Harvick using chassis that has led in all six starts

Kevin Harvick is 6/1 co-favorite to win at Bristol.
KANNAPOLIS, North Carolina (Aug. 19, 2015) – Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 4 Budweiser/Jimmy John’s Chevrolet SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), is looking for redemption Saturday night in the Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

The defending Sprint Cup champion looked to have the car to beat at Bristol in April. He started fourth and led 184 laps but found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time as he was collected in a lap-311 accident when Jimmie Johnson, Jeb Burton and David Ragan spun directly in front of him while Harvick was running third. Harvick finished 38th – one of his only three finishes outside the top-10 through the first 23 races of 2015.

The Bakersfield, California native is no stranger to victory lane at Bristol, however. In fact, he has won there in each of NASCAR’s three touring series.

He scored a Sprint Cup victory at Bristol in April 2005, when he started 13th and led 109 of 500 laps and beat Elliott Sadler to the finish line by 4.652 seconds. He has five NASCAR Xfinity Series wins there with his most recent coming in March 2009, when he started 13th and led 46 laps to beat runner-up Carl Edwards by 0.798 of a second. He also visited victory lane in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at Bristol in August 2011, when he started sixth, led 103 of 200 laps and beat Johnny Sauter by 0.434 of a second.

The Sprint Cup points leader has consistently run and finished in the top-five throughout the season with achance to win nearly every weekend. He has two wins and nine second-place finishes, three times he’s finished third, and twice he’s finished fourth. He has also scored top-10s in 20 of 23 Sprint Cup races and, in the three races he finished outside the top-10, he had an unfortunate issue arise while leading the race.

Harvick would like to add his third Sprint Cup win at Bristol Saturday night. He scored his first of the year in the season’s third race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and his second the very next week at Phoenix International Raceway.

Harvick clinched his spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship playoff field with his eighth-place finish July 11 at Kentucky, guaranteeing a top-30 finish in the driver points after race No. 26 Sept. 12 at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway. He only needs to attempt to qualify for the remaining three regular-season SprintCup events to make it official.

Twenty-three races into 2015, Harvick has a series-best 16 top-five finishes to go with his 20 top-10s, and he sits atop the driver standings with 866 points. The No. 4 Chevrolet SS has led a series-high 1,406 laps with an average finish of 7.8. The 1,406 laps led are 685 more than the next-closest competitor – 721 by his SHR teammate Kurt Busch.

Harvick has led at least one lap in 19 of 23 Sprint Cup races in 2015, including a streak of 14 in a row from March 1 at Atlanta Motor Speedway through June 14 at Michigan. The staggering number of laps led and the 14 consecutive races with laps led is among numerous other impressive numbers Harvick has compiled this season.

He leads several other statistical categories: 120.2 driver rating, 33 bonus points, 877 fastest laps run, 22.8 percent of fastest laps run, 23.2 percent of laps led, 1,802.35 miles led, 5,485 laps in the top-15, and average running position of 7.44 in addition to his average finish of 7.8.

While Harvick and the No. 4 team are locked into the Chase field by points and wins, gaining bonus points for additional wins is now their top priority through the next three races, starting this weekend at Bristol.

KEVIN HARVICK, Driver of the No. 4 Budweiser/Jimmy John’s Chevrolet SS:

What is it that makes the Bristol night race so special?

“The Bristol night race is one that has always been circled on everybody’s list as a race that they want to win. I think when you look at Bristol, it’s probably become harder than it used to be to pass, just for the fact that you run up against the wall. Plus, you add that short-track element. It’s hot and it’s frustrating, as well, just because it’s hard to pass and you know that you have to make time. It usually ends up that you have guys who run into each other and then we all get mad. It can definitely be a place where the tempers flare.”

