Harvick (10-1): After dominating at Phoenix in practice and during the race, leading 224 of 312 laps, he immediately answered any questions about how his new Stewart-Haas car would perform. There were questions about the SHR cars entering the season after they ran poor in 2013. Las Vegas will be a major test for them and will be reflective of how their season may be on the 1.5-mile tracks this season. If he looks fast in testing and practice this week, a season championship bet at 8-1 odds might not be a bad idea.

5. No. 88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. (10-1): He never has won at Las Vegas and never has won a championship. There have been two races on two different kinds of tracks, and he won one and was second in the other. Chances are we can expect him to be good Sunday as well, because his momentum into 2014 started at the end of last season, when he finished second at Texas and third at Homestead. The eventual Cup champion has won at Las Vegas five times.

6. No. 99 Carl Edwards (15-1): He always has been ready for Las Vegas, where his 9.7 average finish is second to Mr. Vegas, Jimmie Johnson. Edwards is a two-time Las Vegas winner and has finished fifth in each of the past two years. His two wins last season on were on the smaller tracks at Phoenix and Richmond, and his best 1.5-mile track performance was a third place at Texas in April.

7. No. 11 Denny Hamlin (10-1): The last time the drivers raced on a 1.5-mile track, Hamlin took the checkered flag to close out the season at Homestead. He carried that momentum into Daytona Speedweeks with Sprint Unlimited and Bud Duel wins, then finished second in the Daytona 500. But he struggled last week at Phoenix. Is that just a one-race, bad-day deal? We’ll find out more Thursday during testing, but the betting man would have the edge to wager that he’ll be fast with Joe Gibbs power.

8. No. 18 Kyle Busch (7-1): For the same reasons to expect Hamlin to be fast, Busch should be considered as well, and maybe even more because he had success on the big horsepower tracks last season, winning at Texas, Atlanta and Fontana. He won at Las Vegas in 2009 and finished fourth in 2013. He is our hometown favorite.

9. No. 5 Kasey Kahne (8-1): He has won the pole three times and been runner-up twice, but in 10 Las Vegas starts, he has yet to win, which is surprising because he always has been one of the better drivers on 1.5-mile tracks. Last season he was runner-up on four of the 1.5-mile tracks. One thing we probably can count on is that he’ll be fast, and, sometimes, that’s all you can ask for.

10. No. 24 Jeff Gordon (15-1): He parlayed his only Las Vegas win in 2001 into his fourth and final Cup Championship. On Sunday, without Mark Martin and Jeff Burton, only he and Bobby Labonte will have started every Las Vegas Cup race since 1998. He has a 15.4 average finish in those 16 starts, but has had poor finishes the past three seasons. Like his teammates Kahne, Junior and Johnson, he should be fast off the hauler.

Note: Thursday’s test session at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will be a huge indicator of who is the driver to beat, and then the speeds from the final practice on Saturday should paint the picture even more clearly. Everything the teams learn in Las Vegas will have a major effect in how they run on the 1.5-mile tracks for the rest of the season, which consist of 11 of 36 races. Do well on these tracks, five of which are in the Chase, and a birth to the championship game at Homestead is likely.

Kevin Harvick on a roll with new team, looking for first Vegas win

Kevin harvick is 15-to-2 to win Sunday at Las Vegas
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (March 5, 2014) – Kevin Harvick heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend seeking his first Sprint Cup win at the 1.5-mile tri-oval. It’s one of only nine racetracks on the Sprint Cup circuit where the driver of the No. 4 Jimmy John’s Chevrolet SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) has never won, but he certainly has momentum on his side thanks to a dominating win at Phoenix International Raceway last weekend in just his second points-paying race start with SHR.

There’s something else Harvick is seeking at Las Vegas, and that’s a seat at the head table for the 2014 banquet. Harvick’s early win virtually guarantees his No. 4 team a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup playoffs. While there’s still plenty of racing to be done between now and Nov. 16, when the championship is decided at Homestead-Miami Speedway, there’s a bit of pressure that’s relieved for the Bakersfield, Calif., native. Knowing he’s likely punched his ticket into the postseason, Harvick and his Rodney Childers-led crew can now race aggressively for additional wins.

