Denny Hamlin wins his first points-paying restrictor- plate race at Talladega; pays 12/1 at the Las Vegas sports book. |
He got a big break and a little relief Sunday, winning the Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway when a caution flag flew on the final lap.
Hamlin took the white flag and was leading Greg Biffle when NASCAR threw a caution flag for Justin Allgaier's spin, ending the race under caution and handing Hamlin his 24th career victory and first this season. He became the eighth different winner in 10 races this year, earning a probable spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

“We really just want to win races, regardless of the implications for the Chase," said Hamlin, who won an exhibition race and a qualifying race at Daytona before finishing second in the season-opening Daytona 500. "It feels good to be in victory lane, especially in a points-paying event anyway."
Hamlin was leading when a caution flag flew for Carl Edwards' wreck with five laps remaining. He held the lead on a restart with two laps to go and took the white flag just after Allgiaer spun on the frontstretch. With a big piece of debris in the middle of the track, NASCAR threw another yellow flag, allowing Hamlin to take the checkered flag under caution.
Biffle, who led the most laps, finished second, followed by Clint Bowyer, Brian Vickers, AJ Allmendinger and Kevin Harvick.