Do you remember your first time racing under the lights at Bristol, and do you still have that same feeling when you go back?
“Bristol has never been one of those places that you think about that much, to be honest with you. It just seems like all the action and everything happens during the night races there, for whatever reason. It’s a fun place to race. It’s been a place where we’ve had a lot of success. And, sometimes you go there and you have no success because you run into something. It’s kind of feast or famine as you go there and that’s kind of where we are right now at this point in our season. We want to win races and, really, nothing else matters at this point except for wins. Hopefully, when we go back to Bristol, we will be on the right side of having some success.”

Chassis Information:
Chassis No. 4-884: Kevin Harvick will pilot the No. 4 Budweiser/Jimmy John’s Chevrolet SS built on Chassis No. 4-884 in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Irwin Tools Night Race Saturday night at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. Built in 2014, Chassis No. 4-884 made its debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last July, where it won the pole, led 12 laps and finished eighth. It also won the pole in its second appearance at Atlanta in August, when it led 195 laps and finished 19th. It won its third appearance at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in October, when it started seventh and led 162 laps. Most recently, Harvick drove it for his 500th career start at Texas when he qualified fifth, led two laps and finished second. In its first race of 2015, Chassis No. 4-884 started and finished second and led 96 laps at Texas in April. It made its second appearance of 2015 at Dover (Del.) International Speedway, where Harvick started sixth, led 91 laps and finished sixth.

Chevrolet Notes & Quotes: 2015 Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol

Five races has passed since Chevy's last win at Bristol.
Bright lights, rough and tumble racing on tap at ‘World’s Fastest Half-Mile’

DETROIT – (Aug. 19, 2015) – Electric, intense, exciting – all adjectives Team Chevy drivers use to describe the action and atmosphere at Bristol Motor Speedway during 500 laps of racing under the lights at the ‘World’s Fastest Half-Mile’.

Saturday night under the thick, humid, night air in the Tennessee Mountains, 23 Chevrolet SS drivers will suit up for battle around the 0.533-mile concrete coliseum. They will all compete against the world’s toughest drivers in an effort to take the most successful manufacturer in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series history to victory lane at one of NASCAR’s most popular venues for the 44th time in series history.

If successful, one driver will add his or her name to the Chevrolet history books by recording yet another milestone for the Bowtie Brand in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition: Chevrolet’s 750th series win.

History is not the only thing drivers will compete for Saturday night. With only three races remaining until the Chase cutoff race in Richmond, Virginia, drivers without a win this season will be extra aggressive if they are in a position to earn a victory Saturday night. Not only does every driver who takes the green flag want to win at Bristol, considered one of the sports crown jewel races, but they all want to earn a spot in this season’s Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

As the lights go up and the intensity ratchets up, drivers will be seeing all black. This weekend Chevrolet is encouraging everyone to join in the ‘Bristol Blackout’ powered by Chevrolet. Fans are asked to wear their favorite driver’s t-shirt in black, while drivers will be taken on a parade lap around the 36-degree banking in Midnight Black Chevrolet Silverados. At the Team Chevy display all the cars, trucks and SUV’s will be black.

As fans wait to take their seats to watch 500 laps of intense racing at the ‘last great coliseum’, they are encouraged to take in everything happening at the Team Chevy display. The Team Chevy stage will be bustle of activity starting when the display opens at noon Wednesday.

Throughout the weekend, fans are encouraged to visit the Team Chevy display to check out the great lineup of Chevrolet cars, trucks and SUVs on exhibit in the midway. Fans can ask questions of their favorite drivers while at the Team Chevy stage. Brandon Jones, Spencer Gallagher, Ray Black, Jr., John Hunter Nemechek, Jamie McMurray and Justin Allgaier will all be on stage visiting with fans throughout the weekend.

The 500-lap/266.5-mile Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday Aug. 22. Live coverage will be available on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN), PRN, Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 90 and NASCAR.com.