And that all starts this weekend, when the 24-time Sprint Cup Series race winner will look to score back-to-back victories for the third time in his career.

In 13 Sprint Cup starts at Las Vegas, Harvick has three top-five finishes, five top-10s and has led 58 laps. While he’s yet to find his way to victory lane there, it has been a stout venue for Harvick, who recorded a runner-up finish there in 2010. His average finishing position of 12.7 ranks Las Vegas sixth-best among active tracks for the 38-year-old driver. While he has not recorded a Sprint Cup win at the racetrack, he does have two wins in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, which came in 2004 and 2010.

And in loop-data statistics, Harvick leads all drivers in the category of positions improved in the last 10 percent of laps in each race, ranks sixth in average running position and green-flag passes, and seventh in the number of laps spent running in the top-15. Harvick’s average driver rating of 94.8 ranks him eighth-best among all drivers at Las Vegas.

Optimism is high for the driver of the Jimmy John’s Chevrolet, knowing that Las Vegas has been a strong racetrack for SHR in recent years, as well. Teammate and team co-owner Tony Stewart claimed the checkered flag there in 2012.

So while Harvick will be focused on the task at hand for the year’s first visit to Las Vegas – winning Sunday’s Kobalt 400 – he’ll also be keeping an eye on the big picture, and that’s making a second trip to Las Vegas for December’s Sprint Cup banquet, when he hopes to take his seat at the head table for the first time in his career.

KEVIN HARVICK, Driver of the No. 4 Jimmy John’s Chevrolet SS for Stewart-Haas Racing:

Talk about your victory at Phoenix, and what it meant for you and your Stewart-Haas Racing team.

“Well, it’s just a huge credit to the team, the organization and everybody who has been a part of this process as we’ve gone through the winter and over the last couple months of last year. To see the amount of change within Stewart-Haas Racing with the car, the haulers, the pit boxes, everything that has come with putting all these pieces together is really just a huge credit to these guys and all the guys who work in the shop.”

Talk a little bit about the satisfaction of putting Stewart Haas Racing in the Chase so soon.
“There’s been a lot of skepticism as we’ve gone through the offseason. For me, I heard it, I paid attention to it during the offseason, but as we’ve gone through the first few weeks, you try to put yourself in your own little world. All in all, Gene (Haas, SHR co-owner) has given us every resource that you can imagine. Tony (Stewart) has been very supportive of whatever we wanted to do. Rodney (Childers, crew chief) has put together a group of guys who believe in what we’re doing. Rodney is a relationship guy. He’s taught me a lot about trying to make sure you know who the people are, what they’re doing, and to support them as they do it. We had some hiccups throughout the first week. I felt like we were going to have those. I think everybody anticipated those. Nobody has pointed fingers and said, ‘It’s this guy’s fault or that guy’s fault.’ It’s, ‘What do we need to fix that or this to try to make that better?’ I think, as you go through time, the sky’s the limit for this team because everybody is still trying to learn each other’s names, let alone what’s going on with the racecar. I’ve heard Gene say as he’s walked through the race shop that the enthusiasm is contagious at SHR. I think that is very important. You’re only as good as the people you have around you. I’m very honored to have driven the Jimmy John’s Chevrolet into victory lane in week two. It’s quite an honor to be a part of that.”

Talk a little bit about coming to Las Vegas, and having the test day Thursday.
“Well, we tested with the new no ride-height rule at Charlotte when we did the NASCAR test at the end of last year and I expect the cars to have a little bit more grip and a little bit more speed than what we had before. Along with that, when you have those changes in the car, it changes all the springs and the way the engineers go about looking at everything that they do. So it’s a whole different thought process than it was last year. And, as we found out at Daytona in the Sprint Unlimited, the main thing you have to pay attention to is being able to get the tires off the car on a pit stop. So, we had to adjust for that during the rest of Budweiser Speedweeks a little bit. I know they’ve worked hard on it, but things happen a lot more aggressively coming into the pit stall and everything is hot and so you’ve just got to make sure that’s right.”

