Jimmie Johnson super at Fontana, passes Dale Earnhardt with 77th win

FONTANA, Calif. — Sometimes overlooked in the hoopla that has surrounded Jimmie Johnson’s Superman-like rise through NASCAR’s victory and championship totals is the fact that there are super men and women behind him.

The unusually vibrant victory lane ceremony that followed Johnson’s 77th Sprint Cup victory Sunday, pushing him past legendary Dale Earnhardt Sr. in Cup wins, included three of them.

Smiling in the background, wrapped in a Superman cape, was the man known as the Duke and Big Earl — Earl Barban, Johnson’s veteran spotter, Barban is the calm voice on Johnson’s radio, guiding him past accidents and helping him find passing lanes.

Barban gave Johnson the “clear” call when he moved past Kevin Harvick to take the lead for the final time, and the rest of the trip belonged to Johnson, who has proven he generally can handle himself quite well in such tense situations.