ENGINEER EXPERTISE FROM THE GARAGE AREA – ALBA COLON, CHEVROLET RACING PROGRAM MANAGER – NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES:
“This weekend NASCAR’s three premier racing series head to Bristol Motor Speedway. Action starts on Wednesday with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, continues on Friday evening with the NASCAR Xfinity Series and we will cap off a great racing weekend with the NASCAR Sprint Cup race on Saturday night. There is nothing like short track racing at night. For sure, these are some of fans favorite races during the year!! Bristol night races never disappoint.

“With just three races left to go before the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series begins, the pressure is really on the teams that haven’t won a race yet or very close from the cut off line of the top 16 positions. For sure not all the positions will be decided until the last lap at the Richmond race. Every lap, every win, and every position counts more than ever. Team Chevy has nine drivers in the top 16 positions; and several drivers very close to make the grid too. Our main goals the next three weeks are to win races and to continue to work hard to secure as many drivers as we can for the final 10-race run for the championship.

“For sure this high-speed half-mile track offers its own set of unique challenges. To be successful at this race, it is extremely important to have a well-balanced car and staying out of trouble. This place is very demanding on drivers, teams and equipment. A great handling car is necessary to survive and make it in the top 10 at the end of the race. The teams will have to work their magic while they practice and qualify in the heat of the day, but race in cooler temperatures at night.

“After the last several races, we all welcome some traditional short track racing. Team Chevy is looking forward to a very successful weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway.”

TEAM CHEVY FROM THE DRIVER’S SEAT:

KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 4 BUDWEISER/JIMMY JOHN’S CHEVROLET SS – POINTS LEADER
“The Bristol night race is one that has always been circled on everybody’s list as a race that they want to win. I think when you look at Bristol it’s probably become harder than it used to be to pass just for the fact that you run up against the wall. Plus, you add that short track element, it’s hot and it’s frustrating as well just because it’s hard to pass and you know that you have to make time. In the end it usually ends up that you have guys that run into each other and then we all get mad. It can definitely be a place where the tempers flare.”

DALE EARNHARDT, JR., NO. 88 NATIONWIDE CHEVROLET SS – 3RD IN STANDINGS
“I love racing at Bristol. I always look forward to racing there. This weekend’s race is the one of the best tickets on the schedule. There is just no other track like it.”

MARTIN TRUEX, JR., NO. 78 FURNITURE ROW/VISSER PRECISION CHEVROLET SS – 4TH IN STANDINGS
“The first thing that strikes me about the Bristol night race is the electric prerace show — the colosseum-type atmosphere, the national anthem and the flyover. You feel the energy around you that is different from any place we go to. But it’s a tough little racetrack. The biggest thing that stands out to me is that when you get there and make those first couple of laps it takes you a minute just to catch your breath and really think about what did the car actually do and what do I need to work on because it’s just so fast and so breathtaking. It’s a neat racetrack, but also a tough one for me. It’s been an up-and-down career at Bristol over the years. I’ve had a lot of good runs there and also had a lot of trouble. We weren’t that good at the first Bristol race this year so we have a little work to do.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S PRO SERVICES CHEVROLET SS – 6TH IN STANDINGS
“Michigan was a tough race for us. We had a fast Lowe’s Chevy and just had some things go wrong and chased it all day. We were so, so loose. You have to put the bad races out of your mind and focus forward – Bristol should be a great race for us – we had a good one in the spring.”

KURT BUSCH, NO. 41 HAAS AUTOMATION CHEVROLET SS – 8TH IN STANDINGS
“The Bristol night race it’s the electricity, the excitement, the hot summer evening at a short track. All of us grew up on short tracks and that atmosphere there it really brings us right back to where we started. That energy and electricity from a Saturday night Bristol race I think everybody looks forward to it. It’s almost like the official stamp of summer we have to go back to that short track on Saturday night.”

JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 MCDONALD’S/CESSNA CHEVROLET SS – 10TH IN STANDINGS
“We tested at Bristol a week ago and I thought we had a really good test. It took a while to get that top groove going, but it is just incredible once you get that worked in, how much faster the lap times are. I’m a fan of that top groove as opposed to the way the track used to be, just trying to move a guy and pass on the bottom. Instead of working a car off the bottom of the track you try getting on the outside, or try to work the bottom and hopefully pin somebody in lap traffic. Bristol is a really demanding track in the sense that you have to maintain your focus because things happen really fast, but it is super fun when you have a good car.”