So, how important is the Thursday test session going to be?
“For us, it’s a new team. We had some things here and there – a lot of things here and there – that we had to work through at Daytona and Phoenix and everybody did a good job. So, those four extra hours to get everything sorted out for us is important. But I think there are just so many new things, and the way you look at things, and the way you go about things, and the springs and things you run underneath the car. They are so drastically different than what you ran last year that we’re looking for that baseline to be able to understand exactly what we need and where to work from. In that same sense, things will evolve really fast because things are quite a bit different. So, you’ll have something that will evolve into something new by the time you get to the next week.”

Hamlin expects to 'see a lot more of what we got a glimpse of at Phoenix' at Las Vegas

Denny Hamlin is 10/1 to win Sunday at Las Vegas
Event: Kobalt Tools 400
Date/Time: March 9/12 p.m. PT
2013 winner: Matt Kenseth
2013 polesitter: Brad Keselowski
Distance: 267 laps/400.5 miles
Track Length: 1.5 miles
Banking: 20 degrees
Track Shape: D-Shaped Oval

EXPRESS NOTES:

Phoenix Recap:
Denny Hamlin finished 19th in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, battling a loose #11 FedEx Office Toyota throughout the 312-lap event won by Kevin Harvick. Hamlin was unable to make up spots on a handful of late-race restarts, with his car working better on longer runs, despite multiple changes to the chassis on pit road called by crew chief Darian Grubb. Harvick crossed the finish line 0.489 seconds ahead of runner-up Dale Earnhardt Jr., followed by Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Jeff Gordon. Hamlin — the 2012 spring Phoenix winner — started 12th and moved into the top-10 before a competition caution on Lap 35. Following the ensuing restart and green flag pit stop on Lap 110, Hamlin fought the car’s handling for the remainder of the event. The finish dropped Hamlin to eighth in points following Phoenix, just 22 markers behind leader Earnhardt Jr. after two of 26 regular season races.

Las Vegas Preview: The Series heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for Sunday’s 400-mile event on the 1.5-mile oval. Hamlin is making his ninth career Cup Series start at Las Vegas this weekend, owning four top-10 finishes in eight previous trips to the track. Hamlin started a career-best sixth in the event at Las Vegas one year ago, and ran among the leaders for the majority of the race, but a late pit road speeding penalty relegated the FedEx team to a 15th-place finish. Hamlin led three laps in the event won by Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth.

FedEx Office – Closest to Las Vegas Motor Speedway: 2288 S. Nellis Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89104, (702) 431-5076

Ontario Along for the Ride at Las Vegas: The FedEx Ground Ontario district will be recognized for outstanding service quality with its district code “ONTO” on the b-post of the #11 FedEx Ground Toyota this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Ontario district, part of FedEx Ground’s North American operations based out of the Toronto hub, comprises the Ontario province as well as Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

HAMLIN CONVERSATION – LAS VEGAS:

What do you anticipate with the new rules package for the first intermediate race track on schedule?

“I think you’ll see a lot more of what we got a glimpse of at Phoenix last weekend. Teams are still adjusting to the rules and Las Vegas will give everyone a good idea of where their intermediate program is. Obviously, it will help to get four hours of testing in on Thursday to adjust anything we need to for the race weekend. We learn every time we get on the track with these cars and this weekend will be another learning experience. Las Vegas is a fast track, and hopefully we’ll have a fast FedEx Camry to match.”

Kyle Busch on racing in home town of Las Vegas: 'More Pressure on Myself'

Kyle Busch is 10/1 to win this week at Las Vegas
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (March 4, 2014) – Aside from NASCAR’s biggest events like the Daytona 500 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway or the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a win at the hometown racetrack is high on the priority list for many in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Las Vegas native Kyle Busch crossed off an all-important hometown win in just his fifth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start at his hometown Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The driver of the No. 18 M&M’s Peanut Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) and 2002 honors graduate of Las Vegas’ Durango High Schoolwould like to double his number of Sprint Cup wins at the 1.5-mile oval after he brought home that emotional first win there in 2009.