PAUL MENARD, NO. 27 KNAUF/MENARDS CHEVROLET SS – 11TH IN STANDINGS
“We worked on some ideas at the test recently that we normally wouldn’t have the time to try out in a short practice session, so I’d say it was beneficial. We’ll approach this race just as any other, try to maximize points, whether it is an educated gamble on mileage or just bolt on four tires and go. We’ll see how the race plays out and execute accordingly.”

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 31 CATERPILLAR CHEVROLET SS – 12TH IN STANDINGS
*Making his 500th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start at BMS

“It seems to depend on the tire we have and how the racing is going to be. There are times where qualifying is super important and there are times where track is three or four lanes wide where we can just have a great race. It really all depends on the tire which I think is the same. We’ll just have to see. Qualifying is always important at Bristol.”

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 AXALTA CHEVROLET SS – 13TH IN STANDINGS
“When you have high-banked, very fast short track in this stadium – in this “colosseum” – surrounded by the most avid NASCAR fans, the energy in the stands and on the track is electrifying. It just makes for a great event.

“I have a lot of great memories with this rainbow paint scheme. What I love is this paint scheme is for the fans. The fans wanted us to run this scheme again during my final season, and this Axalta Chevy SS definitely stands out. You’re not going to miss it.”

KASEY KAHNE, NO. 5 GREAT CLIPS CHEVROLET SS – 17TH IN STANDINGS
“My first thought was, ‘It’s Bristol baby’! What a great feeling walking out of Thunder Valley with the W. I had always dreamed about winning a Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway, and that night we did it. Bristol is one of those tracks you really feel like you need to win. It’s such a tough track. My first race here in 2002 was just something I couldn’t believe – the way that you drove, as hard as you drove here, the way things happen so quickly. There are just so many things that are thrown at you. It’s a big confidence builder to win at Bristol. When I got home I set the trophy on my coffee table and used it as a new centerpiece for a while.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET SS – 19TH IN STANDINGS
“Bristol is one of my favorite tracks, and the night race there is something I really look forward to each year. We’ve had some good races at Bristol, and led a lot of laps in the Target Chevy earlier in the season, so we’re hoping for another strong run. I’m headed up for the modified and truck races before we get started, so looking forward to a good weekend.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 DOW CHEVROLET SS – 20TH IN STANDINGS
“I look forward to going to Bristol Motor Speedway. I think we’ve got a great shot there. If you don’t have a car that handles well it equates to a bad day at Bristol because you can’t get out of the way because everything flows to the top. You can really be aggressive at Bristol, and it’s a track where you are rewarded for being aggressive. It’s one of those places that is a physical track. When it’s all said and done you see drivers really spent after the race.”

DANICA PATRICK, NO. 10 GODADDY CHEVROLET SS – 21ST IN STANDINGS
“I like Bristol. Obviously can be a little bit…the cars definitely got in a train last time we were here. It was tough. It was a little bit hard to pass. But like I said, that is why the bottom becomes important because if you get stuck, or even if you start on the bottom on a restart. If your car is turning, you can make that work I think for a little while. I think qualifying is going to be really important, so definitely going to find myself doing a lot more qualifying runs…as many as possible before qualifying in the afternoon. But, I’ve liked Bristol since the first time I came here.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 BUSH’S GRILLIN BEANS CHEVROLET SS – 22ND IN STANDINGS
“When you get strapped in, you know it’s going to be a battle for 500 laps. Whether your car is amazing or no good, it’s a battle for 500 laps. This race especially I get in and my heart is beating a little bit quicker and a little bit harder than usual. You roll out and those three or four pace laps seem like they go by so fast. It’s a cool feeling. I get really amped up. It’s one of those things where you are trying to stay calm because you know for 500 laps the 42 other crazy people are on the racetrack besides the normal one are here to really make you mad. That’s what it all comes down to. You’re like, ‘Okay, try to stay calm’ and that’s what it’s all about. They drop the green and somebody usually runs into the back of you into Turn 1 and your just ticked off at that point until the end. It’s just a battle and that’s the best way to explain it. 500 laps is mentally and physically grueling, but hopefully when you get done, you’ve run all 500 laps. If you’ve done that, it’s a big accomplishment.”

CASEY MEARS, NO. 13 GEICO CHEVROLET SS – 23RD IN STANDINGS
“Bristol Motor Speedway is definitely one of the more fun places we go to all year. Racing is fast and tight and a lot of fun. Definitely I look forward to going back to Bristol every chance I get. It’s one of those race tracks where you can be fast and good and obviously staying out of trouble is the big goal. You have to keep the fenders on it and that means being patient and aggressive at the right times to try to have an issue-free race. Typically, our GEICO Chevrolet SS is pretty good at Bristol, so I’m looking forward to getting there.”

TONY STEWART, NO. 14 BASS PRO SHOPS/MOBIL 1 CHEVROLET SS – 26TH IN STANDINGS
“Bristol is one of those places where you’ve got to have everything kind of go your way. If you have one hiccup, it’s hard to recover from it. We’ve only won one race there and we’ve kind of been all over the board. It’s been feast or famine for us. It’s like if you have one problem in the first half of the race, it’s hard to recover from it. It makes for a very long day. We’ve had more long days than good days.”

JUSTIN ALLGAIER, NO. 51 BRANDT CHEVROLET SS – 30TH IN STANDINGS
“I’d say Bristol [Motor Speedway] is my favorite track that we race on. I have a lot of good memories from this year’s Spring race at the track. It felt really good to finish eighth and I think we can have an even better finish than that this weekend. It’s certainly one of the most challenging tracks because it is a short-track. One wrong move and you can lose 10 spots before you blink. Pit road is also unique there because there’s stalls on both sides of the track. There’s different rules for how you get to your stall if you are under the green flag versus the yellow flag. That’s not something we are used to every week. Bristol and Chevy have also teamed up for the Bristol Blackout, which is a really cool promotion for the fans. It’ll be neat to see a sea of black in the grandstands.”

Toyota Notes & Quotes: 2015 Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol

Toyota has won six of past eight Cup races.
DEFENDING WINNER: Toyota driver Matt Kenseth won from the pole at Bristol Motor Speedway in April to capture his second NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) win at the track in a Camry. Kenseth started from the pole and led 47 laps (of 511) en route to his fourth career Cup win at the 0.533-mile track, his most NSCS victories at any one facility. Since moving to Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) in 2013, Kenseth has two wins and a third-place finish in five appearances at Bristol – and he has nine top-10 results in his last 11 NSCS races at the track.

BULLY AT THE BULL RING: As good as Kenseth is at Bristol, Camry driver Kyle Busch can argue he’s the best at the ‘World’s Fastest Half-Mile.’ Busch has a combined 16 wins at Bristol across NASCAR’s three national touring series – five NSCS wins, seven NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) triumphs and four NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) victories – with all but two behind the wheel of a Toyota race vehicle. In 2010, Busch became the only driver in NASCAR history to sweep all three NASCAR national touring races at a track in a single race weekend at Bristol.

LUCKY 7s: Toyota drivers have 21 NASCAR wins at Bristol – seven in each NASCAR national touring series. In the NSCS, Busch (four wins), Kenseth (two) and Denny Hamlin (one) have combined for seven victories. In the NXS, Busch has a pair of three-peats at the track (2010-11, 2013-14) and Joey Logano piloted a Camry to victory lane in 2012. In the NCWTS, Busch (four), Johnny Benson (one), Timothy Peters (one) and Mike Skinner (one) have all won at the facility.