Driving the yellow “Americas Favorite Nut” Toyota this weekend, Busch hopes this weekend will be less eventful than 2009, when he qualified on the pole but was forced to start at the rear of the field because the team needed to change engines during Friday practice. Unfazed, Busch remained patient on race day as he and the M&M’s team worked their way to the front of the field by the 54th lap. Busch went on to lead three times for 51 laps en route to claiming what he called at the time the biggest win of his young career.

While that win was special, but Busch already was no stranger to winning on Las Vegas Motor Speedway property. From 1999 to 2001, he earned more than 65 wins in Legends cars while racking up two track championships at the facility’s “Bullring,” which existed for several years before the 1.5-mile oval was built. Busch eventually moved up to Late Model Stock cars, and his winning ways continued as he captured 10 victories in Late Model competition at the Bullring in 2001.

So as Busch returns to Las Vegas for Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series Kobalt 400, the only thing that will be sweeter than winning his first Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas would be winning a second Sprint Cup race on the grounds of where his promising career began.

KYLE BUSCH, Driver of the No. 18 M&M’s Peanut Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing:

Is there more pressure racing at your hometown track?

“Yeah, Vegas always means a little bit more pressure – more pressure on myself – just because it’s the hometown and you want to win there. Thankfully, I have won there and I’ve knocked that one off the list, but certainly you want to win there every year. It seems like either Carl (Edwards) or Jimmie (Johnson) are better than most, but I love Vegas, the atmosphere and everything going on around that place. It’s always been a big race for us and the M&M’s Peanut team.”

What was it like to bring home a Sprint Cup win in your hometown in 2009?
“It was cool. To go out there and to run a smooth race and to have a shot at winning at the end of the race, that’s what it’s all about. I watched Vegas being built from the ground up, and I remember when it wasn’t anything but a gleam in the eye of Richie Clyne (founder of Las Vegas Motor Speedway) – all those guys who made that place happen.”

Where does that 2009 win rank among your career wins?
“It was the biggest at the time, but the triple at Bristol ranks up there now, too, along with winning the inaugural Sprint Cup race at Kentucky a few years back. It was awesome in 2009, though – just the feeling of a lifetime. I told everyone it would be just like another race, but it really meant a lot more than that when I got to victory lane. To have my mom there, and my brother come to victory lane, just made it that much more special. We didn’t have the best car in 2009, but I feel like I drove a smart race, anyway, and did what we needed to do. We worked on it all day and kept making it better.”

Having grown up in Las Vegas, do you still have a lot of friends in the area? Do you get a lot of ticket requests from friends and family?
“I get a lot of ticket requests for California, Vegas and Phoenix – all the West Coast stops that we run. It’s kind of hard to fulfill all of them, but we try when we can. We get to go to M&M’s World on the (Las Vegas) Strip to sign some autographs on Thursday, so I’m looking forward to seeing some of the hometown fans there, as well.”

You have some extended track time at Las Vegas with some new rules in place starting last weekend at Phoenix. What do you expect this weekend on the first 1.5-mile oval of the season?
“I think I’m expecting that we really don’t know what to expect. How the car raced at Phoenix will be much different when we get to Vegas. We’ll try to use the Thursday test day and the rest of the practices as best we can and learn as much as we can. So far, they drive well. We haven’t really gotten into a pack yet with the mile-and-a-half stuff to see how they lead and follow. We’ve always qualified well at Vegas and I’m hoping we can keep that going and have some good track position to start the race with our M&M’s Peanut Camry and get Americas Favorite Nut in victory lane.

Are you able to enjoy trips to your hometown?
“It’s fine going back there. There’s really not much family out there. It’s just family friends. There are a lot of friends you get to see and catch up with that you text back-and-forth or talk back-and-forth with during the year, but you never get to see them, so that’s always cool to go out there to the race. Besides that, there are the different appearances we do for M&M’s. You get to go to some of the restaurants that you liked there growing up, so that’s always cool. It’s just another weekend, but I particularly know my way around this city better than I do any other place.”

What is your fondest racing memory of growing up in Las Vegas?
“My fondest racing memory is probably my first Late Model race. I started about eighth or 10th and ended up winning it. My first-ever start, I won. So that is definitely a great memory to have.”