VETERAN PRESCENSE: Three veteran Tundra drivers should be considered favorites for solid finishes when the Truck Series returns to Bristol Motor Speedway for a midweek race. Among drivers with more than three starts at Bristol, ThorSport Racing teammates Matt Crafton and Johnny Sauter have the highest average finish at the short track – 10.2 and 10.9, respectively. Crafton, the two-time NCTWS defending champion, has seven top-10 results at Bristol, including a second-place finish, but has never led a lap at the track. Peters is one of three active drivers with a victory at Bristol (2012) and has led 349 laps at the track – nearly three times as many as any other active NCWTS driver.

NOTES, QUOTES & NUMBERS

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS): Camry drivers Matt Kenseth (seventh), Denny Hamlin (ninth), Carl Edwards (14th) and Clint Bowyer (15th) currently rank in the top-15 in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) point standings … Kyle Busch (29th) is also in the top-30 in the driver point standings, making him Chase eligible … Kenseth won last week’s NSCS race at Michigan International Speedway … The victory was Kenseth’s third of the season, including victories at Bristol and Pennsylvania’s Pocono Raceway …Darian Grubb, crew chief on the No. 19 Stanley Camry, and Toyota Racing Development (TRD) president David Wilson are graduates of Virginia Tech (VT) .. VT is scheduled to compete in a college football game against the University of Tennessee at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2016 … Camry drivers have won six of the last eight NSCS races with four wins by Busch (Sonoma, Kentucky, New Hampshire and Indy) and two by Kenseth (Pocono and Michigan).

MATT KENSETH, No. 20 Dollar General Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

What is the key to getting around Bristol Motor Speedway?

“Bristol is a fast track that changes a lot throughout the race and it’s hard to pass as well. The main key to Bristol is to be out front after your last pit stop and then trying to make sure you stay there. One of the toughest things to keep in mind at Bristol is patience. The top lane ends up being so much faster than the other lanes that when you’re all stuck on the top and you’re faster than someone else, you need to be able to time your moves and make your passes at the right places. If you make a pass in the wrong place, you can quickly get stuck on the bottom, which can be frustrating to have to fight to get back on that preferred high line.”

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Skittles Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

What is the biggest change with Joe Gibbs Racing this season?

“I think it’s a lot of things really, to be honest with you. I think it’s the new aero package that we have this year on everybody’s car, but it benefited us at the Toyota camp a little bit more. I think our engine shop has definitely done a good job over the off-season adapting to this new engine change and it’s just a matter of everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing – the engineering group and everything coming up with some fresh ideas over the off-season to try. We came out of the box – I wasn’t there – but we came out of the box strong. They went to Vegas and Denny (Hamlin) ran in the top-five and they went to California and I think Matt (Kenseth) would have won if it wasn’t for the rear end axle breaking on pit road. Everybody just seemed to be really working well this year and having some good, solid runs even before I got back. Since I’ve gotten back in the race car at Charlotte in May, it just definitely seemed like that next level has kind of taken off for us at Joe Gibbs Racing. I don’t know why, but I felt like getting back in – obviously, I needed to make up my points deficit and everything and I needed to run real well and run strong – we’ve really been able to do that and we’ve capitalized on some good days. We had some bad days, but we’ve definitely capitalized on some of those good days in winning four races. It’s just a matter now of hoping to continue this wave, this ride all the way through the next 13 weeks.”

NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS): Camry drivers Daniel Suarez (seventh) and JJ Yeley (12th) currently rank in the top-15 in the NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) point standings … Kyle Busch will compete in all three Bristol events, while Denny Hamlin will race in the NSCS and NXS … Suarez will run double-duty at Bristol in both the NXS and NCWTS.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS): Tundra drivers Matt Crafton (second), Erik Jones (third), Johnny Sauter (fourth), Cameron Hayley (fifth), Timothy Peters (seventh) and Ben Kennedy (10th) currently rank in the top-10 in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) point standings…Erik Jones will make his first start at Bristol in the NCWTS on Wednesday evening, but the 19-year old driver has previously made two NXS starts at the half-mile track scoring one top-five result, two top-10s and a pole … Jones also made his NSCS ‘debut’ when he substitute drove for Denny Hamlin at Bristol in April … Jones took over the No. 11 Camry during a rain delay when Hamlin suffered from neck spasms in the April NSCS race.

ERIK JONES, No. 4 Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports

How do you contend with a proven champion like Matt Crafton?

“It’s not easy. At the beginning of the year, I thought we would have been on sheer speed good enough to beat him (Matt Crafton) on the track. Unfortunately, as the year has went on with mishaps and things not going our way, we’ve had the speed, but not really the finishes and he’s so consistent every week that those poor finishes or mistakes are amplified, especially in a points situation. I think the biggest thing for us now is kind of maximizing our bad days than our good days. We have really good stuff and we’re able to go out and run out front, but on those days when we aren’t any good, we have to go out and make sure we don’t make any mistakes and are in a place like Eldora – we did a really good job of being there and being consistent at the end of the race where we finished ahead of the 88 (Crafton). Any week we can finish ahead of him, that’s obviously a good point’s week for us. That’s the biggest thing, some weekends it’s not going to be there to win as much as we’d love to win, it’s just not going to play out and we need to make the best of those days it’s not going to play out.”

Michigan Recap:
Denny Hamlin finished fifth in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway, logging his fourth top-five result in the previous seven events in the 200-lap race won by Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth. Hamlin lined up fourth for the final restart with 13 laps remaining at the wide, two-mile track, and settled for fifth at the checkered flag behind Kenseth, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., and Austin Dillon. Hamlin started second in the #11 FedEx Freight Toyota and was among the top-10 throughout the majority of the 400-mile race. Varying fuel and pit strategies through the race’s midpoint shuffled the order as teams and drivers grew accustomed to a new aerodynamic rules package. The package, also featured at Indianapolis (where Hamlin also finished fifth) in July, had increased drag that affected the cars’ handling in the corners and made passing at a premium on Sunday. The finish moved Hamlin up one spot to ninth in the NASCAR standings following Michigan, 196 points behind leader Harvick with three regular season races remaining.

Bristol Preview: The Series heads to Bristol Motor Speedway for Saturday night’s 500-lap race at the high-banked, half-mile oval. Hamlin won the historic Bristol Night Race at the track in August 2012, when he passed Carl Edwards with 39 laps to go for the win. In 19 career Bristol starts, Hamlin has eight top-10 finishes and has led 524 laps. He also captured back-to-back Bristol poles in the summer 2013 and spring 2014. Earlier this year, Hamlin started fifth and was running in that spot before a rain shower delayed the race more than four hours. However, when the race returned, Hamlin was suffering from neck spasms and was replaced by Erik Jones, who guided the #11 FedEx Toyota to a 26th-place result.

Hamlin Conversation — BRISTOL:

How has the organization’s success helped the FedEx Racing Team build as the season heads towards the Chase?

“Obviously, the success of Joe Gibbs Racing as a whole over the past couple months really drives you as a competitor to want to be the best of the group. The guys at the shop have made really fast cars and TRD (Toyota Racing Development) have provided us with a lot of power. Our FedEx team has had some good finishes in that time, but we haven’t capitalized to put all the pieces together. I think it’s important for us to be peaking at the right time with the Chase coming up, and these next few tracks will give us a good idea of where we stack up. Bristol has been a good track for us over the years, and I’m confident we can go there this weekend and compete for another night race trophy there.”

Great Plains Along for the Ride at Bristol: The FedEx Ground Great Plains district will be recognized for outstanding service quality with its district code “GPLS” on the b-post of the #11 FedEx Ground Toyota this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Great Plains district, based out of the St. Paul hub, includes Minnesota, the Dakotas, and northern areas of Wisconsin and Iowa.
